Aegon ii Targaryen x ftm!Hightower!reader
Just have fun with this. Don’t think too much about the times and how Queer people were treated. This is an AU. Go with it. No dance AU. Aegon, Helaena and Aemond are Viserys and Aemma’s children.
Summary: after a run in with a wild dragon, Prince Aegon Targaryen is severely burned and internally damaged. But his husband, (y/n), stays at his side and their children come to see their papa for the first time since he was injured.
Warnings: talks of burn scars and injuries
The room was quiet save for Aegon’s unevened, wheezy breaths, and the soft sound of (y/n)’s voice. He was laid out beside Aegon in bed, book open, reading Aegon a story his mother had once read to him. A story of a boy, and giant, and-
“Magic beans?” Aegon asked, his voice raspy and broken, but still entirely him. “What- what makes them magic?”
“Have you not been listening, love?” (Y/n) asked with a soft laugh.
“I think-“ Aegon took a shallow breath in and turned his head just enough so he could look at his husband. “I think I… fell asleep.”
“That’s alright, love, I shall start the story,” (y/n) told his husband as he turned the book back to its first page.
“I might- I might fall asleep again,” Aegon murmured.
“Then I shall start the story over once more,” (y/n) told him honestly. Aegon forced a weak half smile and (y/n) leaned down to kiss the smile he loved so much.
“Mm,” Aegon hummed. (Y/n) pulled away and Aegon chased after his lips, only to be guided back down to his pillow by (y/n)’s gentle hands.
“If you wish for another, love, just ask,” (y/n) whispered. “You mustn’t strain yourself.”
“Can I… have another?” Aegon choked out.
“Of course,” (y/n) whispered. He kissed him again, soft and gentle, and they both melted into it like butter on toast. And when (y/n) pulled away, Aegon did not strain himself for another kiss, he stared up at him with eyes coloured like the ocean and smiled.
“Another?” (Y/n) repeated with soft laughter. “Greedy thing you are, Aegon.”
Aegon laughed at his jest. The sound was painful and broken and it dissolved into an ugly fit of coughs. (Y/n)’s eyes widened with worry and he reached over Aegon to grab the goblet of water.
“Calm, love, calm,” (y/n) whispered. He gently tilted Aegon’s head up and placed the goblet to his lips. Aegon took two big gulps before he pulled away. Some water slid down his chin and into the front of his night shirt.
“Better?” (Y/n) asked. “Would you like more?”
“No, thank you,” Aegon murmured. (Y/n) set the goblet aside and wiped the water off of his husbands chin with his thumb. Aegon smiled and caught his thumb with a kiss when it slid over his lips.
“Why so mushy today?” (Y/n) asked him quietly. Aegon sighed at the question, a deep sound that made his chest ache, and pressed another kiss to (y/n)’s thumb.
“A man cannot give his husband affection?” Aegon asked quietly.
“A man cannot be unusually affectionate while laying on what most people are calling his death bed,” (y/n) corrected gently.
“I… do not plan on leaving you a widower, (y/n),” Aegon whispered. “I am affectionate because I love you. And because- because of what you’ve done… for me. And because I do not think- I would have woken… if not for the memory of you.”
(Y/n) smiled, cheeks streaked with tears, and leaned down to give Aegon that kiss he had asked for earlier. When he pulled away, Aegon licked his lips and smiled.
“You taste like salt,” he murmured as he reached up with his good hand to wipe the tears off his husbands face.
Aegon clicked his tongue and gave his head a weak shake. “Do not be sorry, husband. Just… just continue reading. Pl-please.”
“Of course,” (y/n) agreed as he grabbed the book from up off the blanket. He opened it to page one and began to read once more.
“In the reign of the famous King Arthur, there lived near the Land’s End of England, in the country of Cornwall, a worthy farmer, who had an only son named-“
The chamber doors opened up and Aegon let out a frustrated groan.
“Who-“ Aegon coughed but held a gentle hand up towards his husband when he reached for the goblet. “Who… interrupts my story time?”
“It is just me, Aegon,” Aemma’s soft voice called out as she made her way over to his bedside with a tray in her hand. “I am sorry I interrupted your story. I just wished to bring you lunch.”
“Oh.. thank you, mother,” Aegon whispered. (Y/n) helped Aegon sit up and accepted the tray from Aemma with a bow of his head. A bowl of soup broth sat steaming on the tray, alongside little cubes of bread.
(Y/n) dropped a few cubes of bread into the soup and stirred them around before he spooned a small bite out of the bowl. Aegon’s lips parted and (y/n) gently slid the spoon into his mouth. He watched Aegon swallow the warm bite.
