Where the fuck did they get those numbers from?
“Average” means the small number of superwealthy are dragging the numbers way up, I assume
Dr Glass did a quick and dirty run of the numbers, and discovered that The Average American spent $67 a year on purchasing Fine Art. That’s almost $6 a month on unnecessary marble sculptures, Renaissance paintings and priceless antiques! Why, that’s $24 a month on Fine Art purchases per family of four - that’s absolutely ridiculous! I can’t believe the average American family WILLFULLY spends that much money in the fine arts market.
That could be cut out of your budget without noticing it! Nobody NEEDS to have Old Masters hanging in every room of your house, and until every man, woman, child and baby SAVES that $67 dollars each year instead of blowing it on priceless sterling silver soup tureens, they shouldn’t complain about being poor! EVERYONE is culpable in wasting money collecting COMPLETELY needless amounts of antiquities and modern masterpieces!
… if it isn’t obvious, the Average American (a population that necessarily includes babies, retired veterans, schoolchildren, broke students, minimum-wage workers, and folks of every walk of life) does NOT spend $6 a month on fine art. The numbers are dragged upwards by the 1% of Americans who do.
Anyway, I thought this was a super cute little exercise, and Dr Glass gave me permission to share it here. The numbers are quick and dirty.
First, he found a source for the statement that “the global art economy grew [in 2017] with $63.7 billion in total global sales.” [discussion article x] [published report x] (Note that the report it’s based on is easily found via the discussion article. Note that the lead economist is named and assigned responsibility. Note that the methodology is VERY clear.) The linked article stated that the United States accounted for 35% of this commerce. 35% of 63.7 billion is $22,295,000,000 - we will say $22 billion dollars for convenience. Therefore, the citizens of the United States spent a total of $22 billion dollars on purchasing Fine Art in 2017.
In 2017, the population of the United States of America was 325.7 million.
22 billion divided by 325.7 million is 67.
Therefore, each American spent an average of $67 on Fine Art in 2017.
As this apparently did not happen - as the average American is not in a position to buy many priceless antiques - then it must have been the stereotypical Upper Classes who bought the art.
From the source above: “Arts Economics teamed with UBS to survey 2,245 American millionaires and billionaires (the kinds of people who don’t usually like to fill out surveys), and found that 35% of them collected art and antiques in 2017.”
There you go. That’s who bought all the unnecessary fine art. The responsibility for “unnecessary” and “non-essential” spending of money should be assigned to the people who spent it, not distributed equally among the entire population. Because while you CAN say that the “average American spent an average of $67 on Fine Art in 2017,” those numbers are weaselly and unhelpful. They are not a reflection of individual experiences, and do not accurately convey the economic reality of the nation - so what good are they?
It’s fairly unclear how USA Today gathered their own numbers - they claim it was “research commissioned by Ladder and conducted by OnePoll” - but although I was eventually able to work out that Ladder appears to be a financial corporation with a life insurance arm, I was unable to find their original research in order to scrutinize their methodology. The supposed “report” is not easy for a trained researcher to find, it certainly wasn’t conducted by a named reputable economist, and they could literally be pulling numbers out of their asses, not publishing them anywhere, and sending a junk press release to a journo at USA Today.
To Quote a phrase popularized by Mark Twain: “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.”
To Quote my English Teacher who should have been teaching math but he had a boner for Shakespeare: “If statistics ever provoke an emotion other than discombobulation, whatever’s being cited has, at best, been over-simplified to the point of uselessness, but is more likely pulled directly from someone’s ass.”
also i want thanos to have a counterpart villain called “sex thanos” who goes around planets and makes people fuck more so that there’s even more people and the populations get even bigger and he’s the bane of normal thanos’s existence
May I introduce you to Eros (codename Starfox), who is literally Thanos’ brother and his actual super power is ‘Fuck Magic’
I really don’t understand anyone who still posts selfies at this point like. we’re all fully aware that the feds are monitoring us and using our photos to build a surprise database that will help them later it’s just not fucking worth it anymore
Human brain: security culture
Monkey brain: validation nice
I will Not be cockblocked by spy nimrod fucks
I haven’t ever really talked about this before but I’d like to introduce a concept that I’m going to call “security nihilism.”
Here’s the deal: You’re already burned.
It’s over! There’s no going back! Your face is in a database and your DNA is in a database and your social profile is in a database and there’s nothing you can do about it. Even if you didn’t put it there somebody else did. Congrats, we’re all fucked!
