A Lingering Darkness
An Undertale drabble. Cross-posted on AO3.
There are some days that are worse than others. The darkness more prevalent and lingering. The dark thoughts that you would rather not actually follow through on. You see blood on your hands despite knowing that there isn't any, that if you were being literal, there never has been. But it was all semantics.
Like now, there were times where your face was carefully blank, but your eyes were hard and you wondered just how hard it would be to take that spear of hers and run it through her head. Just to get her to shut up. You were kind of surprised by how it was her more that the loud mouthed skeleton that graded the most on your nerves. Not that you didn't imagine strangling him with his own scarf from time to time.
Honestly, it was kind of a good thing that you found him more endearing than annoying. If there was one thing you had learned it was that Mister Judgement and Justice over there wouldn't raise a hand to harm you, unless you harmed his precious brother.
That didn't mean you could hurt her though, the Scientist would probably be pissed that you hurt her beau but really you didn't understand what was so appealing about the guard. She was too Loud and it was pissing you off.
You imagined creating a spear out of the little magic you had, or maybe a series of arrows, and turning her into a pin cushion. Maybe making rope and hanging her. The resulting silence would be deafening in its shock and horror. You wanted it.
"cool it, kid." It's the hand on your shoulder more than the quiet but calm words that shock you out of your trance but the warning in the tone was clear. You felt the magic you hadn't even realized you were accumulating disperse. Your eyes had likely turned red with power and you glanced around the room. No one else had noticed, apparently.
You couldn't lose control, you were gunning for the perfect happy ending here. You couldn't lose yourself to the thoughts, if you acted on them that would be a foothold into them gaining control. This was your life and they would stay out of it.
"I'll be outside." You shrug off his hand and make your way towards the door, ignoring the worried voices calling after you, your abrupt action of passing everyone to make it to the door drawing attention.
You didn't deserve their concern.
i know the missing antichrist was kind of a big deal but can we talk about the second coming of christ that was sitting right under our noses all this time?
you know, jesus christ? yeshua the annointed? joshua, smeared with oil? i’ll bet you $20 greasy johnson’s mother calls him josh
Select additional comments:
@whispsofwind reply:
Greasy Johnson collects tropical fish, Jesus’ symbol in early Christianity (Ictus, meaning Fish, is the acronym)
Johnson, aka Son of John, aka Son of the Grace of God/ of the Gracius God
Greasy, Adam’s equivalent in the gang war of Tadfield
I can’t believe it never crossed my mind oh my GOD
i am absolutely losing my mind over this.
it’s strongly suggested that greasy johnson is the dowling’s natural child, so then the plan to replace him with adam suddenly has a deeper meaning that just “an american diplomat” – and who knows what information was accessible to the ones who made the call?
and suddently, that whole bit about “you don’t want to know what could have happened to baby B. we like your version better, anyway” doesn’t have to necessarily mean the nuns would have murdered the baby; it could just as well have meant that that kid was gonna go through his own share of trials and such.
that said, it’s hardly likely that “johnson” isn’t the kid’s last name, but hey maybe his first name is chris or something.
(and that’s how my sudden headcanon as i read this post that sister mary was the one to adopt baby B came and went out the window in 5 minutes – you know, sister mary loquacious, (re)turned to mary hodges, whom the book pretty much states never had intercourse (the whole bit about magazines) so she’s essentially a virgin mary; but, again, johnson is more than likely to be a last name, so hodges-johnson is out of the question)
still!! you guys might definitely be onto something. because neil gaiman has mentioned a couple times now that the GO sequel would have dealt with the 2nd coming of Christ, right. in america. and the last we hear of the other two kids in the book, warlock was flying back to america and greasy johnson had discovered american football which “was about to change his life”.
not just that, but:
[ID: book passage, “after all, you never forget the first friends you ever had, even if you were all a few hours old at the time”]
i am HERE for the potential sequel about the friendship between adam, johnson, and warlock – the antichrist, the saviour, and some random normal kid – cause if that wouldn’t be peak GO i don’t know what would.
(side note – there are so many incredible word plays in the naming of GO characters, such as:
agnes nutter, which translates quite literally to “the crazy saint”
anathema device, which is a tongue-in-cheek reference to deus ex machina since it’s less “god [coming down to save the day] from the machine” and more “damnation […] from the machine”, which. hey.
pulsifer, which again literally translates to “carrying a beating”, and, y’know, there’s loads of ways to interpret that
and as an etymology enthusiast, right now i am SO VERY pissed at myself that i never once thought about greasy johnson’s name in 10 years of picking this book apart ajsfgajfgakgkegb )
These additions are GOLD
I’ll be honest, at the beginning I thought it as a crack theory precisely because of what Mr Gaiman said about the sequel: Jesus was going to come down and everyone was going to get super excited, angel bodyguards everywhere etc, and then it would be revealed Jesus only wanted to pay a visit.
