“people pleasers are all manipulative self-martyring assholes who need to get a grip” people pleasing is a pattern of behaviour that develops as a fear response because of what has happened when you’ve failed to please others. and sure this can be detrimental to being able to have healthy relationships as an adult and it should be something that is slowly worked on over time. but let’s not pretend every people pleaser on the planet is doing it because they’re sick and twisted on purpose
Lucien telling Elain that she is never his to own, to command, or to claim. But that he is forever hers to use, to protect, to stand in her corner, and, if she chooses to, to discard.
Lucien giving Elain his own version of, “You have my name, my clan, my family, and, if necessary, the protection of my body as well.”
Stealing a comment from @princesserene because it is such a valid point.
Why when Elain is feisty or unfair to towards Nesta is it "She's such a bitch, she's really not as kind as she let's on and after everything Nesta did for her!"
But when Az is a dick to Lucien, to Rhys (after everything he's done for Az), and even to Feyre it's "Ugh, I feel so bad for him because he's struggling and upset about not getting a mate but he's really a good guy deep down!"
I'm sorry but is Elain not still a very young woman who just had her entire world ripped away from her ? Is she not someone who was forced to live in the same place that she grew up fearing? Was she not given a bond that she didn't ask for and is probably driving her emotions in a way she does not know how to handle? Is she not allowed to be uncomfortable by the tension that exists between her two sisters and she is struggling to know how to navigate that, struggling to deal with Nesta who had actively chosen to push the sisters away?
I will never understand the concept of babying a grown ass man who should know better and give him more empathy and understanding than a girl who is 1/20th of his age and just became a new species, someone who hasn't had the same amount of time to figure out her family dynamics as Az has been given to figure out his (not to mention he still hasn't fully).
Somehow he's allowed to act however he wants and it's okay, that he's still a good person and deserving of love but when a female goes off for once in her life, she's horrible and ungrateful.
🙄
Knowing SJM originally considered Nesta for Lucien but later changed direction because Elain surprised her proves Lucien was clearly the character SJM was actively trying to figure out long-term. The mate bond wasn’t created despite Lucien, it was reworked for HIM once she found the character and dynamic that complemented him the best.
So, the constant “Lucien isn’t important” bullshit narrative falls apart pretty fast when SJM was actively trying to find the right narrative path for Lucien from the start. She has outright said he’s one of her favorite characters, and Elain surprising her enough to shift course just means SJM found a dynamic compelling enough to change her original plans for him.The mate bond wasn’t some random consolation prize thrown together afterward, it was part of reshaping Lucien’s story once the right character clicked into place.
Because let’s be serious for a second, if SJM truly wanted to throw Lucien away as irrelevant, she easily could’ve kept Nesta with Cassian from the jump and left Lucien unmated entirely. Instead, she reworked the trajectory of multiple characters to make this dynamic happen. Authors do not restructure storylines for characters they don’t care about, no matter how badly some of you want to pretend otherwise.
But sure, some of yall keep gaslighting yourself into believing Lucien is irrelevant while the author literary restructured character dynamics around him, retconned his ancestry and tied him to Papa A. Some of these people read these books with their eyes closed and project their sad opinions when we all know the author doesn’t share them and would likely roll her eyes and laugh in their faces if she ever saw half of the crap they say about her favorite characters.
Nothing but the facts.
Happy 10 year anniversary to my babies Elucien 💛💛

Words, Words, and Nothing but the Words
Feyre's, Nesta's and Cassian's own thoughts and beliefs can influence our interpretation of the text or of how the actual interaction / actions between two characters might look. Anything they are seeing is through a lens that's colored by their personality, opinions, etc. and not necessarily to be taken as fact so I was curious what it would all look like if I only included the actual words / thoughts both Azriel and Lucien spoke to or about Elain (in chronological order and to the best of my knowledge, if anything is missing, it was unintentional):
“I can imagine"
“Yes. Cassian and I hail from a race of faeries called Illyrians. We’re born hearing the song of the wind.”“It is sometimes,” “If you are caught in a storm, if the current drops away. But we are trained so thoroughly that the fear is gone before we’re out of swaddling.”
“You’re my mate.”
“Get her back,”
“Where is he keeping her?”
