belated holiday countdown five [powered by patreon]
AND FINALLY weve reached the end of this , there were only 5 ideas overall so it didnt run for the full 7 but literally Everyone wanted candlenights shenanigansÂ
and tbh im glad i ran long a bit ?? because none of the candlenights requests were specific and then i could draw some of the tacoma liveshow nonsense ??? this was just genius and griffin is still a total gremlin jfdkjsgjfkdfj
plus a bonus holiday garyl :L
[image description: two drawings. The first shows Magnus, Merle and Taako, standing next to each other in a snowstorm. Magnus is a tall, broad, dark-complexioned man with short, wavy brown hair and a short beard thatâs longest on the sides. Taako is a skinny elf with brown skin and long, curly white hair thatâs dark at the roots and in a long braid down his back. Theyâre both dressed as Christmas elves. Magnus is holding an ax and looking to the side uncertainly. Taako is wearing a blue wizard hat and holding a golden glaive, staring straight ahead and touching his chin, thinking hard. Merle is standing slightly in front of them. Heâs a stocky dwarf with an olive complexion and thick white beard. Heâs dressed as Santa, holding a sack in front of him. One of his arms is made of wood and he has an eye patch and glasses. The second drawing is of Garyl, a white binicorn with a brown face, back, haunches and front legs. He has two pink horns coming out of his forehead and his feet are planted firmly on the ground as he says, âItâs chill my dudes.â]
Resources For Writing Deaf, Mute, or Blind Characters
Despite the fact that I am not deaf, mute, or blind myself, one of the most common questions I receive is how to portray characters with these disabilities in fiction.
As such, Iâve compiled the resources Iâve accumulated (from real life deaf, mute, or blind people) into a handy masterlist.
Deaf Characters:
Deaf characters masterpost
Deaf dialogue thread
Dialogue with signing characters (also applies to mute characters.)

Updated with more resources, specifically for characters who are blind in one eye.
Oh damn, i need this
âlol the only people mad about the tumblr announcement just want porn lolâ
Yeah, no.
Tumblr blocked the tag âchronic painâ in this mess for no reason
Theyâre flagging commonly used tags by queer people, sex educators, and artists who make their fucking LIVING on tumblr
Theyâre gonna take down genuine sex workers because they didnât curb the problem with spamming porn bots YEARS ago when tumblr users REPORTED OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND *OVER* that it was a problem
Tumblr IGNORED the bots, IGNORED the problems, and honestly treated it like NOTHING until their app was taken off a store due to it.
Theyâre fucking over a shit-ton of REAL PEOPLE who rely on tumblr for community and/or income because they ignored usersâ complaints about shitty porn bots for YEARS until it had financial consequences
I can no longer even talk about chronic pain without the post being blocked from searches
I have drawn one or two nude pieces on my art tumblr which is 99% safe for work but now Iâm worried the blog will be taken down entirely because Tumblr wonât bother differentiating between spam and REAL PEOPLE just trying to live their goddamn lives
And god forbid I want to talk about bisexuality or sex or kink in just⌠MY LIFE. As a normal-ass human being who just wants to TALK ABOUT HUMAN THINGS
No, their solution to nuke a problem theyâve ignored for years is to take us all down at once
So maybe donât laugh about âoh no not my pornzâ because 1. plenty of that ~porn~ is made by actual humans making their living and 2. WAY MORE than âjust pornâ is being targeted
This along with Facebook continuously upholding white supremacy by letting nazi shit fly by while they ban people for speaking out against their oppressors and itâs basically like weâre running out of truly free places to just⌠BE
its only been out for 2 hours but im pretty confident on how im gonna spend the next 3 to 60 hours so leave me alone
Day One: Not enough energy
@officialbakukamiweek
If there ever was a moment that proved how important the AO3 is, tonight was that very moment.Â
"Same-sex romantic content will be far more likely to be remove" meaning the art of Steven Universe of the gems and content in general will it be removed and content from the new She-ra, which both shows does have lbgt and queer themes in them?
this wonât be official policy or anything but it will probably be the aggregate effect, yes.
why does this happen, you ask?
because the site rules are enforced by humans, and humans ⌠are not very good at being 100% fair or unbiased. (at least, not when weâre acting in large numbers. any one person could be good at it, but the likelihood that most of a group is good at fairness drops as the group gets bigger.)