Facebook builds shadow profiles on people who don’t have accounts. Surveillance cameras are everywhere. Your cousin signed up for Ancestry and your brother did 23&Me.
So what can you do about it? Essentially nothing. So there’s no point in panicking.
You know what you have to do if you want some kind of privacy? Start leaving your phone at home randomly. Or at work randomly. People don’t think about the fact that their cell phone’s location data (which is constantly tracking even if you don’t enable location data for apps) is a more effective way of tracking them than anything they post online and it’s *real* easy to get a warrant for that data. And if you suddenly ditch your phone for the first time in several months it’s suspicious as FUCK.
Automated license plate readers track your drive. Do you commute? Do you drive the same way every day? Why the sudden change to your routine? What were you doing that you needed to park your car and wander away suddenly? What are you hiding?
Complaining about people posting selfies when companies are compiling DNA databases sharing them with the FBI is like blaming ocean pollution on people using plastic straws when about half of plastic ocean trash is abandoned fishing equipment.
Do you use gmail? You’re fucked.
Do you have a bank account? You’re fucked.
Do you use public transportation? You’re fucked.
Do you go to school? You’re fucked.
Do you have a job? You’re fucked.
I had to track down a guy who didn’t have facebook or social media profiles, didn’t have a listing in the phonebook, didn’t have a linkedin. I started with his first and last name and ended with his supervisor’s phone number, a ten year history of his income, and his home address. I got to it through his son’s little league team.
And I’m fucking J. Random Nobody. I don’t even have shiny databases full of tracking data.
So you’re already burned. There’s no going back, we passed the tipping point. Even if you threw out your computer and shut down all your accounts and smashed your cell phone and lived in the woods there’d be video of you walking out of town for the last time and satellite images of wherever you ended up setting up camp.
I was never going to be able to hide from the cameras on the streets and the data in my cell phone and the scanners that look at the license plate of my car and the information that my school sold about my age and income and interests. So fuck it. Share a selfie.
[fyi the secret to actual opsec is to trust no one and to have no discernible patterns - being in a facial recognition database doesn’t matter if you make a point of not showing your face when you’re doing whatever you’re doing that you want to keep quiet; your goal isn’t to evade the facial recognition software as you’re on the run from the government, your goal is to never even show up on their radar]
Sorry folks, all of this is right. Getting judgmental at other people’s selfies and masking it as an opsec fail is just ignorant :D
Lol well shit 🙃
verizon just finally giving up on tumblr because they cant figure out how to make money off its users is honestly not shocking to me whatsoever because how the actual fuck DO you make money when the kinds of posts people are making on this awful website are deep fried doge memes asking for feet pics or whatever

Mind games
There are two circles, one of them is blue one is red. What if I told you one of them was bigger? Which one would you think is bigger? The blue one? No, you are wrong. The red one? No again. Actually none of them are bigger. They are the same size. You just thought that because I told you so. This proves that humans are easily manipulated.
I’m in a facebook group for video synthesis enthusiasts and they post the weirdest shit

heh……. kind of like when h
it’s like in the movie when he
“wow, janice! i sure do love the Rodent Dome!”
what the fuck are those
Those are children
my girlfriend wanted more than the amount of children you can adopt in skyrim so she taught herself how to mod it so that you could adopt them all, and uploaded it to a skyrim modding community so other likeminded player could utilize her code.
months later, an update was added to skyrim that was basically her code, verbatim, lifted directly from the mod, without credit or even permission. this made her so angry that she, at age seventeen, booked a flight to maryland, went to bethesda headquarters and demanded to see todd himself to yell at him.
of course, she was immediately denied this request and escorted out of the building because she was a scary six foot seventeen year old canadian lesbian who had flown all the way to yell at a man who probably had no idea her code was stolen, but she is still legitimately, 100% furious with him to this day
i fucking love her.
FACE YOUR CRIMES, HOWARD
i’ve long since retired from collecting fake internet stories but this stands out in my mind as one that’s just so bold faced and iconic because at no point in skyrim was there an update that allowed you to adopt more than 2 children. i love this post
when Lemony Snicket wrote “I will love you if I never see you again, and I will love you if I see you everyday” that hurt me
how much scarier would a frog be if it ran instead of hopped .. u just hear plat plat plat plat coming towards u and u look down and it’s a frog going at full speed
