Planet's Fucked: What Can You Do To Help? (Long Post)
Since nobody is talking about the existential threat to the climate and the environment a second Trump term/Republican government control will cause, which to me supersedes literally every other issue, I wanted to just say my two cents, and some things you can do to help. I am a conservation biologist, whose field was hit substantially by the first Trump presidency. I study wild bees, birds, and plants.
In case anyone forgot what he did last time, he gagged scientists' ability to talk about climate change, he tried zeroing budgets for agencies like the NOAA, he attempted to gut protections in the Endangered Species Act (mainly by redefining 'take' in a way that would allow corporations to destroy habitat of imperiled species with no ramifications), he tried to do the same for the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (the law that offers official protection for native non-game birds), he sought to expand oil and coal extraction from federal protected lands, he shrunk the size of multiple national preserves, HE PULLED US OUT OF THE PARIS CLIMATE AGREEMENT, and more.
We are at a crucial tipping point in being able to slow the pace of climate change, where we decide what emissions scenario we will operate at, with existential consequences for both the environment and people. We are also in the middle of the Sixth Mass Extinction, with the rate of species extinctions far surpassing background rates due completely to human actions. What we do now will determine the fate of the environment for hundreds or thousands of years - from our ability to grow key food crops (goodbye corn belt! I hated you anyway but), to the pressure on coastal communities that will face the brunt of sea level rise and intensifying extreme weather events, to desertification, ocean acidification, wildfires, melting permafrost (yay, outbreaks of deadly frozen viruses!), and a breaking down of ecosystems and ecosystem services due to continued habitat loss and species declines, especially insect declines. The fact that the environment is clearly a low priority issue despite the very real existential threat to so many people, is beyond my ability to understand. I do partly blame the public education system for offering no mandatory environmental science curriculum or any at all in most places. What it means is that it will take the support of everyone who does care to make any amount of difference in this steeply uphill battle.
There are not enough environmental scientists to solve these issues, not if public support is not on our side and the majority of the general public is either uninformed or actively hostile towards climate science (or any conservation science).
So what can you, my fellow Americans, do to help mitigate and minimize the inevitable damage that lay ahead?
FINALLY SOMEONE TALKS ABOUT THIS
A 2nd trump presidency will basically be one of the last nails in our coffins, as the US, one of the biggest polluters, is going to be no longer have no qualms over fucking over the entire planet.
I get people's immediate priority isn't this, so they aren't talking about it, it's their rights and livelyhoods, it is totally understandable.
But talking to one of my professors today really showed me that the scientific community really is panicking and the planet is on its knees.
HOWEVER,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, we cannot lose hope, bc climate doomrism is as bad as climate denial
Take this time, while these issues are fresh on our minds, to educate yourself. Get involved. Share news with others. Call out misinformation. Do everything you can, while we still can.
i forget baby bugs don't really exist not in the way i want them too anywYs. i was like how come ive never seen a baby beetle i bet theyre soo cute and then i googled and i was like oh right. grub
grasshopper nymph.
Mantis nymph
Katydid nymph
Assassin bug nymph
That little mantis is so baby!
I sketched this real quick over the photo to execute this little idea I had.
the only insects that don't have your desired baby stage are the holometabolous insects, which are, like, most insects. so I guess you've got a point
who is going to do something about the violent crab epidemic worldwide
Ask not who is going to do something about the violent crab epidemic, but what can I do about the violent crab epidemic.
By the way, did you know that Insects are phylogenetically categorized as crustaceans? Something to think about...
feed himb greem jello
you will CHOKE and KILL him. he DOESN'T have ANY TEETH. HE can't chew it and he will die FROM ASPHYXIATION if you put it in his mouth.
wood ducks!!
yeah, I bet they would ducks.
Hey by the way, the ducks and geese have been evolving separately from other members of the fowl family (galliformes) since the mid to late cretaceous. The waterfowl lineage was already extremely diverse and successful BEFORE the mass extinction that killed off the non-avian dinosaurs. We even have fossils of fowls from the late cretaceous that display more-or-less the same body plan as modern geese.
next time you imagine what the world could've looked like during the time of the (non avian) dinosaurs, remember that these goofy looking ducks would've been there two.
More of the earless marsh rabbit since I can’t get enough of him! What a little fighter
the closest relatives of the primates are the Glires, the rodents and lagomorphs (including this guy). That means you are closer related to this silly little man than you are to any dog, cat, pig, aardvark, or sloth.
Why are you still reading this?
Hi! I'm not very familiar with the marine biology side of tumbler so I'm not to sure if you're the right person to ask, but do you know if jellyfish polyps can live past strobilation?
Tbh, I dont know alot about jellyfish in terms of biology and anatomy. I'm mostly more familiar with basic fish anatomy and deep ocean ecosystems. I also probably should've specified in my blog bio that I am not a certified marine biologist, I just research marine biology as a hobby.
Im sure that someone on marine biology tumblr can answer this question, which is why ill be posting it. Hopefully someone with more knowledge may be able to answer in the comments or reblogs.
