SUMMARY : Lothíriel of Dol Amroth marries Éomer King of Rohan, but she despises her new home, with its unfamiliar landscape and customs. She seeks to escape the only way she knows how, but when her plans go awry, she finds redemption in a place she never expected.

CHAPTER SUMMARY : Éomer gets ready for his night with Lothíriel.

PAIRING : Éomer / Lothíriel RATING : M┃WORD COUNT : 2.2 k chapter, 52 k total THEMES : arranged marriage, enemies to lovers, angst, whump, mental illness WARNINGS : suicide, medical procedures, violence - overall nothing graphic. Things start to get steamy in this chapter, and there is a smattering of foul language. A/N : A short and sweet chapter for today, and I hope that Éothain fans will be pleased. FANCAST POST : here

Once [Éomer] arrived, he was glad to see that his bath had already been drawn, and he scrubbed himself thoroughly, thinking of the way his body might feel to Lothíriel – how she would wear the artless, diffident expression she sometimes did when she was neither posturing nor stoic, and how she might extend her fingers, weaving them through the tapestry of muscles and scars that a life in the éored had dealt him.

Me: Mr. Nisilë, what did you like best about this chapter?

Mr. Nisilë: Well, you may hate me for saying this, but I liked that there's a dog. It just brings everything down to earth. What about you?

Me: I liked the fact that Éomer feeds people, and it goes back to a place of trauma and perceived scarcity. He does it both on a grand scale with the palace banquets, and he does it on a micro scale, with making sure that Lothíriel has a postworkout meal after their first training session, and spiriting away a strip of meat for Fang, and a currant bun for Lothíriel from dinner. You'd normally think that feeding people is a feminine characteristic, but I like to play with gender expectations, and I also think it's funny -- and very human -- for even a king to have a sense of scarcity when it comes to food. Considering what the realm has been through, it's not outside the realm of possibility.

Mr. Nisilë: Oh, ok. I guess I don't like the banquets all that much. It gives a sense of noblesse oblige.

Me: ?

Mr. Nisilë: Well, it's like, he's feeding everyone in Edoras, and it makes him feel better about himself as a ruler, but what about the people beyond Edoras?

Me: Well, what gives you the idea that he's not doing anything for the people beyond Edoras?

[What follows is a spirited discussion of what noblesse oblige is and isn't, whether it's a good or a neutral thing, whether it applies in such an instance, and how the flow of foodstuffs actually works in Rohan.]

Mr. Nisilë: Alright, alright. You know I wasn't being serious, right? I just wanted to be that person. [Laughs.]

....And yeah, this is completely typical behavior for Mr. Nisilë.
