Art Tutorial Preview

This one was a short weekly tutorial briefly talking about gesture drawing, shapes and how to reference. Next week I’ll do a reference sheet with dynamic poses, I didn’t get to it this week cause I ran out of time. Anyways I hoped this helped some people!

People often say to me: “You draw like some kind of inhuman machine.  If I eat your brain, will I gain your power?”  The answer is yes, but there is another way. The key to precise drawing is building up muscle memory so that your arm/hand/fingers do the things you want them to do when you want them to do them.  Teaching yourself to draw a straight line or to make sweet curves is just a matter of practice and there are some exercises you can do to help improve. If you’re going to be doodling in class or during meetings anyway, why not put that time to good use?

Look at this scar. This is proof that I was once a mother. I gave up my body and my child for my country. There is nothing left inside me now. Nothing at all. No hatred, not even regret. And yet sometimes at night I can still feel the pain creeping up inside me.

no worries!! i did answer this before, but i’ve since deleted it, so here we go! i’ll be honest with you- my process is pretty simple, although it’s reaaally not the most efficient. basically, i actually color under my sketches instead of creating actual line art, then merge the layers all down.

and then the process of line art begins… i start a new layer on top, and using a large brush and the eyedrop tool to pick colors, i make thick lines to cover up my original messy sketch.

then using a thinner brush and the eyedrop tool again, i clean up and sharpen those thick lines into more polished ones of various weight!

and then i continue doing this process for the rest of the drawing. thick lines…

then a thinner brush to clean up and detail!

just rinse and repeat for however long it takes, and voila ! that’s it :D

Egyptian Effigy ‘Voodoo’ Doll, Circa 3rd-4th Century AD

This small clay effigy doll was discovered in Egypt in a terracotta vase with a folded lead tablet that had been inscribed with a magic binding spell (very creepy love spell). The effigy has her feet tied together and her arms tied behind her back. She is pierced with 13 pins (one in the top of the head, one in the mouth, one in each eye and each ear, one each in the solar plexus, vagina, and anus, and one in the palm of each hand and in the sole of each foot).

This  is considered ritual detritus and the “spell” on the tablet translates to (from Greek):

“Lead Ptolemais, whom Aias bore, the daughter of Horigenes, to me. Prevent her from eating and drinking until she comes to me, Sarapammon, whom Area bore, and do not allow her to have experience with another man, except me alone. Drag her by her hair, by her guts, until she does not stand aloof from me … and until I hold her obedient for the whole time of my life, loving me, desiring me, and telling me what she is thinking.“

This is what a baby great white shark looks like.

It’s actually a baby salmon shark, seen here being carefully rescued from having beached itself, because it is an oceanic danger puppy and like most wild animals, will bite if confused/scared. (source here)