“Tell me anyway. List all of them.”
“I survived well enough when I found you.”
“I need to find her.”
“My mate is none of your concern.”
“She insisted. Tamlin was … Things were bad, Feyre. I went in his stead, and I did my duty to the court. I went of my own free will. And we completed the Rite.”. “Please don’t tell Elain,” he said. “When we—when we find her again,” he amended.
“I’m getting my mate back.”
“Two,” he snapped, “I knew if I was correct and called you on it, you’d find a way to make sure I never saw her.”
“She is my mate and in my enemy’s hands—”
“You have the gall to question my priorities regarding Elain—yet what was your motive where I was concerned? Did you plan to spare me from your path of destruction because of any genuine friendship, or simply for fear of what it might do to her?”
“Tell me about her—about Elain,”
“Elain loves this lord’s son.”
“My mate is engaged to a human male.”
“I want to see her. Just once. Just—to know.”. “If she is worth fighting for.”
“And then I’ll ask your mate how he survived it—knowing you were engaged to someone else. Sharing another male’s bed.”
“Come get me when she’s ready.”
“What of—Elain?”
“I would never hurt her.”
“Is … is there anything I can get for you?”
Too thin. She must not be eating at all. How can she even stand? The thoughts flowed through his head, one after another. His heart was a raging, thunderous beat, and he didn’t dare move from his position a mere five feet away. She hadn’t yet turned toward him, but the ravages of her fasting were evident enough. Touch her, smell her, taste her— The instincts were a running river. He fisted his hands at his sides.
He hadn’t expected her to be here.
But there she was. His mate. She was nothing like Jesminda. Jesminda had been all laughter and mischief, too wild and free to be contained by the country life that she’d been born into. She had teased him, taunted him—seduced him so thoroughly that he hadn’t wanted anything but her. She’d seen him not as a High Lord’s seventh son, but as a male. Had loved him without question, without hesitation. She had chosen him. Elain had been … thrown at him.
“I’m going to assume that one of those cups belongs to your sister.”
“Do you mind if I help myself to the other?”. He tried to sound casual—comfortable. Even as his heart raced and raced, so swift he thought he might vomit on the very expensive, very old carpet
“There’s a plate of biscuits. Would you like one?”
He had not seen her entire face since that day in Hybern. Then, it had been drawn and terrified, then utterly blank and numb, her hair plastered to her head, her lips blue with cold and shock. Looking at her now … She was pale, yes. The vacancy still glazing her features. But he couldn’t breathe as she faced him fully. She was the most beautiful female he’d ever seen. Betrayal, queasy and oily, slid through his veins. He’d said the same to Jesminda once. But even as shame washed through him, the words, the sense chanted, Mine. You are mine, and I am yours. Mate.
Her eyes were the brown of a fawn’s coat. And he could have sworn something sparked in them as she met his gaze.
He knew without demanding clarification that she was aware of what he was to her. “I am Lucien. Seventh son of the High Lord of the Autumn Court.”
For a long moment, Elain’s face did not shift, but those eyes seemed to focus a bit more.
he clenched his teacup to keep from shuddering at the sound of his name on her mouth.
“Yes.”
“Yes.” It was all he could say.
He wished she’d shoved him out the window behind her. “It—it was a mistake.”
He fought against the bristling rage, the irrational urge to find the male who’d claimed her and shred him apart. The words were a rasp as he instead said, “I know. I’m sorry.” She did not love him, want him, need him. Another male’s bride. A mortal man’s wife. Or she would have been.
He wasn’t sure how to respond, so he said nothing, and drained his tea, even as it burned his mouth.
He wasn’t sure if she truly meant to address him, but he said, “No, lady. I cannot.” Her too-thin shoulders seemed to curve inward.
Her thumb brushed the iron ring on her finger. Another male’s ring, another marker that she was claimed—
“She needs fresh air.”
“Take her to the sea. Take her to some garden. But get her out of this house for an hour or two.”
“Would you like me to show you the garden?”
“But you heard something else.”
“What did you see,”
“Let me do something. About Elain.
It wouldn’t hurt to have a healer look her over. Externally and internally.”
“I think she went through something terrible,”. “And it wouldn’t hurt to have your best healer do a thorough examination.”
