In a continuation of the AI-induced eshittification of all technology, Gmail is rolling out AI 'tools' to inboxes everywhere, with the AI system prioritising the emails it thinks you should see. Massive overreach of tech overlords notwithstanding, the implication is that the AI will 'help' clear your inbox by removing emails it doesn't think you need... so, if you are a Gmail user - or subscribed to my newsletter at all because we can assume the other big providers will start doing this - please consider adding my email to your contacts list so your provider knows you actually want to hear from me. I began working on Bezzina’s Emporium trilogy during my philosophy degree, while I was thinking about the rise of the far right, curbs on free speech and increasing public contentment for bigotry in the everyday.
It starts in 2015 - when liberal politics and social tolerance in the UK still seemed, relatively, on the up. If you’ve been wondering how we got to book bans in schools and beloved children’s authors spending their money ruining the lives of minority groups, this series is for you. Thank you to Valeria for making this wonderful trailer - it’s been such a pleasure working across several time zones and continents to bring the series to life!

A YA romantasy writer filed suit against another writer for copyright infringement, and as is always the case with these things, she padded her claims with delusionally spurious examples. The judge issued a 160-page ruling against the plaintiff where you can tell from the start how resentful they (or whatever clerk actually did the work) are to have been forced by duty to have read the works in question.

the thing about media literacy is that understanding why the author chose to specify that the curtains are blue is the same skill set as understanding that the way the author characterizes all black characters as angry or all chinese characters as meek and silent is racist. it is the same skill set as being able to identify when a news source is biased or when someone is feeding you propaganda. the ability to ask "why did this person choose to present this premise in this specific way?" is a critical skill in a world full of misinformation. why are the curtains blue? maybe it's a characterization detail. maybe it's extraneous worldbuilding. why is this character written as being right all the time? maybe you're intended to disagree with them. maybe it doesn't matter. maybe you should still ask why.
