We are heartbroken to share the tragic news of the death of Jonathan Jossβbeloved actor, artist, and gay iconβwho was fatally shot on June 1, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas. He was 59 years old. Authorities are investigating the possibility of a hate crime.
Jonathan, of Comanche and White Mountain Apache heritage, rose to fame as the voice of John Redcorn on King of the Hill and appeared in acclaimed films such as The Magnificent Seven and True Grit. Beyond his screen work, he was a tireless advocate for Native sovereignty, queer visibility, and authentic representation.
In recent years, Jonathan came out publicly as a gay man and remained fiercely proud of both his Indigenous and queer identities. He is survived by his husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, with whom he shared a life rooted in love, art, and community.
Jonathanβs legacy is one of courage, truth, and unapologetic presence. His impact on two-spirit and LGBTQ+ Indigenous youthβand on all of us who saw ourselves in his workβcannot be overstated.
We mourn his loss. We honor his voice. We demand justice. Rest in power, Jonathan Joss. You are remembered. You are loved.
I want you to remember:
The fascists hate you too and they just will pretend otherwise until after they've killed the rest of us, before they turn on you.
Thanks to whoever tried, but I knew they'd never allow it.
Let's do it the old fashioned way. Spread it far and wide.

Published in coloration with Transfighters/Traction Project,Β A Self-Defense Study Guide for Trans Women and Gender Non-Conforming / Nonbinar
The threead continues:
All people have a tendency to be unconsciously biased toward seeing trans women as untrustworthy, unsafe, lacking vulnerability, the problem to be solved rather than a person to be taken care of. And this is not less true in trans and queer and feminist communities. Itβs just more unconscious, and more propped up with social justice, feminism, queer lib, leftist, and anti-oppression beliefs. This book is talking about this in context to a physical public situation of harassment, but this is true of social conflicts too, including on social media, in friend groups, in all kinds of situations. The unconscious bias also gets taken advantage of by people who know what theyβre doing and hide behind that bias to make their mistreatment of transfems seem reasonableβagain, often supported with social justice and anti-oppression rhetoric. TERFs arenβt the only people who do this! It felt so incredible to see this spelled out in print, plain as day, an actual book calling out a real thing Iβve experience more times than I can count, that all transfems I know go through, and that I still feel crazy for seeing because thereβs so much gaslighting about it. You know how when you KNOW something is real, but you feel defensive about that knowledge, like you have to be ready to hold onto it, and then you see something confirming that knowledge for you in no uncertain terms and it feels like βwow maybe I wasnβt crazy all this time!β Thatβs how I felt seeing this.
The book linked is free to read and download. See the link above.
if youβre a transfem you should read this, and if youβre not you should reblog it for your transfem friends & followers, the advice in here is extremely good and the grips breaks are not hard to practice!!

The 2023 Gender Census is now open!
[ Link to survey ]
The 10th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is nowΒ open until 9th May 2023.
Itβs short and easy, about 5 minutes probably.
After the survey is closed Iβll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like weβre part of a huge and diverse community.
If you think you might have friends and followers whoβd be interested, please do reblog this blog post, and share the survey URL by email or at AFK social groups or on other social networks. Every share is extremely helpful - itβs what helped us get 40,000 responses last year.
Survey URL:Β https://survey.gendercensus.com
The survey is open to anyone anywhere who speaks English and feels that the gender binary doesnβt fully describe their experience of themselves and their gender(s) or lack thereof.
Thank you so much!
