Hot Take on Taako & Lup's Surname
(Disclaimer: This idea is based on one of those early arc goofs. Also, if someone did this before I haven’t seen it, so no offense to any theoretical other person!)
In Ep. 7: Moonlighting (Part 1), Taako earns another piece of the “taco puzzle” and Griffin gives him sour cream, but also part of his backstory. When Taako was under the age of 12 (presumably adjusted to human years - Griffin says “the tender age of 65”) he lived on a farm with his grandpa, Tostaada.
Now, it’s very likely that this is Griffin’s interesting way to reveal an item and not Justin’s purposefully crafted storytelling, which makes it dubious canon for Taako’s backstory. But I’m treating it as canon for now.
Take a step back from TAZ with me. If you have two grandfathers each from a different side of your family, and you call both “Grandpa”, it can be confusing. A lot of people in my area (which is Tennessee - keep in mind, a nearby region to the McElroy’s native West Virginia with likely similar linguistic patterns) solve this problem by adding the grandparent's surname to the title “Grandpa”. So you might have “Grandpa Smith” and “Grandpa Johnson” and that’s just what you call those two elderly men and everyone’s cool with it.
So, going back to TAZ, this could mean that Tostaada might not be the grandfather’s first name, but his last. If Taako and Lup had two grandfathers (or more), this might have been a good way to differentiate which side of the family they were talking about. And if “Tostaada” is his last name, we have a possible candidate for Taako and Lup’s surname.
Keep in mind: we don’t know when the twins lived with their grandfather while they got passed around a lot, nor do we know that this guy was actually their biological grandfather (could have been a great uncle, married into the family later, or other relation). So I can’t say, “omg guys we found it!!!” with absolute certainty.
But this is at least an idea to entertain, and perhaps will fit your fandom needs. Personally, I like the way “Taako Tostaada” or “Lup Tostaada” sounds better than “Taako Taaco” or “Lup Taaco”, but maybe you don’t, and that’s okay! It’s just a fun idea that I use and I thought you all might want to share it with me.
In summary: Taako and Lup could have the surname “Tostaada” because of a grandfather called into existence by Griffin, assuming that he’s “Grandpa Tostaada” instead of “grandpa, Tostaada”, though the reliability of this canon (and perhaps this idea) is dubious.
