the song smoke by liz phair, the album opener from her electroclash-pop-rap-absurdist-post-post-post-post-ironic-satirical-antisatirical masterpiece where she reflected on her experiences working in a career field dominated by men in order to critique the state of the music industry and the socioeconomic standing of women within it, 2010's funstyle, brought the world of electroclash to its knees.

the dark, heavy beats of the track backing invoke stylistic similarities to ladytron's first two albums (604 to a greater degree than light & magic) or the early work of peaches. in some regards, it even leans outside of electroclash, possibly towards trip hop. the production on this track is not dissimilar to the production of nellee hooper, graham massey, tricky, howie b, and, of course, björk herself on her 1995 album post, i find a shocking amount of similarity between liz phair's smoke and the tracks army of me and enjoy.

the instrumentation on this track harks back to that of the band le tigre, electrocute's 2004 album troublesome bubblegum, and even the guitars on lesbians on ecstacy's 2004 self titled album.

the spoken words elements which seem to be influneced by the work of chicks on speed are present not only on this song, but remain a prominent feature throughout the album. phair's fearless approach towards absurdity and the methods she uses to embrace it (rapping, avant-garde electronic production, extreme vocals, etc.) reminds me of chicks on speed's 2003 album 99 cents. thematically, funstyle and 99 cents are not identical, but certainly would agree with each other as critiques of superficial, greedy, exploitative industries.

her vocals on the track are not unlike those of alison goldfrapp on 2005's strict machine and the "you dummy" sample in the chorus is reminiscent of the "you big dummy!" sample used throughout M.I.A.'s 2005 release, URAQT.

liz phair has never failed to exceed the expectations her listeners place upon her. this is yet another example of how the always controversial, frequently underestimated often overlooked, sometimes overlooked for a good reason, never forgotten artist has forever altered yet another genre of music. first the indie rock world with her demos and 1993's exile in guyville, then her overhated attempt to break into the ever expanding teen pop genre with 2003's self titled, and, as we can conclude from the analysis above, the world of electronica with 2010's funstyle. keep in mind, smoke is just one song from liz phair's TRUE magnum opus. the rest of this album contains even more brave, daring pieces of electroclash inspired music that should not be overlooked.

As a black girl, it’s just impossible for me to ignore the similarities between black face and drag as phenomenons that were/are incredibly normalized in popular culture. Both are offensive exaggerations of an oppressed class to the point of caricaturization by the oppressor class for entertainment and perpetuate harmful stereotypes. The defence line drag apologists always use is that drag is an exploration of gender expression especially for gender non conforming males who were never able to express their femininity and that’s why it’s different from black face in that sense which is just blatant racism. What they don’t know is that white performers often used the excuse of exploring their “inner negro” when in blackface and it was actually a very popular response to blackface criticism lol. And even then..why should women be mocked and made sexual objects in order for men to be able to “express themselves” it’s really just grade A sexism so many drag performers have expressed not thinking that women should participate. There is no other explanation for why drag queens are overwhelmingly much more popular than drag kings and that’s the fact that embodiments of men aren’t seen as jokes. Recently read this really fascinating paper that talks about how similar the two are I strongly recommend it

Even from an aesthetics standpoint, the comparison of blackface and drag makeup maps almost 1 to 1. The features are exaggerated to the point of hideous caricature in both cases, which can only exist when you intend to mock those features. As someone else said, it’s a minstrel show. Add in the historical context that women were banned from stage, and arguably still are barred from preforming in drag shows, just now via social consequence... It’s strikingly similar to how black actors (and those of other races as well) were historically barred from preforming and today are still under-selected for roles... Once you see the connection between drag and blackface, it is impossible to un-see.

