During this week's sorting of the museum's bird collection, I found a Passenger Pigeon. Its probably the museum's only taxidermy of an extinct species.
These pigeons used to flock in the millions, but hunting, poisoning & habitat loss completely wiped them out.

Something I've been working on for a few days; a dinosaur phylogeny poster!
This is something I hope to get printed large size & take to outreach events & engagements, though I may revise the layout & arrangement based on any feedback I get.
Believe it or not, even this is a hugely simplified illustration of the evolutionary history of Dinosaurs. Certain groups have been compressed or paired-down for the sake of brevity, but the overall picture is authentic to the most recent research & analyses. It means to demonstrate the incredible (known) diversity within this most fascinating & exciting of dynasties.

You may have seen the story going round about the alleged 'man in a bear costume' at a zoo in China, & people seem split 50/50 about whether they believe it. Let me assure you, this is 100% real.
This is a Sun Bear (Helarctos malayanus). Sun Bears are the smallest Iiving bear species at up to 65 kg & are native to South East Asia. They're also the most arboreal bear, spending time in trees eating fruit & insects, which is at least part of the reason they're so strangely proportioned & flexible. In a case of convergent evolution, its a bear trying to be an ape, hence the oddly human legs.
Very strange looking indeed, but absolutely a real animal ☀️🐻🌏
New dino animation; The Mimic!
This one was inspired by a passage from Dr David Hone's book The Future Of Dinosaurs, where he mentions the possibility of Batesian Mimicry. This is the act of an animal assuming the appearance of a more dangerous creature to discourage predators. See Sunbitterns, Milk snakes, baby Cheetahs etc.
As far as I know, no one has reconstructed dinosaurs doing this, so I thought I'd give it a go.

My most recent animated size comparison is performing well, but not for the first time I've been hit with a fake copyright claim on the royalty free music within it. As a result my revenue (aka my primary source of income) is being held back until my appeal is cleared.
As you might expect this is mighty frustrating, & a combination of rage & inspiration after reading Dr David Hone's book The Future Of Dinosaurs had led me to make a new animated reconstruction & see if I can fire it off before the end of the month. With any lucky I can recoup some of the revenue I've been denied & share a really neat idea.

Intellectually I understand the numbers of how big Baryonyx was, but actually holding a piece of it & imagining how big the rest of the arm & body must have been, absolutely chilling! 🦖🦕🐦
Museum shennanigans!
In recent weeks I've started volunteering in the natural sciences department of my local museum, getting hands on with some delightful speciment. My current project is cataloguing & photographing the museum's taxidermy bird collection, digitising the records & noting down any repairs or anomalies in the specimens.
It sounds quite monotonous, but I'm genuinely really enjoying it, & its the kind of hard graft that needs doing for museums & scientific institutions to keep their collections up-to-date & accessible to all.
ANTARCTICA: 2099 BESTIARY ENTRY 01
CHLORATIN, Noasaurid
The Chloratin's body is covered in ragged green & brown plumage which allows it to blend into the mossy undergrowth of Antarctica's forests. Despite being over three metres long the Chloratin can sit motionless & undetected for hours on end, often waiting by game trails & water sources for prey to wander past & launching into an explosive ambush.
Reintroducing Antarctica: 2099!
Originally an attempt to modernise the 'lost world' setting, Antarctica: 2099 is my speculative evolution / post-apocalyptic tabletop RPG setting.
By the dawn of the 22nd century, climate change has caused the Antarctic ice sheet to melt, revealing the land beneath it. The rising temperatures & increased rainfall have revived the ecosystem that was hidden beneath it. Antarctica is now a mosaic of temperate rainforests, wetlands, valleys & mountains populated by a wild menagerie of prehistoric beasts that are specially adapted to live with Antarctica's binary seasons & unique geography.
This new habitable land draws the attention of the world, as climate refugees scramble to find a new home while political & corporate superpowers compete for control of Antarctica's lands & resources. New factions & power struggles arise, & the southern continent becomes a stage for conflict that will decide the survival of the human race.