Lucien muttered something about not needing to be monitored
“I’m sorry,” he blurted.
“It—it was a tug. On the bond.”
“I’m sorry—if that unsettled you.”
“I’m sorry.”
“There’s a bond—it’s a real thread,” he said, more to himself than us.
“And I got to Elain’s end of it when she ran off.”
“No—I didn’t have time. I felt her, but …”
“I can help her,”
“What other?”
“Should we—does she need …?”
“She doesn’t need anything,”. “We’re the ones who need …” “A seer,” “The Cauldron made you a seer.”
“There is another queen?”
“You knew,” he said to Elain. “About the young queen turning into a crone.”
“The sixth queen is alive?”
“I’ll go.”.
“I’m not needed here. I’ll fight if you need me to, but …”
“Yes. Let me help in whatever way I can.”
“What about Elain?”
“I’m getting her back.”
“I’m getting her back.”
“Are you hurt?”
“Hold tight,” he ordered her, “and don’t make a sound.”
“We need Helion to get these chains off her.”
“This is Truth-Teller,” “I won’t be using it today—so I want you to.”
“It has never failed me once,” “Some people say it is magic and will always strike true.”
“It will serve you well.”
“Are you hurt?”
“Well, I never want to fight in another battle as long as I live, but … yes, I’m in one piece.”
“I heard—what happened. I’m sorry for your loss. All of you.”
“He was a good man,” he said. “He loved you all very much.”
“I heard you made the killing blow,”
“First—here. To help. Then …” “Who knows?”
“It would be my pleasure.”
“Are we …” “Are we supposed to get the sisters presents?”
“Sit. I’ll take care of it.”
“Wait,”. “Wait until everyone is seated before eating.”
“Happy Solstice,”
“You as well.” “Both of you.”
“No need to trouble yourself. I’m—”
“How is she?”
“Good. But is she still …” "Does she still mourn him?”
“To accept a life shackled to me?”
“She wants nothing to do with me.”
“I don’t think she’ll tolerate two minutes alone with me, so forget about two weeks.”
And as for here …” “I can’t stand to be in the same room as her for more than two minutes.
“Happy Solstice.”
“Enchanted gloves,” “That won’t tear or become too sweaty while gardening.”
“Thank you.”. “This will be invaluable.”
“What happened to Elain?”
“I know. I helped rescue Elain, after all.”
“There is an innate darkness to the Dread Trove that Elain should not be exposed to.”
“Not the ones under my command,”. “We won’t make the same mistake twice.”
“I am not always in this city to see my mate.” (sounds a lot like that Nessian line, doesn't it?)
“What happened to the duke?”
I'm not including the Bonus Chapter because I wanted to show how what's in the books doesn't match up to the Bonus Chapter as E/riels interpret it and if we count the E/riel moments that means the Gwynriel moments are just as relevant.
You can be physically attracted to someone without sharing any sort of depth to your relationship and that's what E/riels near kiss seems like to me.
To some, the bonus chapter is supposed proof of E/riel in love. But where is that evidenced in anything Az says of or about Elain in the books? Over the course of three books, he barely says a thing to her or about her. The very first time he really bothers to ask her a question that someone didn't tell him to say is when it's in regards to her powers.
And being protective does not equal romance or real / healthy love when you consider the relationship of Feyre and Tamlin. The romance is in the little moments of connection, the banter (especially in an SJM book), not the grand scenes displaying heroism. "He saved her! He wanted to die for her! It must be love!" Ummmm...... You actually need to have conversations for love to occur. Not to mention the IC (especially Az) saves everyone, including one another and that does not equal romantic love.
There is no point including the scene where Az and Elain chatted in the sitting room on Solstice (not to mention all we gleaned from that is a discussion about gardening) because we have multiple scenes of Feyre leaving Elain and Lucien alone to talk as well (before he headed off to find Vassa and immediately after the war). We don't know what those conversations were about and speculating is worthless especially because SJM couples don't fall in love off page.