“Good?” (Y/n) asked softly.
(Y/n) took a bite for himself before he spooned another out for Aegon. A bread chunk rested in the spoon, soaked with the warm soup, and Aegon’s lips parted to accept it.
(Y/n) stirred the soup around aimlessly as Aegon chewed, his jaw working slowly at the bit of bread, like every bite was a challenge.
“Would you like more?” (Y/n) asked.
(Y/n) helped his husband eat, occasionally stealing a bite for himself, until the bow emptied. He ate the rest of the bread cubes when Aegon denied them, and handed the tray back to Aemma, who made room for it on the night stand.
“The children should be finished with their lessons shortly,” Aemma said softly as she glanced between (y/n) and Aegon. “Would you like them brought here? They’ve been asking about their father more and more.”
“Yes… bring them here,” Aegon whispered. “I have missed them.”
“Are you sure?” (Y/n) asked quietly. “Our boys are quite energetic and you cannot even speak without it hurting.”
“I wish… to see our children, my love,” Aegon told him softly. “Please, mother, fetch the children.”
“Of course, my boy,” Aemma murmured as she rose from her seat.
Aemma returned to the bedchamber with a babe tucked into the crook of her arm and two little boys at her side. Aegon was still seated upright and the sight of his family brought a genuine smile to his face.
“Papa!” Their eldest, Aerion, called happily as he hurried over to his father’s side of the bed. He reached up to haul himself onto the mattress but was stopped by his other father’s gentle hand.
“Papa is hurting, Rion, remember? Come around on my side,” he instructed quietly. Aerion nodded his head and moved to walk around the bed, grabbing onto his younger brother on the way.
“Papa boo boo?” Maegor, their middle child, asked as Aerion helped him up onto the big bed.
“Yes, my love, papa has a boo boo,” (y/n) answered softly as he took their youngest from Aemma. He placed a chaste kiss to the babes head and adjusted her swaddle.
“Kiss better?” Maegor asked as he crawled over to his father.
“I would love-“ Aegon was cut off by his own cough. It was loud and wheezy and made a soft frown tug at (y/n)’s lips. “Love a kiss better, son.”
Maegor’s little face split with a gleeful smile and Aegon turned his head towards his son. The little boy studied his father’s face, half smooth and pale, half now grotesque and red, but still entirely his papa. Maegor leaned down and pressed a kiss to the burnt side of his father’s face.
“Better, papa?” Maegor asked.
“Yes, little one, I feel much better,” Aegon told him. “Thank you.”
“I want a turn, papa!” Aerion shouted as he crawled over. He shoved his little brother away and tucked himself close to Aegon’s side.
“That- that was not very kind, Aerion,” Aegon whispered to his eldest. “Apologize to Maegor.”
“I just wanted a turn,” Aerion frowned.
“I… am aware, son, but shov-shoving is rude… you could have hurt Maegor. Apologize to him,” Aegon instructed.
Aerion sighed and turned to look at his brother, who had cuddled up their other papa’s lap, a deep pout on his face.
“I am sorry, Maegor, it was rude to shove you,” Aerion told his brother.
“Hurt my feelings,” Maegor whimpered.
“I am sorry that I hurt your feelings,” Aerion said.
“Hug.” Maegor pouted as he held his arms out to his older brother. Aerion smiled softly and brought the boy into his embrace.
“That’s- that’s good,” Aegon whispered. “Good. I-I hate when you boys argue.”
“Sorry, papa,” Aerion frowned. His arms were still wrapped tightly around his little brother.
“It’s alright, son,” Aegon assured him. “You apologized and-and you won’t do it again, will you?”
“No, papa,” Aerion told him. Aegon smiled softly and gently tapped the side of his face. Aerion’s eyes lit up and he leaned forward to kiss his father’s burn scars, just as Maegor had.
“Now I… now I feel extra better,” Aegon murmured to his sons. “Thank you, both.”
“Welcome, papa,” Maegor grinned. He turned to his other father, who was rocking his baby sister, and pointed from him to Aegon as he spoke.
“Papa give other papa kiss better!”
(Y/n) laughed softly and reached forward to gently stroke the top of the boys head. “I have given papa many kisses to make him better, my love, trust me.”
“Baby Nyra give papa kiss better?” Maegor asked.
“Baby Nyra would love to give papa a kiss better,” (y/n) told his son with a soft laugh. He adjusted the babe in his arms and squished her little face into Aegon’s.
“Well, now I am sure I will return to full health in-in no time,” Aegon told his family. “Thank you all.”
“Welcome, papa,” Aerion whispered as he grasped his father’s hand. “Love you.”
“I love you, too. All of you.”