thus, Even when weâre trying to be unbiased:
material thatâs potentially in violation of the tumblr TOS featuring subjects that are not âdefaultâ (NOT straight, cis, perisex, white, able-bodied, healthy, etc) have a greater chance of being noticed and reported. itâs more âvisibleâ because of a combined effect of âthis might be a violationâ and the brainâs increased awareness when something is 'out of the ordinaryâ. if straight-cis-white is 'ordinaryâ: things that arenât straight-cis-white grab our attention, and are that much more likely to be scrutinized for violations of the TOS. (see: fandomâs tendency to go after media that isnât mediocre whitebread content for failing to be 'good enoughâ.)
this is severely compounded by:
a lack of internal awareness of privilege/bias/etc amongst those who hold the majority opinion. (itâs the majority opinion because the majority holds that opinion.) if the majority is biased against something, that thing is more likely to get reported as a problem by people who donât even acknowledge that theyâre biased against it.
not to mention:
people who will participate in deliberately biased & malicious reporting. thereâs plenty of people who are openly racist, openly homophobes, openly transphobes, etc. you think they wonât take special time to go after TOS violations from content that they openly loathe? because they do - and they will continue to do so.
why this happens in America/on American platforms in particular:
at the admin level: in America, the higher up the management ladder you go, the more likely the people making the decisions are straight white cis guys who do not have a strong awareness of their own privilege and/or bias against people who donât share their privilege. Â These are the people who will be responsible for writing & enforcing the rules for nsfw content at Oath and/or Tumblr. they are likely to be unconsciously biased towards content that they personally like and against content they personally donât like, so in aggregate, their decisions will be more likely to favor straight white cis guy tastes & enjoyments.
at the cultural level: America is obsessive about keeping sexual content from 'the childrenâ than violent content, because our cultural values are very much rooted in puritanial Christian morality. We also still have a lot of racism, homophobia, queerphobia, transphobia, sexism, etc. baked directly into our culture. so if something can be concievably argued as a threat to preserving the innocence/sexual ignorance of a puritanical, white Christian kid, then it has much higher potential to be flagged as n sfw. (of course, this means LGBTQ+ content (romantic or otherwise) and non-white content is more likely to be tagged as in violation of the TOS.)
tl;dr: even if every single person moderating tumblr was acting with the best intentions, trying to be 100% fair and reporting/acting without bias, the drift will be towards creating a sexually chaste, LGBTQ+-unfriendly, white-centric, and cis-bodied/perisex only space as everything else gets reported more often as a problem and purged off the site.
thatâs why censorship enforces baked-in privilege in brief, folx.
Sorry to bother you, but, this post has been incorrectly flagged as explicit content by tumblr. Iâm reblogging it here in hopes that you (the OP) will see this note and file an appeal. I would file an appeal myself, but apparently ONLY the OP can.
Wow, look at that!
No images to be misinterpreted by a bot
Nothing sexually explicit at all - not even mentions of sexually explicit content.
One mention of n sfw (even censored as here)
But I did mention lgbtq+ content đ¤
And talk about how Tumblrâs new policy will absolutely be enforced in racist and queerphobic ways
Wild
Its irritating that people are acting like people are being annoyed theyâll no longer be able to jack off on this site and not that this site is notorious for implementing new features in inventive and appalling ways; their last âfixâ less than a month ago resulted in 1000s of users having their accounts taken away despite having done nothing
Fucking this. Thatâs my primary irritation in all of this. Like yes there most definitely are people upset about no porn, but out of all the posts Iâve seen, Iâve seen the most asinine things being flagged. This is already going to be a disaster.
Also, small note. Iâm not saying tumblr isnât allowed to do this, in fact I think most understand this is their website and they can do what theyâre doing, but that doesnât mean I think itâs a good idea or that they should. I still passionately hate what they are doing.
This is literally the only website I have ever had any fraction of success with my art.
Where That Candy Thong At?
Itâs here! So, update: all pre-orders have shipped and the PDFs have gone out. To top that delicious cake youâre surely nomming at, we have some good news! We raised a total of $388.60 for charity!
Thatâs not all. We have 24 physical copies left on our shelves and while the Final Boss loves all of it, we would like to share it with yâall. Please reblog this post for a chance at winning one of these spare copies (plus shipping) on us, and!âone of the twenty-four spare copy buyers will receive the last Azreto Body Pillowcase at no extra charge. ;)
Small-Text Notes: profit made from the extras will become a second donation to the same charity. Both U.S. and International peeps who reblog / make a purchase have a shot at winning the spare copy and body pillow.
