a new solo-journaling game about being small, hopeful, and belonging to something

'it is a beautiful day on the marae and you are a baby pūkeko' is a game where the title says it all, really!

play as a baby pūkeko on your marae (Māori meeting house) as a group of guests comes to your home. you'll play through a pōwhiri, which is a formal Māori process where guests are welcomed on. you'll talk to some old friends, make some new ones, and help the pōwhiri run smoothly.

you'll need some dice (d4, d6, d8, d10) and a way to record your story.

no prior knowledge of Māori culture or language is needed. most words have a translation, and there's a provided dictionary link for the ones that aren't.

it's so interesting that both jake and rachel think of her old self through the activities that engage her (studying, shopping, gymnastics)...all of which demand patience, carefulness, and deliberation. to inhabit her role as warrior she has to largely stifle those qualities associated with discipline, and instead emphasize her wild instincts. it becomes a kind of liberation but also a kind of cage. there's a weird indefinable sense of ghostly, claustrophobic untimeliness in the way she narrates herself, like she's somehow outgrown her own life even while she's in the process of living it: she doesn't feel at home in her life, and sees it as somehow separate from herself. her hobbies represent a gendered sense of normality to her that feels increasingly out of reach even when she's participating in them, because they are so different from what the war demands of her. she starts her introductions like "you would think i am normal. but you're wrong because i'm not, not anymore anyway," positioning the idea of a normal human girl as something that she cannot return to, something she cannot fully discipline herself into, but also as something she wants to keep wanting to be. i'm really interested in what difference there is between being human and feeling human for her--this kind of struggle is mostly discussed in relation to tobias, but it's also so important for her. what both establishes and compromises her humanity is the way she doesn't feel emotions the way others do: she feels too much, or not in the right way.

jake isn't defined so much by his interests in basketball and video games as rachel is by her activities, but i do find it fascinating that despite his clear mediocrity at games, he knows enough about them to know that war is not a game. and yet his participation in the war forces him to cultivate qualities that are necessary in games (alertness to the opponent's moves, ability to maneuver and adjust on the fly). but by the end of the war he has pretty much lost all interest in basketball (which was always linked to tom in his mind anyway). applegrant really said what if you were your own ghost who haunts your life
