So I'm reading Oren Kessler's "Palestine 1936" and I'm still working on getting through the first chapter because while the writing is very good (imo), I keep getting pissed off at things.
Such as the treatment of Jews worshipping at the Western Wall and how the poor treatment (poor treatment is an understatement) lasted for centuries prior (and worsened in the 20th century).
Through the first decades of the twentieth century, Jewish rights at the wall had remained tightly circumscribed. It was property of the Islamic waqf, as was the plaza behind it that Jews called the Temple Mount and Muslims the Haram al-Sharif, or Noble Sanctuary, home to Al-Aqsa Mosque.
The status quo technically banned Jews from raising their voices or even praying at all, though the authorities typically tolerated worship so long as it remained muted. On high holidays, Jews were generally allowed to use benches, a shofar (ram’s horn), and a screen to divide the sexes.
(but peace and harmony amirite? It's fine that Jews lived as second-class citizens and their right to worship at their holy site was restricted /sarcasm)
On Yom Kippur Eve 1928, an Ashkenazi beadle brought a larger Torah ark than usual to the site, and some mats, lamps, and a screen. Police sought to have it removed, but the beadle would not let go—when a constable threw it down the twenty-foot, cactus-filled valley running out from under the Old City, the beadle went tumbling down with it.
Bloodshed had been avoided, and London swiftly issued a White Paper reaffirming the status quo ante: The wall belongs to the Islamic waqf.
Ah yes another empire reaffirming that the other oppressive ruling power actually totally has full rights. How good, right? (Note my sarcasm again)
And from everyone's favorite (I say sarcastically), Grand Mufti Hajj Amin al-Husseini:
“Having realized by bitter experience the unlimited greedy aspirations of the Jews,” he told the government, “Muslims believe that the Jews’ aim is to take possession of the Mosque of Al-Aqsa gradually on the pretense that it is the Temple, by starting with the Western Wall of this place, which is an inseparable part of the Mosque.”
IT'S THE SAME SHIT whether it's the 1920s or the 2020s "The Jews are trying to take over the Al-Aqsa Mosque!" No, fuckers, they just want to worship at their holy site, aka the Western Wall.
And of course, you can't talk about the region of Palestine without bringing up Nazi Germany. Kessler mentions an excerpt of Hitler's Mein Kampf that pissed me off.
In the final chapter, Hitler likewise mused:
If, at the beginning of the War and during the War, twelve or fifteen thousand of these Hebraic corrupters of the nation had been subjected to poison gas such as had to be endured in the field by hundreds of thousands of our very best German workers of all classes and professions, then the sacrifice of millions at the front would not have been in vain.
"Hebraic corrupters of the nation" up to 100,000 German Jews actively fought in WW1, which would be rather important during Nazi-era Germany given that initially Jewish veterans would be considered exempt from laws like "The Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service". Obviously, these exemptions would quickly be overturned. Around 12,000 German Jews would die during WW1, and thousands of German Jews would receive the Iron Cross. Antisemities live in their own world separate from reality where Jews slot into whatever role their imaginations conjure up whether it's the myth of the "Backstabbing Jews" or "Jews are trying to steal Al-Aqsa".
