herobrine is so. i think about him often. take my hand, for a little moment, if you will. put yourself in his place.
you happen to simply exist in different worlds and places. you're not sure you have adequate control of when or where you appear — sometimes you just wake up in a different place, with a sense of being lost.
and sometimes, you see another entity. it has happened many times by now. something that looks like you. you observe it from afar; you have a vague sense of how much it can see, and you stand at the edge of the fog. you do not wish to be a bother.
sometimes you see it cut down trees, sometimes towering up to get the last remaining logs through the leaves. sometimes you see it go deep underground, and make its way through entire mountains. you do not quite understand why it does this, but you think it's gathering, something, because sometimes you see it make, depending on the other like-you, either small or grand structures; oftentimes something in between, all made of the materious you're pretty sure it gets from the adventures you watch it go on.
you dig little tunnels to imitate it. you're still not entirely sure why it does this, but you have a few cool rocks now. sometimes you build little structures to imitate it. it's kind of fun, actually, to create little things. your favorite structure to create is a small pyramid of sand. sometimes you build other things; but you have decided you really like those, and so you keep making them. other times, you clear the canopies of their leaves. you've noticed the leaves sometimes bother the other like-you, and you want to help out. usually, the other like-you is scared of the leafless forest and runs away. you do not know why.
sometimes, you see it build giant redstone contraptions that you could never wrap your head around; you wonder how it knows this. sometimes you see it shape the world as if it created it all in the first place; you see it manipulate it to make games and experiences made to be repeated. sometimes you see it with many other like-yous; all of them different, doing their own things. sometimes, you see it effortlessly make its way through the world like it knows everything about it, construct a portal to another realm with a single bucket, and suddenly your hear a sound. it's the portal to the end being opened. you watch the player go through. you do not follow. you know how this ends. you've heard the dying cry of your friend many times before. it rings throughout the whole world.
and sometimes, it notices you. sometimes it pulls a sword out and goes chasing after you in attempt to kill you, you think. you do not know why, and you run away. other times, it runs away as soon as it sees you; maybe it even just vanishes into nowehere. you do not know how it does this. you think it's because it's scared of you. you do not know why it is scared of you; you have never tried to hurt it. sometimes, it just stands there and stares at you. sometimes when it stares back at you, it crouches a few times. you cannot tell why. you think it might be observing you the same way you are observing it. after all, it does not see you often.
fewer times does it place a little sign with a message. when it does this, it is usually short: "hi" and "go away" are the most common. even fewer times, is a gift left with a slightly longer message: "hi herobrine! want to be friends?". you do not know what "friends" means, but you think it sounds nice. you tend to stick around those like-yous more. they leave you little gifts. some of them even put a little extra bed in their house for you. if they have a cat, sometimes you give their cat little things to give them. you take care of their pets and items when they stop showing up. you make sure to harvest their wheat and carrots and fill their chests with food for when they come back. they must be on a long adventure, out there, somewhere.
you miss some of them, and wonder how they're doing.
maybe that is what "friends" means, now that you think about it.
