WEEK 13
There’s so much room for improvement in television and film when it comes to their current representations of the LGBT community. But what I most want is for filmmakers and showrunners to not kill off lesbians and bisexual women, which is not that hard not to do. News flash: killing off one of the few queer characters on your show does not suddenly make your show good. Killing off a valuable queer character that means so much to so many people for shock value alone also does not make your show good! I may be indirectly talking about Jason Rothenberg killing off Lexa on The 100, but I truly mean it towards all films and TV shows that have killed off a queer woman. There’s such a small amount of queer women in the media and killing them off isn’t making anything better for anyone, except maybe homophobes. That’s not to say your film or show has to be all rainbows and sunshine. It means, fine, she doesn’t get a happy ending. And fine, she has to leave the show. But just, don’t kill her off.
Additionally, I want more queer women of color in the future, because lesbians and bisexual women of color deserve more representation. There’s so little representation as it is, and even less for women of color. Therefore, the following images and gifs will derive only from films and TV shows that 1) did not kill off their queer women and 2) represented queer women of color! in a positive, non-stereotypical light! Wild concept right? But they did it and I love every single one of these films and shows for it.
* I’d also specifically love some Mexican queer women representation because there’s literally, like, nothing. But apparently that’s asking for too much so I’m happy just seeing myself in queer women of color in general!
