This is a sideblog where I'll post all the endless brainrot and thoughtdumps and generally all good things that come from experiencing a start of a deep, deep obsession with Star Trek. Obviously I've had this on a near-permanent loop since first seeing it (taking into account the fact that I went to the theatre yesterday afternoon), but I just want to say two things about it.

Back in the mid-90s, I was on a Blake's 7 mailing list, where we discussed in detail the pros and cons of putting fanfiction online rather than producing zines. The best story to emerge from this period was a retelling of Italo Calvino's If on a winter's night a traveller... The fanfic told the story of a B7 fan trying to track down a story they started reading but never quite got to finish. In one chapter they meet another fan who, because they can't carry all their favourite zines around with them, instead carries around a piece of paper containing all the most important words from their favourite fics, so that the experience of reading those fics can be triggered at any time. The words are things like "sigh", "wound", and "tourniquet". This is how I feel watching this video, like I'm getting a direct hit of all that matters to me about DS9, straight into what's left of my brain.*

We get to see all - 6, is it? - of the outfits that Garak wears in ItPM. Truly our boy is having the time of his life. I particularly like the parody of the Starfleet uniform.

*In the spirit of the original fic, I shall now use the tag "tourniquet" as a shorthand for when I'm talking about this kind of thing, as indeed I say the word "tourniquet" unprompted in everyday life when I'm talking about this kind of thing. Which, on reflection, might be a bit odd.

Controversial opinion but I think Picard would actually like Garak. Trust him? Of course not. But I think he'd recognize the courage it takes to stand apart in a conformist society and greatly admire that. And inversely, I think Garak would quietly respect Picard because, despite being Mr. Starfleet personified, he's a mere human who couldn't be broken through Cardassian military torture techniques.

Best friends? No. Mutual nods of respect while passing in hallways? Yes.

i understand why in the fantasy genre they refer to english as "common tongue" or whatever the fuck. because often it's in a world that doesn't have our countries and they don't wanna imply england exists. but in sci fi i don't get dancing around it

like, i have no sweet clue why star trek would refer to english as "standard". england has existed. england exists. [points at julian bashir and malcolm reed] see? proof. just say english

I have no idea whether that's true but it is the only way this makes sense to me - like, it makes sense that when people from several different planets start using it as their common language, that version of that language becomes a separate branch that over time begins to gather more and more things that differentiate it from the version being spoken in actual 24th century England. Like, maybe in the beginning it would be called 'standard English' - as in, the version of English that is used as the standard language between multiple planets - but as time goes on, it would make sense for people - especially people who are not from Earth - to start referring to it as just 'standard', because to them standard is the base language and English is its localised version

Garak was late to lunch that day because he was building a bomb to destroy his shop. He was eating Delavian chocolates while he made it. He saw an assassin and knew for whom the bell tolled, but he still ate his chocolates, and he still went to lunch, just a little late. Because he was making a bomb to blow himself up with.

I’m reblogging my own post again because I just remembered that Garak WASN’T HUNGRY. He went to lunch but he didn’t eat anything, because he filled up on chocolates while making his bomb. He also risked his life to go to lunch. There was an assassin loose on the Promenade and he wasn’t hungry. You know every second counted because he blew himself up the exact instant that he walked into his shop. He literally only went to lunch at all so that he could tell Julian how much he hated Julius Caesar.

I…. I can’t get this out of my head. I think I have to write a fic about it.

Genuinely one of my favorite things about TNG is how often they're just doing art for fun. Riker's been playing trombone since he was a kid and he really enjoys it and also he is Not Good. Dr. Crusher is stalking the halls trying to rope all her friends and acquaintances into joining her community theater productions and musical reviews even if they've never been on stage before. They're constantly going to their crewmates' music recitals and poetry readings, and some of these people are impressively good at what they do but some of them are just getting started or content to stay at beginner level. They're having fun! They don't have to be prodigies in order to be involved with art because engaging with art on whatever level has value of its own! THIS is what I want to see in my post-scarcity socialist space future. Will Riker's bad trombone playing is load-bearing, actually.