I got this one! (Source: full time jellyfish aquarist). Yes I believe they do live past strobilation, we have full trays of moon polyps that have strobilated and are still alive. In my experience the only time a polyp may not make it is if we actually dislodge it from its substrate while trying to remove the ephyra.
Disclaimer: it may be more complicated than this, as it seems that strobilation can produce either ephyra or actually more polyps sometimes, but my point is that you can have a tray of polyps undergo strobilation and still have plenty of polyps afterwards, no matter how many strobilations occur
I hope this helps somewhat!
Dang! that is actually insane. If all the polyps in the world really wanted to, they could bloom entire ecosystems to death and still be more or less fine. Remind me to never get on the bad side of the polyps.
coelacanth my truest friend <3
More like coelacanth my truest cousin (:
get it cause they're lobe finned fish just like us (:
ge t it they're closer related to humans than they are to trout or sharks (:

i found lots of different Eumorpha fasciatus caterpillar color morphs today!
people asking if these are hornworms: they are! The term “hornworm” refers to Sphingidae caterpillars- there’s many many different types of them- tomato hornworms are just one species!
with these, you can see where the horn would come out even if it’s not present. but! i did find an early instar that still had the horn :D
I've been vegetarian for 10+ years, and I might lose it all if I ever get near one of these.
Is there a synonym to 'mothering' a child? As in, being the female egg donor?
'Fathering' can also be called 'siring' or 'begetting'.
There are a lot of terms for having given birth, or having been pregnant: 'carried', 'bore', 'gestated', 'bred', 'birthed', or species specific ones like 'pupped', 'foaled', 'whelped', etc.
There are gender-neutral terms like 'conceive' or 'create'.
It's quite possible there isn't one - being able to separate egg donation from carrying the fetus is a VERY recent thing.
Anyways, I fell down a rabbit-hole after thinking 'A sire can sire a child, but a dam REALLY shouldn't be damning them. What IS the correct term?'
*Maniacally joker grins NO, A dam really SHOULD be damning them. A Dams should really be damning them all to h-

another new Porcellio scaber morph for today: a still unnamed white-spotting gene that causes a sort of blended appearance, and which is spectacular when combined with sex-dependent red calico. accordingly, both pictured individuals are female and possibly mother and daughter
inheritance appears to be autosomal recessive. I’ve bred a small culture of these and believe them to be distinct from dalmatian, koi, piebald, and other already isolated genes, although I haven’t tested this by crossbreeding.
here’s a male of this morph + calico, equivalent to the females. although theoretically male calico don’t show reddish pigments, the white spotting gene seem to show some warm tones around the edges of the patches.
Erm, like I think your crustaceans might be a little dirty or rusty. they kinda look like you need to rinse them off or something
Dear tumbr
these girls a modles they look good from all angles
Dear tumbr
Not a lichen, but found this gorgeous cuckoo wasp (Chrysididae) dead in our office window well and threw it under the macroscope for a picture. Sadly the photograph doesn't capture the full extent of its iridescence! It is honestly one of the most stunning insects I have ever come across. Learning to look for and appreciate tiby living things never disappoints.
And they say minimalist food plating is out of style
Every now and then I mention something about the city of Brno to my american friends and it often causes much confusion/concern, so I wanna try to make a list summary of Everything Wrong With Brno
imma start
there is a place called Hell
there is a public transport stop called Crematorium, it is named after the nearby crematorium
it is oddly easy to take the wrong tram and accidentally end up at the Crematorium
the crematorium looks like this
add more
- there is a memorial plaque in the city to a woman who fell into the ground. In 1970 (I think) the lady was standing on a bus stop when a pipe burst, the ground opened up and the woman wasn't found for like 50 years because of the extensive ancient tunnels under the city
- all the tourist atractions are super creepy. 1) the ossuary. 2) the monk mummies under a church. 3) the city catacombs. 4) the medieval prison exposition at the castle. 5) the best city museum is probably Anthropos, the archeological museum. Full of bones.
- magic mushrooms grow wild all around the city
- there is a massive underground former strip club that got turned into a tea room. It's absolutely massive and cavernous. They didn't get rid of the pool tables and erotic art but they serve 50 types of green tea and desserts.
- the nudist lake in the old quarry
- Timo, the Banksy of Brno
- numbers 44 and 84, the circular route buses which arrive in random intervals and sometimes make you get out and then get back in. All of this makes sense to us locals.
- the smoking traffic signs and other random poles
- Kamenná kolonie: the village in the middle of a massive fuckn city
- One of the biggest prides of the Moravian Gallery is the Head of Medusa by Rubens. A very creepy painting which is plastered around the city and gave me nightmares in the kindergarten
- you can buy wine from the barrel in basically every shop
- there is a fishing shop with a maggot vending machine
Ja som asi slepá a žijem pod kameňom. Brno má katakomby??? Dopravné značenia o fajčení????? Ženská v tuneloch?????
och ne, ne značky o kouření
Brno is on the next level
all evidence for why we shouldn't talk about Brno
