Bottle rocket under ice
I’m pretty sure that the reason the ice fractured into six slices is the same reason snowflakes are often six sided and it has to do with the shape of a molecule of water and I just think that’s so freaking cool.
How would it even stay lit though?
!!!!! it IS actually because of the structure of water molecules! Water molecules are fuckin weird, as are lots of other liquid substance molecules, because theyre shaped like fuckin HEXAGONS! hexagons are those weird, six-sided shapes that re very sturdy, but they dont tend to sit very well when stacked together. thats why, when you fill up a glass of water to its full capacity, it can go OVER the brim a little and not spill over. It’s also why water beads.
anyway, so since water is essentially made up of a gazillion little hexagons, it tends to gather into larger hexagons as it shapes together. this is not visible unless the water is in a solid form, aka ice. when the water is split, it tends to crack around the established hexagons. that bottle rocket exploded in the PERFECT place to show this phenomenon and its geeking me out.
ALSO! the bottle rocket stays lit because the fuse was definitely waterproof and made with magnesium and an oxidizer of some sort. this means that they will burn underwater because they dont need the oxygen from the air to stay lit. thats so fucking weird isnt it. im tipsy and its the 4th of july. sorry for the science haha
Don’t you dare apologize for science
Reblogging for science, explosions, and cool hexagons!

We lost a vital part of this site when people stopped making “fuckyeah_____” fan blogs
Remember when someone on tumblr would post a rhetorical question like “I wonder why all us neurodivergent people love the rain so much” and someone would make up some garbage like “well you see rain carries negative particles (which is why you get depressed if you drink rainwater) and since neurodivergent people are depressed the negative particles feel natural to them uwu” and everyone would be like “thanks science side of tumblr”
there are reasons for this, actually!
tumblr is set up as what is scientifically referred to as a "factual state" - meaning, in short, that our brains perceive the majority of what we read on it as factual. (source) this is why there are so little colour schemes on it and why dark mode/low colour mode took so long to be implemented, as tumblr didn't want to mess this up. here's a list of colours which help to enhance that mindset and manipulate people into thinking that what they are reading is true - you'll see that almost all of the previous shades of blue used on tumblr are there.
but why is this a thing? studies have actually shown that tumblr aims to push information on us that will, actually, assist governments.
yeah. it's scary. that's also why tumblr was sold for such a low amount - because if it fit these specifications, it would have to be listed here; a site, for those of you that don't want to click the link, that lists all well known social medias that cannot legally be used to spread propaganda. which is also why facebook is up in arms about that whole political advertising shitstorm.
tumblr is generally advertised as the "shitty blogging website with bad staff" because they want to cover this with incompetence, or an impression of it - studies show that our brains are not able to link sinister means with a feeling of utter uselessness.
tumblr's users are often also struggling with mental health issues - it is thought that up to 68% of users may be depressed and therefore, easier to target with this information.
tl;dr is that you absolutely should not trust half the shit you see on tumblr, because unfortunately, up to 13% of blogs are only created to spread false information for a larger purpose.
additional sources:
a list of blogs confirmed to be spreading false and possibly harmful information
a list of topics that are usually filled with false information in posts
extra information on what governments are the worse for this and why
and, finally, what you can do to keep yourself safe from this
Ok first of all I applaud your dedication to this and second of all I read every source and I encourage all my followers to do so as well thanks science side of tumblr

Science side of tumblr pls explain
It’s called a Laminar Flow. Water usually has a lot of turbulence in it, and that is that causes it to look rather chaotic when it’s spraying out of a hose.
Laminar Flow occurs when all the water is moving in the exact same direction, eliminating turbulence, and thus, creating a flow of water that looks like glass.
Still, the idea that this is creating Laminar flow randomly is quite incredible, usually it requires specially built nozzles to create it.
science side of tumblr coming back at us with hard facts and incredibly unexpected urls
Nope.
when your teacher is trying to teach you how to cast fireball
+3 to Intellect
If anybody’s wondering what’s happening here, this clip made it onto Outrageous Acts of Science, and they explained that this teacher was demonstrating the Leidenfrost effect, which is basically when you place a droplet of a liquid on a surface that’s far hotter than its boiling point. The part of the drop touching the hot surface turns into vapor and forms a cushion that the rest of the drop rests on top of, which causes it to skid across the floor so quickly. The substance the teacher uses in the video is liquid methane. But methane has a really low boiling point. Like, about −160 °C low. So once it touches the comparatively hot floor, the Leidenfrost effect comes into play, and it slides across the floor. The issue is though, methane is colorless, so you can’t normally see it. Thankfully (in this demonstration), methane is also very flammable, so he sets it on fire before dumping it onto the floor so you can see it as it moves. Definitely a cooler demonstration of the Leidenfrost effect than dropping a little water in a hot pan. Or hotter, if you like puns.
THANKS FOR EXPLANATION SCIENTIFIC SIDE OF TUMBLR
Science side of Tumblr: how can dragons breathe fire?
There are three variants of dragons. One of them possesses a gland that produces a liquid, which spontaneously combusts when coming into contact with oxygen. Some phosphorus compounds could do that for example. The second one possesses two glands instead, which produce so-called hypergolic propellants, fluids that ignite when they come into contact with one another. The third kind stores the methane bacteria in their stomach produce, and expells it when breathing fire. In their mouth there’s a piezoelectric crystal, which is a substance that produces a spark when placed under mechanical stress and could thus serve to ignite the methane gas. Or it’s magic.

So you know how like mosquitos are evil? Mosquitos always attack me but not other people, because , you know, mosquitos are evil. Maybe science side of Tumblr can explain the reason that like mosquitos are, you know, evil.
Let the science side of Tumblr teach you a thing.
