the worst part about her late husbands demise, was the fact that his living will and testament neglected to have mary-jane’s name written under ownership of the home her and gabriel shared. having to pack up and move back home was one disaster, but the heavy sum was to make made it all better — she just needed time to go by faster so it was in her grasp. nevertheless, she was the first at the table after the announcement had come through as a letter under her door. of course, her father neglected to even tell her in person that this dinner was happening, never taking as much as a few breaths of acknowledgment her way at a time.
her brothers entrance was to be expected, a simple roll of her eyes at the swift movement he made to the bar cart — as if she didn’t have a full glass of vodka in her water cup at that very moment. ❝ beatrix, you truly believe he would explain that to anyone already seated at this table ? ❞ mary-jane believed vincent to be the only one to know, and if he didn’t, she would soon walk out. the click of her heels to be the only sound. ❝ did your daft mother tell you then, franklin, ❞ she coerced with a light grin and a side eye as drinks were served to the lot around the table. good, double the poison tonight.
@viiincent
frank had received the letter from his mother a day ago, it was cordial to say the least, nothing other than that they requested his presence, and he was honestly thinking about not going, he knew how much it would derail him to be all in the same room as each other. but, the fight to make sure trixie made it out of this family meal longer mattered more to him. he didn’t bother to dress up, he came straight after work still in his work uniform, by the time he had entered the house he had gone to the bar cart and grabbed the biggest glass he could find and filled it all the way up to the top before grabbing another smaller cup and walking over towards his old seat the table, next to his mother, right in the middle, it was still cold just like he had left it, he had spread his legs out underneath, sinking into his chair as he listened to his step siblings talk over each other like they always did, and he had barely smiled, just the thought of knowing how this night would go amused him because this time, he knew, that it wouldn’t revolved around him. it never did.
the last time they had one of these dinners it was an announcement for mj’s engagement and he had smiled into his glass, before setting it down, looking at mj who, of course, made a snide comment. his face was passive, his eyebrow raised. “how would i know, mj? you see, i have my own place now and don’t live here anymore—unlike you—i’m about as in the dark as all of you are.” he sneaks a glance at trixie, ever so passive and quiet, and when his mother walks in the room he doesn’t spare much of a glance at her. it was a hard thing, growing up in this house that held so many ghosts that frank tried to get rid of but he never could have. he knew that he wasn’t a crabbe, most days he hardly even felt like a longbottom because the only one that he had loved and missed most, was dead. he finishes the bigger glass of whiskey before he slowly starts to sip the second one. “so,” he says, a hint of humour in his voice, “who’s died or getting married?” that’s why they only all ever came together for as a family, right?

it was only when he spoke again that alice took a second , just a moments break from the chaos , setting down her quill and flashing a smile frank’s way . got to get those few extra bits of work in over him . ❝ well dare i say it’s doing wonders for your figure ? ❞ and she couldn’t quite tell if it was her tease or the delay in actually paying attention to him that invited the jab with his wand . ❝ though i’m not sure what more a case could need than caffeine and nicotine to see it through ❞ it’s poke and a tease but she still follows along , sliding the paperwork to one side before unwrapping the sandwich . ❝ happy now ? ❞
he had watched her for a second, before he made himself look away and back down at the pile they were slowly building up. he knew that she was lost in a trance of work because he would’ve been the same way had it been anyone else. there was also their small competitive streak but he figured he could make up extra time later and hold it over her head. “you’re the first person to say that, thank you.” he says with a small smirk shaking his head. “when she finally picks up the sandwich he looks at it and then at her. “sure, once you’ve taken a bite.” he leans back in his chair with his own sandwich digging in and realizing that he was definitely hungry and his body had been right all along. he knows it’s probably why he had such a bloody headache. “i figured we’d be here all night might as well settle in and get comfortable.” frank had no plans of going home, actually.
ludo-champman:
A bludger for @frvnklongbttoms Where: The Three Broomsticks
“Alright, that’s enough,” Ludovic was supposed to avoid getting hit in the face just long enough to allow everything to heal properly, but had never been able to see violence and stay still. Even in Hogwarts, he used to break people apart, and if that had sometimes gotten him into trouble, he felt better knowing that he didn’t allow a situation to escalate. One arm wrapped around Frank’s shoulders, he looked at the opponent with a mean look on his face. Don’t you fucking try, he seemed to say, his wand sitting comfortably against his palm. Ludo was ready to unleash a binding spell if neither of them chose to behave. “Isn’t there enough shit going on out there? We really have to do this?!” The patronizing tone wasn’t too surprising coming from a team captain, was it?
it had started off rough, they had been taking a break from the hospital when visiting gray, and they meant to come here to eat and blow off some steam but one thing lead to the next, he had overhead a conversation and saying a certain slur that made the hair stand up on the back of his neck and before he could get himself to calm down he was already throwing the first punch before the other guy had punched back. maybe it didn’t look good on the auror, but then again, when it came to matters of muggleborns he wasn’t exactly going to back down either knowing that currently there were several missing or dead and he was getting tired of not being able to tell the families anything. it had been a rollercoaster of a couple days and frank had finally snapped. “get off me.” he says to ludo, moving past him and walking out the door and grabbing his cigarettes out of his pockets. people like frank and ludo would never have to really deal with what others did and it pissed him off to know that they were essentially helpless.

