“I’ve worked with low income and under-served college populations for much of my professional life. Some thoughts on Trump U.

My students–in low income places like San Bernardino and Compton– came to college hungry to learn, overcoming significant obstacles.

Most were full time working adults with families, most were the first in their families to go to college.

Working with them was a privilege and an honor. You see IMMEDIATELY the impact Toni Morrison, or Sophocles, or Judith Butler has on them.

They’ve been taught a college education provides them tools to improve their lives. They’re hungry for those tools, & seize them right away.

To betray that trust, as Trump did with his sham university, is unconscionable.

But more importantly: it’s not just about ripping off some people, though it is that and it is illegal and a fraud.

College–particularly the liberal arts model–was designed for upper class white men, to develop in them civic values.

The liberal arts model pioneered at the end of the 19th century was never meant for women, for brown people, for the poor.

Because the last thing those in power wanted was to develop those people into functioning citizens of the republic.

Through a series of accidents, those people–poor people, brown people, women–got that liberal arts education in the 60s.

And immediately it led–as one would expect–to social revolt. Because now these folks had the tools of the humanities, how to be citizens.

The crisis in higher education of he last forty years is not a crisis, properly speaking; it’s the institution reasserting itself.

Everything we’ve seen in higher ed since the early 70s, from tuition increases to the trigger warning backlash, all has the same goal.

That goal is to return the liberal arts education– the training of citizenship–to upper class white males.

Trump U: is about more than just illegally defrauding people. It’s also part of a larger movement to delegitimize higher ed.

When you promise education to those you believe “shouldn’t have” that education, and then scam them, you perpetuate a two-tiered system.

So when talking about Trump U, we’re not only talking about an illegal scam. We’re talking about another way white supremacy asserts itself.

Okay, maybe not the end. Postscript: if you want to fight Trumpism, here is one tool among many:

Bring the work of the humanities to those for whom it was not intended. Particularly POC, poor folks, women. Do it OUTSIDE of the university.

This last part is crucial. No institution is your friend. And the university is an institution. Go around it.

Now is the time for book clubs and reading groups, community spaces, open networks. Eliminate the middleman which is the college classroom.

By all means also teach that in college! (I do.) But understand also that you’re working against a system, and that will never change.

So while you’re fighting the good fight in the classroom, look for ways outside the institution where you can also teach citizenship.

I learned to use the Oxford comma loooong before I knew it even had a term, so I’ve been conditioned to never forget about it.

But stupid fact: Journalists, or Canadian journalists using CP style, are taught to NOT use the Oxford comma. Why? I dunno. But it SUCKS.

A journalist would write “Skippy the dog, Sally Farhqwha and Jonathan…”

instead of the much preferred

A lot of teachers will go on about not using wikipedia as a source.

“It’s bad,” they say. “I will deduct points if you do it.”

Well wikipedia is actually a great source of information and fuck what your teacher said, you absolutely can use it.

The key though is knowing

A.How to use it.

B. How to source it.

and

C. whether it is good info or trash.

NowFirst Lets look up something on wikipedia. Say your writing a paper on Gregor Mendel and Mendelian Inheritance.

So you zoom over to the Wikipedia page on Mendelian Inheritance.

Now there is a lot of information here. Not all of it is strictly necessary for that essay you are writing. So you read through and suddenly you see something that is good info for your essay.

Boy oh boy this information is useful. To bad your teacher said No Wikipedia Ever.

However there is a loophole.

It’s right there.

No. Go closer.

You see that little four? Its a citation number. Think of wikipedia as it’s own essay. It got it’s information from other sources out there. Just like you are trying to right now. And since there is a citation, it’s going to be listed at the end of the wikipedia article.

Look at that you have your first citation. From Wikipedia.

And look. Do you see it. There is a link. It’s the blue words with the boxy arrow thingamajig.

That thing. Click it.

Why did you leave wikipedia you ask? Wikipedia is great. You have several sources from there. But There is more than what the put in to that wiki article. Those sources Wikipedia gave you are helpful. And now that you are at the source, you can utilize it.

But what if its a book that’s the source.

You can either head to your local library and see if they have it, order it, or avoid the book source. Online sources are just as valuable.

Also do not quote directly from the wikipedia. Quote from the source and then use quote citation.

And MLA citation. Use MLA citation. Since you are linked to the sources cite them. Not the wikipedia.

Your teacher will never know. And now you can finish that sweet essay you got planned.