The sum of Azriel's spoken interactions with or about Elain include:
Protecting her, making sure she doesn't have to serve them like his mother served others, and showing interest in what her powers could do for them. And his most major scenes with Elain are ones where he can play the hero or reminisce on being her hero 😬. The most picturesque or poetic E/riel scenes occur when they are from another characters perspective, not between the actual characters themselves, i.e., Feyre wondering why they weren't made Mates, the discussion that Az has never lent out TT, or her idea for a painting. She is planting ideas in the readers head rather than the reader witnessing any real feeling between the characters themselves. It doesn't tell us whether Az only lent out TT this time because he's never had to sit out of battle, it doesn't tell us whether Feyre gave real consideration as to whether Elain and Az have anything in common aside from being "polite". Elain was sitting silently in the garden with Az when Feyre brought up the question about mates and Elain was depressed and withdrawn. She based her questioning of fate off two people who weren't speaking and had barely spoken. Sorry but that's just strange and not how SJM builds romance. Feyre is great but she doesn't always have the best track record when it comes to her sisters.
I feel everything Az does with Elain is merely a reflection of the problems he has in relation to himself. His need to protect those he considers weak, his guilt over what happened to his mother, latching on to someone who shows a little interest in him after Mor's rejection. He never gives Elain credit for anything she's done as an individual. He doesn't talk to her about her sisters, her father, Graysen (the last two the actual sources of her trauma), that she helped saved him and Briar, Cassian and Nesta, how far she's come since she was first made (which even Nesta acknowledges), nothing. I just don't see love from Az and I truly think the Bonus Chapter is simply a result of Az feeling jealous that he wasn't given a bond (with someone) and frustration over everything he struggles with in his life. Mor not loving him, his guilt over the things he's done, the constant anger he always feels, feeling like he's the outsider. To him Elain, or the "idea of Elain", represents the path to filling all the holes he currently has inside of him and that's an extremely unhealthy mentality.
And Lucien's thoughts and spoken words? Without ever truly having the freedom to interact with her as he'd like because of the sisters consistently blocking their interactions as well as her own hesitation over having a bond, his Elain scenes include:
Wanting to know about her, wanting to help her heal, apologizing for what happened in Hybern, acknowledging her feelings for Graysen, supporting her vision by risking his life to see if he can bring back an army, expressing empathy over the loss of her father, giving her credit for her very major part in the war. Most of Lucien's interactions with Elain are about Elain. How she's doing, what she needs, acknowledging her as an individual outside of himself. Lucien isn't focused or driven by what Elain can do for him, his sole concern is helping her feel better whether that involves him or not.
And that all comes from the actual words Lucien speaks, not someone thinking "maybe Lucien thinks this!" or "maybe Lucien, that!". Even knowing that the female who chose him (Jesminda) ended up not being his mate as he'd thought for centuries, he is still fully committed to doing what's right for Elain. He doesn't owe Elain anything, he didn't ask for the bond, he didn't expect or want a bond, yet he's still nearly perfect when it comes to their bond and treating Elain as an individual outside of himself.
And when Feyre does interject her own thoughts, you see flaws in her thinking. "Elain might hate Lucien's gloves because she prefers to get her fingers cut up and dirty". There is no logic in that statement yet E/riels latch on to it, once again taking Feyre's word as gospel in the Elain / Az / Lucien situation.
Feyre herself is the one who told Lucien Elain wears gloves in the garden, there are multiple scenes of Elain wearing gloves in the garden and later, it's confirmed that Elain needs Feyre to pull thorns out of her hands because of torn gloves leading Feyre to think "if Elain had been wearing Lucien's gloves, nothing would have pierced her".
But at the end of the day, a romance between two characters is not going to happen because another character first predicted it or considered it. Rhys may have helped Nessian by sticking them together but they only happened because they were always meant to happen and he understood it's where they both were headed regardless of being too stubborn to get there themselves. They led themselves to that point and Rhys just nudged them along by placing them in close proximity.
The readers themselves are going to see the characters falling in love on page, not through the lens of someone else and it's wild that E/riels think an Elain and Az love story has already happened.