her anger was waning and she didn’t like it one bit, but maybe it was the way he carefully moved her hair away – or maybe he wondered how close she had been to losing it, but the softness took over despite her own desire to stay angry. she never really could with him. “you should have –” scolding, eyes fierce as she pinned him with a glare, “i haven’t complained before - i won’t start now, you don’t have to bare the burden alone” she muttered, she knew what it was like to have long nights – to have days that sleeps was the farthest thing from her mind as she wondered all the ways she had failed - the weight of the jobs they had chosen was maddening, but she hate to see him so brittle. that was the thing about love - he was the first person besides her grand mum that made her believe that she was worthy of it. he had been the match that lit the darkness away and despite their undoing - love like that didn’t just simply vanish. no, it changes – it became that fondness that would stay tucked away in her heart because she had loved him – it was just a different kind of love now. “you’re always welcome –” a firmness in her tone as she gave him one last squeeze before letting go.
the smile that stretched her lips was genuine to say the least – proud she had gotten a laugh out of him, “cigarettes takes years off of ya’” she muttered, she was nagging – maybe old habits died hard, “there are much better coping mechanisms, try acid pops - not burning a hole through your gums is highly motivating” shrugging. she had a meeting to get too - or well, she was going to get herself to gringotts and follow the paper trail – “absolutely - the goblins can feel my wrath later” cheeky smile. “what did we have in mind? i was food – proper food, and maybe a cuppa - i missed mine this morning”
emmeline had been the first person that he had ever loved, and it was an epic one if he had a say in it. though it was built on a friendship that he hoped would last for years and years. he had planned to be involved in emme’s life as long as she let him. he watched as the slowly started to leave and he gave her another gentle squeeze. “i know you can never stay mad at me for too long, have you seen my face?” he teases her, he knew that it was just out of love and worry, they had never ever truly been mad at each other for anything. they had just gone different paths but somehow always ended up bumping into each other on this one. though he felt like he was seeing her less and less now, both had been working on high profile cases and sometimes he felt like he was slowly going to start losing it but being able to have a partner in alice was nice for a bit, even if she would have to go back to actually training again after this case was closed where they needed all hands on deck. “you either,” he says, giving her a genuine look now. it had been the reason why their relationship had started in the first place, two kids who felt abandoned by the people that should love them and making a home out of the other for shelter.
“we’re all dying anyway,” he says with a slight roll of the eye. he knew that he needed to quit but he didn’t see himself doing that anytime soon. “acid pops?” he snorts now, mentally making note of that. “we can do that.” he says, before quietly adding, “i think my last meal was lunch yesterday. i hadn’t gone home yet, i slept in my office.” by sleeping he woke up with his head on stacks of books and papers. no wonder the man had a constant creek in his neck. “i feel like you know the best places more than me, lead the way.” he follows out behind her, placing a hand on her shoulder to not lose her in the morning crowd of the ministry.

it hadn’t been an easy night, he had gotten on a bad call, hit with the expulso curse and then thrown into the wall, had he been alone he would be in st. mungos right now, thank merlin for the mediwix’s that quickly arrived on scene, gotten him as patched up as he would allow them before he scattered brained walked towards anywhere he could sit. he didn’t know if he had a concussion, there were parts of his face that were still bleeding, and he’s pretty sure his hand is either broken or severely sprained from the impact. he knows that he should in hindsight head to st. mungos but he had already been there twice this week and didn’t want to go again even if these injuries were far worse. by the time he gets there there’s a chorus of people whispering about frank and he says in passing, “i can hear you,” before pulling up to the bar and using his wand to grab a cold cup and pressing it to his face and closing his eyes. “i’ll order something in a minute, i just need a second.”

it was late, and they were at a pub, and if frank was being honest, he’d rather be anywhere else, but he didn’t know where anywhere else was at the moment. “mate,” he says, motioning for the bartender to come towards them, “it looks like you need a refill, yeah?”
trclawneys:
❝ is he down there already then ? or is this about where he belongs in the end ? ❞
“no, i wish he was,” his tone is cold and bitter, he wished that he could understood what his mum saw in him but he didn’t. “unfortunately he’s too protected by certain people.”

❝ a man of the law tangled up in these kind of things ? you’re an interesting sort ‘a fella ❞
“well, i’m off work now so i’m not necessarily man of the law,” he jokes, shaking his head. “i think i’ll let the other aurors handle this anyway,” he needed a break or he would snap. “saw you come in the other day. you doing alright, vanity?” he hadn’t asked why she had come in, other than he had saw her briefly in passing as he went out on a case.
hufflepuffkazimir:
“you should take an actual break. there are plenty of other aurors around that can take over. if you don’t take a break, you’ll end up hurting yourself and hurting a situation rather than help.”
“wise words,” he says with a gentle smile, putting the paperwork down and grabbing a cigarette and sticking it in his mouth. “i just want this case to be over with,” he says, leaning back and closing his eyes.
henrvkas:
she’d half been expecting this from the start : the second things started getting busy at the dmle and trainees started getting drafted in to help she’d be top of the list . alice just hadn’t quite expected that moment to hit so early . but she still threw herself into the work with a ferocity she normally had reserved just for duelling club and quidditch , both outlets that were behind her now . all in all it left the sudden arrival of food a bit of a start for alice even if she did manage not to jump . was it lunch time already ? probably well past it knowing her and frank . ❝ and i hardly got any use out of it too ! the world’s unfair ❞
he had smiled at that, rolling his eyes. both he and alice were competitive, and they were also driven, it’s what made them work well together, and he wouldn’t tell her that he actually really enjoyed her company. he couldn’t give her the pleasure of knowing that though. “most of my diet consists of cigarettes and coffee, but this is a high stake case i figured we might need a little bit more energy than that,” he says with a sigh, leaning back on the chair before he watched her work for a moment before poking her with his wand. “come on, eat with me.” he says, trying to look out for her because it seemed, that even back in his day, no one ever looked out for the trainees, just worked themselves to the bone until burn out and he didn’t want that to happen with her.