But, imagine it, everyone is waiting, a magical silver plane lands, angels going apoplectic because HE’S COMING SHUT UP HERE HE IS
And then, the plane is empty.
Greasy Johnson appears behind the welcoming party with a dirty football t-shirt on, and apologises because he didn’t mean to be so late and isn’t the weather nice today?
I am so ANGRY that I am actually starting to take all of this seriously. You have NO IDEA how absolutely furious I am about this theory making sense.
I thought I heard somewhere that the proposed title for the sequel was “668: The Neighbor of the Beast,” which…if Adam is “the Beast,”
But why would Hodges-Johnson be out of the question? The show says nothing about Mary’s personal life, and the bit in the book implies that she was a virgin when she started her business, but possibly wouldn’t always want to be one. She made “a mental note to have [an orgasm] if the occasion ever presented itself…”
Maybe she married Joseph/Josephine Johnson, and like her predecessor’s, her spouse adopted and raised the kid as his/her own.
And there’s this from the book:
Mary Hodges hesitated. When she did speak, it was as though memories that had been scabbed over were disturbed for the first time in years.
Could in fact be that she never thought of her life as a Satanic nun (how I’ve always read it).
But it could also be that she’s trying to hide something, even from her occult and ethereal interrogators…
Wonder what was in her lovely dream about the thing she liked best?
Okay but this theory is awesome and amazing
@deadcatwithaflamethrower @thebibliosphere
Neil is all about the fanfic. PLEASE someone dig the speculation and write Neighbor of the Beast. PLEASEEEEEEEEEE.
types of writing sessions
got on computer, looked at document, was like “fuck this shit” and got off
wrote like 150 words that consist of bloating the existing useless conversation or scene even more
wrote SO MANY WORDS but it was because you were so desperate to escape the Bad Part
wrote SO MANY WORDS but it was because you were so desperate to get closer to the Good Part
got on your document, ran into research issue, spent like an hour on Wikipedia, ah shit
the somewhat satisfying “fixing everything I hated about the scene I wrote the day before” session
decent amount of progress that took like 3x longer than it should have because you were repeatedly distracted
In The Zone and completely absorbed, just BLAZING through a few thousand words, probably close to the ending, probably listening to playlist
Not actually a writing session, just listening to playlist
the session where you write like a paragraph, suddenly realize the unfixability of your current plot predicament, and cry
that weird session where you don’t have much time and you’re super tired and you write like a page but you reread it the next morning and holy shit these words came from the fingers of god why is it so good
that session that is purely just navigating the boring shit of getting from one scene to the next and it sucks but you leave off on the cusp of something interesting and it feels good
the satisfyingly exhausting session where you write the Good Part and you’re confident it came out pretty well and you’re full of thoughts and stuff about where things are going next but you need to let them rest
get on computer, write exactly one sentence, get off computer. Now you can say you wrote today

I feel like there are probably too many people just scrolling past this so let’s go through everything that’s going on here.
1. With Roger’s voice actor standing off camera, Bob Hoskins acts into empty air and frantically sawing at his handcuff, continually looking up and down at different visual marks of various depths. Look at the slow pan up of his eyes in gif 4, and then the quick shift to his side. Think about how, on set, he was looking at nothing.
2. Starting in gif 2, The box must be made to stop shaking, either by concealed crew member, mechanism, or Hoskins own dextrousness, as he is doing all of the things mentioned in point 1.
3. In all gifs, Roger’s handcuff has to be made to move appropriately through a hidden mechanism. (If you watch the 4th gif closely you can see the split second where it is replaced by an animated facsimile of the actual handcuff, but just for barely a second.)
4. The crew voluntarily (we know this because it is now a common internal phrase at Disney for putting in extra work for small but significant reward) decided to make Roger bump the lamp and give the entire scene a constantly moving light source that had to be matched between the on set footage and Roger. This was for two reasons, A) Robert Zemeckis thought it would be funnier, and B) one of the key techniques the crew employed to make the audience instinctually accept that Toons coexisted with the live action environment was constant interaction with it. This is why, other than comedy, Roger is so dang clumsy. Instead of isolating Toons from real objects to make it easier for themselves, the production went out of its way to make Toons interact more with the live action set than even real actors necessarily would, in order to subtly, constantly remind the audience that they have real palpable presence. You can watch the whole scene here, just to see how few shots there are of Roger where he doesn’t interact with a real object.
The crew and animators did all of this with hand drawn cell animation without computerized special effects. 1988, we were still five years out from Jurassic Park, the first movie to make the leap from fully physical creature effects to seamlessly integrating realistic computer generated images with live action footage. Roger’s shadows weren’t done with CGI. Hoskin’s sightlines were not digitally altered. Wires controlling the handcuff were not removed in post.
Who fucking Framed Roger fucking Rabbit, folks. The greatest trick is when people don’t realize you’re tricking them at all.
Let’s also not forget that writing. “Only when it was funny” isn’t just hilarious, it’s great comedy theory. It lampshades the joke, but also serves to remind the viewer that Toons have a separate set of physical laws they adhere to, mostly revolving around comedic value. Roger cannot remove his hand from the cuffs… until it’d get a laugh from an audience.