Always a great day to reblog this post after seeing the hundredth comment on how e/riel has had so much buildup over the course of 4 books. There is a yearning and a sadness in Lucien's thoughts and comments that does not exist in any of Azriels. Is there also discomfort and tension? Yes there is but would it be a SJM story without it? That fact that Sarah was able to convey so much of what Lucien was feeling and thinking about Elain in the main series and from someone else's POV (or choosing to have Feyre slip into his mind so we could get those thoughts) tells me all I need to know about who she wants Elain to end up with. She did not care enough about the e/riel ship to give Az's thoughts or comments about Elain any depth or real feeling within the actual series and the most Az ever said to or about Elain was when Lucien was away because he volunteered to carry through Elain's vision whereas Az didn't find it important enough to send someone. (I also realized I forgot another line where Lucien tells Feyre the one present is for Elain. That makes for a whole lot of orange on this post!)

“We don’t know where Lucien's loyalty lies. Now that he has such a great friendship with Vassa and Jurian. He could betray the IC.”
Huh?
Like, be so fr, Lucien gave up his friendship with the male who saved his life when he was about to be killed by his brothers, the same male he lost a literal eye for out of his loyalty to defend said male, for Elain.
He gave up his home, to become a homeless male for Elain.
He started being at the beck and call of Rhys, and his court for Elain
The first thing he did after fighting in a deadly war, was to run across shore to check if Elain was in once piece.
The first thing he thought about after sharing that he was SAed by Ianthe to Ferye was Elain
He went on a dangerous mission, that non of the inner circle could bear to go to, because Elain had a vision.
He broke against Hybren shackles displaying his hidden powers for the first time ever, for Elain.
There is literally no one, but Elain. No one comes before Elain to him. He lives eats and breathes Elain, and mind you, he does it respectfully.
Anywhere she goes, he goes, whoever she agrees with, that's where he is at. She could work with Koschei in the next books, and I can guarantee you that Lucien would blindly follow her to do that as well. And no one else would do that for her, not even Azriel. And I stand on that.
Isn’t it interesting that when Lucien thinks about leaving Elain turns to face him for the first time 👀👀👀
Claims she doesn't want him yet still can't stand to watch him walk away.
And people wonder how we can think Elucien is endgame 🤣
and she says nothing to him . She dgaf about that loser
Hun, are you new to SJM books?
A lot of her FMC’s start out not giving two craps about their love interest? It doesn’t mean they won’t end up together in the end.
And loser? If you think that’s loser behavior then why do you hype up Az so much?
He’s been panting over Mor for the past 500 years, thinking that some mating bond will snap into place for them when Mor has slept with several people around Az so he’ll take the hint that she’s not interested (Cassian included) and yet you criticize Lucien for wanting to see if something will happen with Elain for *checks notes* two years.
At least he has legitimate proof that they’re mates unlike Az’s constant theories that anyone he’s interested in romantically must be his mate. (Say what you will about Lucien and Jesminda, at least when he thought she was his mate, they were both deeply in love and consistently chose each other despite the odds being stacked against them. All Az has are theories)
Also did you miss the huge part of SJM’s books where she put down that mating bonds are hard to navigate and that even if they’re rejected, there will always be a tug? Did you miss the part when it’s harder for the male characters to ignore than the female characters? Did you miss the part where Rhys had to make a literal bargain with Feyre to get her to spend anytime with him at first? Did you also miss ACOFAS and the beginning of ACOSF where Nesta wanted nothing to do with Cassian and she had to be put into forced proximity with him in order for them to work out their issues and get together? Welcome to the plot set up for any SJM book….
And yet Lucien is trying to distance himself. He’s rarely in Velaris or around Elain, He currently has three different jobs that he moves between, He has a group of friends that like him and appreciate his insight, and he’s being set up to be a pretty powerful character. He’s far from the loser el/riel’s claim he is even if he doesn’t end up with Elain, he’s a lot more than just a potential love interest and a lot of you guys can’t stand that.
And if you’re going to claim he’s a loser? than I guess Az and him can be losers together.
At least Lucien can take some type of hint and tries to distance himself with the exception of Winter Solstice in ACOSF (where a lot of you guys tend to forget that he’s still friends with Feyre and Feyre in the narrative is currently going to die. Maybe she wanted Lucien there in case that would be the last time she was going to see him, and he stayed for her, but of course you guys wouldn’t think of another reason for him to be around, even though he also gives Feyre a gift every year and was around her and Rhys during Starfall, also going out of his way to ignore Elain until they got to gifts)
Also remind me when the last time Lucien gave Elain’s gifts to someone else? Or if Elain has ever given him his gifts back? At least if she has we haven’t canonically seen him give it to someone else, unlike a certain bat boy.