A big special thank you for making this charity nsfw zine a success! You can visit our store here.
Taako and Lup also buy those âbest friendsâ heart necklaces but they have to buy two pairs because they canât decide who gets the one with âbestâ on it so itâs like
Magnus wears both of the âfriendsâ necklaces when they do this, and it it makes him incredibly happy.
hey OP and @dungeonsanddontfuckup thank you for my life

đJester and Sprinkle đ
this weekend, the Tumblr iOS app disappeared from the Apple store. Today, NSFW/adult content blogs are disappearing en masse.
Tumblrâs official word is theyâre having âa problemâ with the app that theyâre working to clean up, but thereâs a non-zero chance the two things are related. Apple kicks apps that donât meet their cleanliness standards out of the store without warning sometimes. (I suspect that blogs properly tagged nsfw are being purged while non-tagged nsfw blogs remain untouched. hence: the pornbots are here to stay. probably.)
if your blog is nsfw, or you have any nsfw sideblogs, probably time to back them up & brace.
If your account(s) have been nuked, submit a ticket, inundate them because of their fuck-up.

definitely report your blog being deleted to tumblr.
some people are saying this is not a deliberate purge.

hey ao3 can you like give the extra $38k you made from this monthâs funds drive to charity
You know it legally is a charity, right?
If x charity aims for ÂŁ10, but gets ÂŁ15, would you expect then to give back the extra five or give it then to another charity? No. Any extra costs go into the ârainy dayâ fund; sometimes servers crash or break, sometimes false reports are made that require the legal team, sometimes you need to hire coders or what not to implement new features or fix bugs or deal with broken code âŚÂ
The money they aimed for is the bare minimum, which goes towards things like basic server costs and domain names and legal advice and so forth, but they donât just âpocketâ the rest (as people claim). Itâs not a business. It has no advertisements. It needs some ârainy dayâ cash to function.Â
You canât ask a charity to give money to another charity.Â
It needs what it gets to function and improve.Â
kiena-tesedale replied to this post
They donât âpocketâ excess money. They have a publicly accessible budget - waaaay more info than most charities, in fact. In it, you can clearly see where each dollar goes. (Also, you are vastly underestimating either how much traffic AO3 gets or how much servers/hosting costs.) Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
In my experience, people who donât work in web design and hosting just have no concept of how heavy a load something like AO3 would have. Not only is the traffic absolutely buck wild, but the quantity of data that archive needs to store is fuckoff crazy. Iâm talking âmore than the library of congressâ crazy. The only reason it doesnât require Netflix levels of data serving is that itâs text based rather than video.
AO3 is in the top 300 websites in the world, and the top 100 in the US. It is the number 2 literature website.
Number 2 in the entire world. JSTOR is 20.
It sees about 6 million people a day. About 250k an hour. Each of those people is loading multiple pages, many are running searches that execute on literally hundreds of potential variables per search. The demands involved are astronomical.
JSTOR, btw, makes 85 million dollars a year.
Itâs 18 ranks below AO3â˛s traffic, and takes in 650 times the amount of money.
But letâs say you think thatâs an unfair comparison. Would you say that the Project Gutenberg Literature Archival Group- another text based archive that handles literature operating outside traditional copyright requirements- is more similar?
Because it sees all of 4% of the traffic that AO3 handles.
Care to guess its budget?
Double that of AO3.
AO3 is doing shit on the kind of shoestring budget that I fully, 100% cannot comprehend. And thatâs just the archival service.
The 130k also pays for the OTWâs legal team, which they use to defend the right of fandom to fucking exist.
Itâs absolutely batshit fucked up that people are fighting to have the OTW defunded and AO3 shut down. They are the only organized group that actually stands directly between fandom- all the art and the fics and the vids and the music and the chats and the memes and everything we love about interactive, transformative work- and an incalculable amount of lawsuits.
YES! ^^^THIS.