Everything about this movie, EVERYTHING about it, is so finely crafted. I could wax lyrical about it for days.
Was always one of my favorites
Jack Harkness, at your service. Me and the Doc we go way back.
Graham and Jack both said trans rights
okay but seriously Graham’s heard the Doctor talk about having been male in the past and he may not understand the circumstances but he hears Jack use “he” and immediately goes excuse you nobody misgenders my friends on my fucking watch
and Jack, who’s canonically been pregnant at least twice (although possibly only once at this point in his timeline), immediately goes HECK YEAH THE DOC TRANSITIONED GOOD FOR THEM IS SHE HOT NVM I KNOW SHE IS
@rowanthestrange hiding his cute mini-fic in the tags again
That’s so cute omg I can’t <3
baker: ‘they’re for babies.’
jack: ‘but babies can’t eat cake’
The Doctor: ‘So I’m a woman now’
Jack: ‘I know! I got you a cake!’
The Doctor: ‘You always have the appropriate response for every occasion, Jack.’
Jack: ‘Can I get that in writing?’
The Doctor: *through a mouth full of cake* ‘no.’
good fic is Good Fic
BUT BABIES CAN’T EAT CAKE i’m dying in the best way
i enjoy that every single human’s reaction to penguin is unrestrained delight
And penguins lack large terrestrial predators, so their reaction to humans tends to be, “HELLO STRANGE GIANT PENGUINS, WHAT ARE YOU DOING? DO YOU HAVE ANY FISH?”
I will reblog this on my deathbed.
Please let him science 🐧
This is the purest post on this dumpster fire of a website
When you're depressed and lonely, but have no motivation to do anything at all.
I hate this.
When you know you have some leeway because depression and anxiety mess with people, but still worry about being too ooc.
That I'm writing a self destructive spiral before getting to the fluff is not helping. Erk.
I’ve read the cutest fic ever by @toedenandbackagain and decided to draw a comic based on it! Please, read it: https://archiveofourown.org/works/19840567
So would anyone be interested in self indulgent fluffy fics of depressed Shadow plus Rouge. I ask because I have like 3 started, one finished and 2 of those posted on ao3. And I kind of want to chat/get feedback. Maybe. Sort of.
Feel free to ignore this.
Pros and Cons of being a Rare Pair Shipper
Cons:
chances are, just about five people actively ship it in your fandom
there’s hardly any fanart, fics, or edits of your ship
if you want something done, you have to do it yourself
you literally just signed yourself up for like ten, with about half of that ten actually being good, fics in their ao3 tag
constantly being asked why you ship them when [insert reason as to why it apparently makes sense to NOT ship them]
Pros:
when ship drama happens in your fandom, at least your ship is safe from it
usually the people that actively ship the rare pair are nice
literally nothing else
do Rouge and Shadow ever have self care nights? Like doing face masks and painting nails? I feel like that's something they'd enjoy doing a lot
yes and they invite omega too
theyre watching legally blonde
This is probably a difficult question to answer but, what has been your favorite moments or best interactions in IDW so far? It's kind of hard for me to choose as well, but I do adore the entire exchange between Sonic and Shadow in #6. Though the brief comforting scene he has with Tails in #1 and the "I never fear the fall" line from #7 were great too.
^ This alone in #1 displays a much more genuine grasp of Tails than what Forces had in it’s entire narrative.
^ Sonic is motivated by his stomach XD
^ Believable and good portrayal of Amy’s organizational skills cultivated in the heat of war.
^ Also great for showing that Amy accepts Sonic for who he is.
^ Wow. It’s like he’s channeling he’s SatBK portrayal. Which is a GOOD thing.
^ Sonic ribbing Knuckles is always funny.
^ Comical if for no other reason than it’s funny that Sonic can even get dizzy. Though the circling Flickies, rings and emeralds makes it even funnier.
^ Sonic’s refusing to shake Dr Eggman’s hand is even more understandable (Aside from him not liking the fat dictator at all) given the captivity and (Alleged) torture he suffered.
^ Interesting insight into Shadow via his acknowledgment of how dangerous he was whilst amnesia-stricken.
^ Sonic using morally grey tactics to convince Shadow shows that he’s not the perfect good guy type.
^ I really like it that Sonic is depicted as smart enough to deduce that this Dr Eggman is not the real deal.
^ As well as knowing when to fold ‘em. Maybe he learned after Infinite beat seven shades out of him?
^ AWESOME set of panels with a cool little reference to the lyrics of one of Sonic’s themes.
^ Good way of showing Sonic’s ability to read people.
^ Loved the bit in which Silver uses Sonic as a living projectile. It combines both character’s abilities really well and is something you’d expect to see in the games.
^ GAH SHE’S TOO CUTE.
^ Consider me a fan of Amy-Knuckles supportive friendship.
