HAPPY 36TH BIRTHDAY TAYLOR ALISON SWIFT December 13, 1989 | Reading, Pennsylvania
Taylor Swift not being able to pick her top 5 Taylor Swift songs is relatable to me as someone who also has like a hundred versions of this list in her head depending on mood, what I’m going through, time of day etc.
1 year ago today, Taylor Swift recorded ''Down Bad''
(on June 29, 2023)
taylor received her first nomination for induction into the songwriters hall of fame the same year she became eligible? makes sense, given all too well is the best song ever written. and blank space. and mine. and my tears ricochet. and dear john. and cold as you. and chloe or sam or sophia or marcus. and anti-hero. and cowboy like me. and treacherous. and-
SORRRRRRY the lore that Taylor listens to her last album in full before releasing a new album is CRAAAAZY to drop in the year 2025

Where do you see the god complex in her previous work?? I love this convo
ooh there’s so many good examples! 1989 has a ton. style is a big one (“we come back every time”), as is wildest dreams (“i bet these memories follow you around”) and this love (“you come back to what you need”). and then from the vault, we see it on slut (“you’re not saying you’re in love with me, but you’re going to”) and is it over now (“you dream of my mouth/you search in every model’s bed for something greater”).
i think it really starts rearing its head on 1989. on the original red album, we don’t get a ton of insight into the back-and-forth nature of her and jake. but this characteristic is what fueled the way she wrote about harry. jake kept coming back, so she KNEW that harry would too - and when he did, she felt like she had this unique quality that would make men who had been previously untamable want to settle down with her.
and the ultimate white whale was joe. based on how she wrote about his history, he was noncommittal to his previous girlfriends, but she was the one who changed that (ready for it, delicate, need, all of the girls you loved before, daylight, etc). and even in the end, they kept coming back to each other, and she knew she could make him come back to her (imgonnagetyouback).
enter, matty. he comes in saying everything that reaffirms her belief in her skills - he tells her that he’s pined for her since their brief hookup in 2014, that he’s ready to settle down and give her what joe refuses to. this lays the groundwork for her escape because she thinks she’s done it - there’s no more work to be done with matty, because he’s somehow come back to her already reformed. so she can switch out the male lead of her life with a simple maneuver, and have the exact same ending.
only to realize…it was nothing more than a scam to conquer her. she had never reformed matty. and to that end, she never reformed the previous men either. they came back to her because they loved her. not because she had a certain skill set. and this is the other part that hits her on ttpd - there’s no game or master trick or ace card she can play. whether or not a man comes back to her is purely dependent on whether they ever really loved her to begin with. and this realization is more terrifying, because it removes her (misguided) sense of control.
so sad how anti-hero asks “are you going to leave me because i scheme too much - because i am too much?” but then midnights’ two closers give you two answers: no (mastermind) and yes (dear reader). & the fact that it’s really up for us to choose makes it even sadder, like none of this is REAL. it’s all in her head. she’s up past midnight, creating and answering her own questions. and at midnight, she says no! they know i mastermind things and they love it about me! but three hours later, when she’s still up processing, she says yes! i have done too much and gone too far! i go home to an empty house! and it’s fucking sad, because it’s all in her imagination, the question and the answers. so we get to pick where the conversation goes, how the album concludes. we pick and we hope we’re right or wrong. it is both a privilege and a nightmare.
“As a fan, I gravitate toward artists who can be funny and heartbroken at the same time, witty and then extremely sincere, tough and exposed. It’s her ability to dance between juxtaposed feelings that really thrills me to listen to. I love that she takes big swings.”
— Taylor to British Vogue on Raye (x)
Don’t mind me I’m just thinking about how we’ve grown up with Taylor and watched her go from writing songs about true love to experiencing It
taylor is really showing the world that you can leave a situation that isn’t serving you anymore and it’ll be really scary and hard, but there’s something so much better waiting on the other side of that. i’m just so glad that women are getting to see her as an example idk
this is what taylor has openly always wanted and she finally found someone who wholeheartedly wants to be with her… i am in (happy) tears for her!
I don’t like that falling feels like flying ’til the bone crush.