I’d say that was loser behavior? Wouldn’t you?
And it’s also loser behavior to comment this on anon and not let people enjoy their own ships on their own pages..yet here you are :)
Just do yourself a favor and block the Elucien tag if you don’t like them as a pairing. It’s much simpler than acting this way, I promise you. And not everyone has to ship your ship. Welcome to fandom spaces where people can ship whomever they want. Enjoy the fandom instead of being miserable. I promise it’s not that hard.
one thing i love about elain is how when she killed the king of Hybern she didn’t do it for revenge or bloodlust (even tho that would have been justified!!!!), she only did it to protect nesta….,,,,.And afterwards, she couldn’t leave the scene fast enough and denied that she’d even made the killing blow and somehow found flowers to place on her fathers corpse she is so brave and sweet i lovebher
i hope it’s alright, but i have some thoughts i’d like to share with you!
i’ve been rereading the first three books lately so my memory is fresh for the new books, and something i noticed about elain and azriel is that their dynamic comes from her finding him the most approachable. back in acomaf when feyre brings rhys, cassian & azriel to meet her sisters, she observes that azriel is the one elain seems the most relaxed around. so i wonder if maybe the e|riel red herring (because i do believe it’s a red herring) comes from elain latching onto the only thing (outside of her sisters) that feels truly safe in this strange new world, because we know that she gravitates towards safety, being the gentle & non-violent person she is. nesta even observed, if scathingly, that elain endears herself to people she believes will keep her safe out of self-preservation.
which is to say that i don’t think e|riel will be endgame because it won’t allow her to grow. if i read it right and she was initially drawn to him for how he felt safe/reassuring, i think ending up with him would ultimately be detrimental to her healing, especially since she’s struggling to adapt to the new world (and, again, clinging to the first sign of safety won’t help her adapt). her growth as a character, to me, seems at this stage like it will be contingent on her having to leave her comfort zone, which she won’t do if she has someone like azriel ultimately enabling it through his need to protect/shelter her. on the other hand, lucien represents the discomfort of the unknown and through that, the circumstances she’ll have to face if she’s going to grow.
so, because sjm doesn’t typically leave her characters to stagnate in their own stories, that’s why i think it’s safe to assume elucien will be endgame & we’ll be popping the biggest bottles once the next few books drop! 🍾
You’re absolutely right, anon.
I think she’s also growing out of the phase of wanting to be protected too. She’s been fighting back and showing signs that she wants to become a bigger help, do more and yet is met with nothing but a wall where her sisters and at least Azriel is concerned.
And I don’t doubt that’s why she gravitated towards Azriel. I love him, but he also has a bit of a white knight syndrome. It’s like he tries to save every female he can—and I think this stems from the fact he has so much trauma and conflicting emotions surrounding his mother and the way she was treated. He always wants to do right by females, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a romantic thing where most of the females are concerned.
Notice how the one rescue mission it’s noted to be slightly different compared to others?
After all he’s helped rescue Mor, Feyre, Nesta and Elain by this point—hell you can even count Briar too!
The only one ever mentioned that he slew all of the people there was with Gwyn. That was the mating bond foreshadowing there. And no, this isn’t me making that romantic because it’s a tragic and a horrible thing Gwyn went through, but that instance was also used to relay some heavy foreshadowing of what was to come with them.
But back to the point at hand, Elain being with Azriel—storytelling wise—would be pointless because she’s actively wanting to do more, but to choose to be with the “safe” option or the male that wouldn’t allow her to do anything would be counterproductive. It would be an awful choice and pairing, especially when she seems ready to spread her wings.
Lucien represents change and choice that was taken away from her—not necessarily him as an individual, but him as a concept. He does remind her that she was turned fae and she has this mating bond that unnerves her, but he’s also the only one right now respecting her wishes. He’s giving her time and space and even if he’s been around a bit here and there, he’s never forced her, pressured her, cornered her or anything having to do with the bond.