âIn my experience, people who donât work in web design and hosting just have no concept of how heavy a load something like AO3 would have. Not only is the traffic absolutely buck wild, but the quantity of data that archive needs to store is fuckoff crazy. Iâm talking âmore than the library of congressâ crazy. The only reason it doesnât require Netflix levels of data serving is that itâs text based rather than video.â
I co-founded a startup a few years ago (rhinobird.tv) that was for creating a collaborative video platform (live video streaming + multi-device HTML5 video conversion + P2P networking + AWS hosting among other things) and our yearly costs during initial development were right up there (just with our tiny team and handful of useability testers). We didnât even have users at that point.
Hosting is expensive. Design and development are expensive. Adding a new, or expanding an existing features is expensive.
Like AO3â˛s tagging?
That seems simple, but itâs not. Each time that feature is tweaked or expanded, it requires changes to the database, which could involve completely restructuring it, or moving to a different kind of database architecture. It involves changes to the search engine because there are different kinds of search methodologies that interact differently with different kinds of databases, and languages used.
Meanwhile, the technology and methodologies behind systems architecture, hosting, databases, and search are constantly evolving.
Which means that if your whole Thing is about providing:Â
Hosting that can withstand hundreds of thousands of requests per hour;
A database that can work with unstructured and semi-structured and highly-structured data which may have one-to-one relationships with other data, or may be non-relational and multi-dimensional.
A database that can handle the importation of data from other databases (e.g. FF.net, Tumblr, etc) whose schema, controlled vocabularies, taxonomy, and metadata can widely differ.
A database and backend that can normalize all of that data coming in (so you know, the Thing actually works).
A robust search that has to be intelligent enough to include and exclude across a variety of boolean or natural language options and understand the difference between tags and content (and presumably other categories within the taxonomy).
AND DO ALL OF THIS QUICKLY.
Then youâll need people who must continuously improve their skills and knowledge to implement these evolving technologies and methodologies or else the thing youâve built will die on the vine.
That is neither cheap nor easy.
Not even getting into the costs of maintenance and security. Or the front end development whose features can be broken by browser updates. Like that Rich Text Editor? Try supporting that feature cross-platform, browser and device agnostic.
If people want to question the cost of Things On The Internet, then direct thy gaze at JSTOR which profits from paywalls to research that is not always privately funded (e.g. public university funded studies). But again, JSTOR provides a service, and that service is not cheap to expand and maintain.
But really, itâs not about costs and never was. Bitching about costs is a straw-man. Itâs a cover for authoritarian censorship. It was the same old bullshit even before the LJ strike-through, and itâs the same bullshit now.
hereâs a handy checklist for anyone considering redeeming a villain!!!
are theyâŚ
â a wife beater? â sexually abusive? â violent towards small children? â extremely racist? â a goddamn fascist?
if you checked any of these boxes, not only should you not redeem that villain, but Iâm also going to come to your house and pour sewer water into your sock drawer for even considering it
@littleblackdragonbayard seemed relevant to a certain half-assed redemption arc we both hate
this is really stupid. fiction isnât a real life scenario, itâs an environment where we can do what we canât irl. That includes hoping for evil people to do better, and believing they can. it can be HEALING to be an abused kid and watch abusers similar to your own recognise their wrongs and WORK to change. just because itâs not for you doesnât mean someone else canât enjoy it or find solace in the redemption of a proxy when the real abuser they love will never do the same. not to mention that abusers can and do see redemption arcs as a reason that it is WORTHWHILE to try and change. which is yknow, a good thing.
a lot of people in the notes are talking about endeavour. I hate that bitch too. every single part of him doing better makes me anxious because I donât believe heâs changed. however, his arc and family dynamic currently is being played very well, and heâs not just suddenly perfect and loved. heâs WORKING for it and itâs not an all at once deal. thatâs how such a thing should be.
I know itâs stressful when an abuser actually tries to change (though are you really going to argue that even in reality they shouldnt try to?). but fictional redemptions arenât about actuality theyâre about wish fulfilment. you may hate redemption arcs but you donât get to level moral superiority or righteousness over people that want or need the kind of fantasy that they fulfill. just donât consume the media instead of trying to police what other people write.
Spreading this anti-redemption narrative is dangerous. There are actually reformed abusers in real life. Does this erase or excuse what theyâve done in the past? No. Does this mean their victims have to interact with them? No. But they can change, and some of them are trying to do good. We need to encourage that. We gain nothing by telling abusers to keep abusing.
ik i got kiss reqs goin and all, but today is one of my best friendsâ birthday!Â