Sooooo as someone going into fields that contain biology I think it's time we talk about how we see it from a fully male perspective. It's gotten to the point for me that I cannot listen to men talk biology, specifically reproduction. When we talk about male competition, we talk about it as "the right to mate". However this sees reproduction as a sentient, default specimen (male) doing to the secondary, inanimate vessel (female). In reality males fight for the CHANCE to win female attention. Females will forever be more selective sexually in the majority of animals. This is because females expend more energy in reproduction (the simple fact eggs are the larger gamete). Even in most fish, where care is commonly paternal, you will find heavy selection on the female side. Females are not fought over like an object to earn or "inseminate" the pure attention we give is what's fought over. Females almost always control their species. Look at tiger endler guppies. It may seem like the males harass females, but females actually CHOOSE exactly which sperm they concieve with and retain sperm for up to a year (trust me I have SEEN it myself). There's also this notion that males are all about genetics while female is about love or is about being a vessel. That's laughable. Females want their genetics to succeed just as much as males. They just dont have to fight as much because they have the limited gamete, its not a competition to be chosen when the other sex is unlimited. And the way we talk about paternal vs maternal. Paternal animals are all about "self preservation" but maternal animals are robots to their love. Dont get me started on how people act when I tell them my betta males do the incubating. We like to see it as a male competing to spread his genes and not a female choosing to complete her genes with the perfect individual. Every time someone tries to symbolize sex this shit comes into play. Male is the default that uses female as his tool. Be it describing it as penetration, fertilization, and much more. On the topic of "fertilization" did you know that the egg chooses the sperm? Did you know eggs are more complex than sperm? Did you know that eggs are not infertile without a sperm they just arent a embryo? We see female as defined by male, made valueable by male. A vessel filled by male. I think it's time for females to realize that nature is actually quite female centered. Hopefully as we get more women in this field, that will change. Because right now I'm starting to learn that a lot of science is worded in a way so males can cope with actually being quite lesser than females and at our disposal.

Sorry this is random but I'm thinking about this while I can't sleep -- I had my first day of a film history class today and we were talking about who wins awards like the Oscars and my prof. made a comment about sometimes all it takes is white mediocrity with the remark "Greta Gerwig I'm looking at you"

And like I'm not a huge Greta fan but really that's the director you used when calling out undeserved accolades......the one mainstream woman director.....🙄 okay

White women are easy targets because you can call out the privileges afforded to white people without actually threatening real power. You can also couch all kinds of misogyny in what sounds like liberal/progressive language. And the white women will mostly agree with you and claim they deserve to be targeted, no matter how misogynistic it is, because women are socialized to be agreeable like that. You can't pull the same shit on white men because they have more ability to just ignore you and/or retaliate. They're not expected to be agreeable, their social status is in no way threatened by these kinds of criticisms, and they are far more likely to have the power to hit back.

Since I'm living with elderly, traditional and slightly xenophobic people, I wasn't able to escape the cursed question; 'Why don't you have a boyfriend?'

And I can't come out to these people okay, the aftermath would ruin me. So I had to find an alternative answer that depicts me as a good christian woman who is allowed to be in their home.

I had the script ready in my head, so when the woman came at me with 'You're young and attractive, why don't you have a boyfriend?' I was like listen. I am more than that. I am loyal, honest, hardworking, intelligent, knowledgeable, resourceful, responsible, considerate, gentle and kind. There's no male out there who is my equal. I'm unwilling to settle for anything below.

Women always laugh in surprise when I start loudly complimenting myself in front of them; women are not supposed to brag. So I get a 'you're speaking so highly of yourself?' and I go 'Well people forget how great I am! Somebody has to say it. And I'm humble too, on top of all this.' it usually gets a laugh. And I know I'm right, I'm young so I only discovered some of my good traits, there's probably loads more great stuff I don't even know about.

This ended the boyfriend discussion because the woman knew I was right. There is no male equal for me. Males will always exploit and cheat a honest, kind woman, and she knows I don't deserve that. 

This also saves me the more painful discussion of my biggest flaws; inability to locate another lesbian in my entire country and the fact that I let women get away with doing just anything to me because I'm weak. But thats a problem for another day. "I'm too good for all m*n" keeps me safe from lesbian allegations for now.