The only thing he’s done is kept check on how she’s doing and get her two lovely Solstice gifts.
At some point, she’s going to realize that he’s the only one out here believing in her and she’s going to take that step. I have no doubts in my mind that they’re gonna be exploring that bond and the moment they do? They’re gonna fall in love.

One of the reasons I love Elain saying “sunshine” is that it sets up how Lucien was made for her, and how the reason he survived as long as he did and endured everything he went through was so he could one day meet her and have it all make sense.
I don’t know how much more fated their story can be when it is already set up that Lucien will rule the court of the one place Elain said she wants to be.
That is also why I am not worried about the “what if nature had gotten it wrong” line because they both have yet to discover that connection.
That’s what their book is for.
One of the most difficult things is to remain kind when life and the world have failed you, repeatedly.
Lucien had a mother who loved him but a father — if one can even call Beron that — who loathed his existence. Still, despite the scorn, the hatred, he flourished into someone with so much love and compassion to give to others. Someone who fell in love with Jesminda, despite their differences and societal scorn, and was willing to do anything for her.
He watched her die under his father's orders, held down by his brothers, his kin, and that still didn't make him less kind. He found a home in Spring, a new purpose to live. There and beyond he continued to make friends, to be an emissary, to work to establish peace, not war.
When a human girl killed his friend, yes, he wasn't all that kind at first— but who would be? Yet that did not stop Lucien from growing close and befriending Feyre. It did not stop him from helping her during the trials under the mountain at the cost of himself (and make no mistake, Lucien's life and sanity was on the line there).
When Amarantha falls and they return, everything's changed, yet not. Tamlin spirals; everyone around him has to face the consequences, Feyre and Lucien both, in different ways. But Lucien still tries to talk to him, to convince him to let Feyre train, to get out, and Tamlin responds with violence. It's easy to forget that Lucien, in these circumstances, is as much under Tamlin's mercy as Feyre. He has no home, not since Autumn. What is there for him outside of Spring? Tamlin saved him and took him in at the risk of Beron's wrath. This isn't a friendship between equals either.
And when he goes to try and bring Feyre back, it's equal parts desperation — who is getting the brunt of Tamlin's rage, I wonder? — and equal parts care. It's also easy to forget that as far as Prythian was concerned, Rhysand was the greatest of monsters, a mind-controlling one. Lucien, for all his qualities, is no daemati to know Feyre was there willingly. Tamlin, as far as he can tell, is the lessr evil, the evil they know, the evil he has learned to navigate to the best of his ability.
And in the end, when the misunderstandings clear, Lucien does chose Feyre. He does chose to leave and do the right thing. And afterwards, he continues to put himself in harm's way, in contact with Tamlin, because who else is willing to step up and care for the shambles of Spring? No one. No one is. He stays out of loyalty to a home that is no longer a home, but who took him in when no one else would.
And all throughout, he remains kind. He remains generous and good, believing that the pen is mightier than the sword.
Lucien is not perfect. He has made mistakes, behaved in ways that weren't ideal, but who in this series can claim perfection? All throughout, once provided with all the information, he has consciously chosen the right path.
All throughout, he has remained gentle, compassionate, and believing in the good in people. That is something rare, something precious, something that is found again and again in the greatest of our heroes, those worthy of books, song, and tale.
Elain “His name is Lucien” Archeron. Gentle. Sweet. Polite. A lady.
Feyre says it : “a lady, that’s what Elain would become.” Lucien says it too. “My lady.”
And she is all of that … with everyone except Lucien.
With him, she ignores. Avoids. Withdraws. Very un-ladylike. Very intentional.
That’s the point. Lucien pulls her out of the neat, curated version of herself.
Meanwhile Mr. "If I offer you the moon on a string, will you give me a kiss, too?” Vanserra suddenly doesn’t know what to do with his words. Or himself.
He overthinks. He falters. The charmer goes tongue-tied. The lady stops being polite.
Together they'd learn to stop pretending, to stop performing...
With Elain, Lucien won’t have to be clever. Just honest.
And Elain would stop hiding behind politeness. With him, she’d speak when it matters. Push back. Choose herself.
They’d bring out what the other keeps buried. Her steel beneath the softness. His gentleness beneath the bravado.