I will point out here that this isn’t really a loophole; this is doing research the way it should be done. This is exactly what teachers want you to do when they say you can’t use Wikipedia as a source – you can’t cite Wikipedia itself because it’s not a reliable authority in and of itself, but it’s a great resource for finding material that is.

I want an inverse spy flick. The spy is a woman. Her whole team is made up of diverse women. All the villains are women. There is only one man in the entire movie and he is a Strong Male Character who is like 25 and decently ripped and has a scene where he slowly steps out of a pool wearing speedos because he is Confident and In Control of His Sexuality. We see his ass when he has to tug down his pants to get at the knife strapped to his thigh. His nipples are always erect for no fucking reason.

They are undercover in a nightclub. In order to keep their cover from being blown, he has to kiss another man. 

He knits to relieve stress and to keep his mind sharp. It is never discussed by any of the characters.

Someone asks him how he knows how to do Traditionally Feminine Thing. “I have four sisters,” he answers.

This is also how he knows how to fight while armed with nothing but a purse, a high heel shoe, and a can of hair spray.  During this fight, he is, for no apparent reason, shirtless.

The lead spy is Helen Mirren. She nails the Action Boy in the shower. There’s a lot of lingering closeups on the way the shower spray runs across his breathlessly ecstatic face. We also hear every breathless whimper of his climax, while out in the hallway Lucy Liu is smoking impatiently, a duffel bag full of rocket launchers slung over her shoulder. The President isn’t going to kidnap herself, here, christ. 

Action Boy emerges in a small towel, sheepish yet radiant. Helen Mirren emerges in a tuxedo, also smoking, also with a duffel bag of rocket launchers.

In one scene, the lead villain captures the Strong Male Character. He is, once more, inexplicably shirtless as she ties him to the chair. He makes some quips about his sexual independence before he is rescued by a sweat-drenched Helen Mirren, who kicks down the door and nukes everyone in the room. Strong Male Character’s hair remains perfect throughout the ordeal.

Strong Male Character is heartlessly slain in front of Helen Mirren’s eyes despite all of his skills and combat prowess. His body slumps to the ground, lifeless but supple. Helen Mirren makes a witty quip at Strong Male Character’s killers before quickly and dramatically slaying them all.

She steals one last glance at Strong Male Character. His beautiful eyes stare back from a handsome face with perfectly tussled hair, lips positioned a if in a gentle sigh. There’s no bringing him back now. Helen Mirren walks away, stronger than before. Strong Male Character’s death has hardened her, but given her the strength and resolve to complete her task.

How the ‘Ghostbusters’ trailer takes three steps forward and one step back

Ghostbusters “ain’t scared of no ghosts,” but is it afraid of well-developed, positive black representation?”

“The official trailer was released by Sony Pictures yesterday: 

What many are praising as a triumph (having 4 women on screen at the same time is still rare in 2016!) felt like a particularly harsh slap in the face after one of the wokest Black History Months on record; it certainly looks like Leslie Jones’ character is the butt of the joke and playing the “sassy Black woman” trope—again.

Throughout the trailer, we see Leslie Jones hollering, bitch-slapping, using the actual phrase “AWW HELL NAH,” and generally creating the kind of minstrel show we should have transcended by now. This is likely not her fault (she didn’t write the script), but it is reflective of a lack of diversity of talent and imagination in the writers rooms and on sets in Hollywood. I expected to love this trailer and reblog gifs on Tumblr for hours afterwards, and instead I got that familiar sinking feeling that this would be another upsetting failure to showcase a black woman in a positive light.

The fact that Jones plays a working-class citizen isn’t the problem, either. It’s that she’s a shallow representation of black women, juxtaposed with thoughtful representation of white women. She may indeed be a nuanced, fully-drawn character; the poster deems her a “municipal historian” and “metaphysical commando.” While this sentiment may be amplified in the full-length film, the trailer sure as Hell doesn’t show that.

Azie Dungey, the genius behind the Ask a Slave web series and writer for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, raised a good point on her Twitter account stating, “In comedy, there’s a place for the fool, the clown, the buffoon. She’s funny. But that should NOT be ALL black women do.”

Increasingly, I find myself wondering why it seems like this (being the loud, uneducated, black character in every scene) is ALL Leslie Jones does. In 2014, I wrote a blog post about her now-iconic stint on Weekend Update rubbing black women the wrong way. Since being added as a featured player on SNL, Jones has played this role ad nauseum. I’m ready for something new.”
