Some tips for writing a character with actual Narcissistic Personality Disorder (these are based off my experience so it doesn't apply to everyone)
-insecurity is a huge thing in NPD, so being competitive in things they enjoy even if the thing itself isn't directly competitive (like drawing or acting) and not meeting their own expectations of being the best (even if they're praised by others) can make them angry, defensive or depressed
-a lot of people with NPD mask, staying humble even while having a big ego just to keep a good reputation (though some like having a negative reputation, being seen as evil or a villian, but it doesn't apply to all) so they'll pretend to be nice even if they view others as below them just to seem nice or to feel like a good person
-manipulation also tends to be pretty common, whether it's consciously or not, things like, guilt tripping when they don't get what they want, having a victim complex or lying about things for sympathy or to make themselves look better, sometimes it's on purpose, sometimes it's just an unconscious response that they don't even realize is actually manipulation
-god complex, savior complex, hero complex, sometimes they'll do something just to seem like a better person even if they don't actually care, like comforting someone even if they have no empathy or sympathy for the person or situation, to be the hero or savior to them and keep a good reputation of being a "nice person"
-an intense need for attention and needing to be seen how they want to be seen, like if a character thinks of themselves as cool, mysterious and intimidating, they'd get angry or annoyed if they're not viewed that way by others and will try to do more and act differently to be viewed in that way
-sometimes having very transactional relationships, keeping people around that they hate or dislike for whatever they can offer, like if another character is popular, they might hate them but they stick around to keep the popularity that comes with being around/friends with them
Why is no one talking about how having diagnosed ASPD or psychopathy (also a ‘lack of remorse’ also is a frequent determining factor on parole or sentencing, as if that’s fucking controllable) gets you worse sentencing, like longer prison time or lose parole or even death penalty over life according to some. Literally the most blatant ableism nobody talks about. All considered normal and valid and talked about casually. Occasionally, ive heard of non ableist psychiatrists refuse to diagnose people with aspd when they might get in trouble with the law in future because of a fear theyd get worse sentences or death because of this. Having a disorder about a lack of empathy and impulse control is somehow considered voluntary and making you more “evil” and deserving of suffering. Prison system is shit in general but this is a great example.
cluster b culture is finding out that there might be a name for what you're feeling and then you search it up and it's a bunch of results about how horrible you are
you ever just wanna say 'fuck it' and act like a complete caricature of the worst of your personality disorder even though you know it's gonna make you look like an asshole/annoying/etc. to perso/neurotypicals and make other people with the PD look 'bad', but you don't care anymore? like we are gonna be villainized by these people for the rest of time, why should we care to appease them anymore if they aren't ever gonna listen to us or our experiences anyway
warning: stereotypes of personality disorders, mentions of ableism, don't look if this might be triggering
persotypicals to pwASPD: "OMG A PSYCHOPATH!!!! CAN YOU BE MY DARK ROMANCE PARTNER???? wait wtf you're actually a fucking creep and a threat to society, you should be locked up"
persotypicals to pwNPD: "you're pure evil, I hope you fucking kill yourself, the only thing you deserve is pain and suffering"
persotypicals to pwBPD: "OMG YOUR SEVERE MENTAL DISORDER IS SO AESTHETIC!!!! I want a yandere partner!!!! sooo romanticizable"
persotypicals to pwHPD: "lmao who the fuck are you? I don't know anything about you so you're never ever ever going to be mentioned ever in the history of ever"
people who say this shit are all fucking assholes. we don't exist to make you feel better about yourself. if you sexualize and villainize severe mental disorders, you are not an ally. you don't get to cut out the symptoms that don't match your overly stereotyped, ableist view of us. in the rudest fucking way possible, stay the fuck away from any disabled individual until you sort out your severe ableism, and leave us and our community alone.
