Metric - “Monster Hospital”
Today I find myself on a Metric kick. I haven’t listened to them in ages, but they are a Canadian indie rock and synth pop band that have been kicking around since 1998.
Granted, this song is an older one (from 2005) but it has always been a personal favourite. Here’s to more music and success, as well as to more listeners for a Canadian band with true longevity!

Lmao this American girl walked up to a Hungry Jacks (Burger King) register with her drink and really, really loudly (I was at the other side of the place) proclaimed: “I asked for Lemonade, you gave me Sprite” in a really bitchy, entitled voice.
The cashier (and everyone within earshot) just looked at her like “the fuck is wrong with you”
In Australia, Sprite IS lemonade as far as we’re concerned.

Yeah this is correct. Lemonade is sprite. Clear fizzy liquid type thing. Solo is closer to what American lemonade is but we don’t actually have what you guys consider lemonade anyway so she was never going to get what she wanted lmao.

I’m pretty sure the same is true in the UK at least was in 2010 except Sprite didn’t seem to be a common brand so I’d ask for Sprite get blank looks eventually figured out to ask for lemonade
Sprite is a recognised brand here, but it’s not omnipresent, it is also considered a brand of lemonade.

At least in the UK, if you order lemonade you’ll sometimes get Sprite, but if it’s proper it’s a lemon soda akin to the Italian gassosa - less sweet than Sprite.

I just want to say that the whole ‘lemonade and Sprite are interchangeable’ is pretty common throughout Asia as well, in my experience

You guys have orange juice at least, right? Grapefruit juice? In the US, Lemonade is a juice, like orange juice, but made with lemons instead of oranges. You can buy “fresh squeezed lemonade” at many restaurants and fast food venues. Typically it’s diluted a bit with sugar water, so the sour flavor of the raw lemon juice isn’t so overpowering.
In the south, it’s very common for people buy whole lemons and make their own lemonade at home using a citrus juicer.
In Germany, you’d ask for “Limonade” and yeah, you may get a Sprite or a Fanta; it’ll always be a fizzy nonalcoholic drink and usually come in lemon, lime, orange flavor. Only in healthfood or hipster establishments would it ever be an actual juice drink.
As a fan of homemade rosewater lemonade, I am twitching at the thought of sickly sweet carbonated beverages that taste like they were invented by someone who may have been in the same room as a citrus fruit once but can’t remember what it actually tastes like being called lemonade.

This is so epically disturbing. Lemonade is such an integral part of spring and summertime. I just … this breaks my brain and my heart. The cultural references too. Just, all the American shows that reference lemonade and people in other countries are thinking Sprite? There’s a reason kids do freshly squeezed lemonade stands. You can’t buy it like that from a store. And there’s nothing quite like screwing it up and getting the sugar ratio wrong. And parents grinning through the too sour or too sweet mess and praising your efforts. Lemonade Is a Thing.

Yes, Australians make Shandies with our carbonated soft drink lemonade, though if you’re using it as a mixer, you’re less likely to be using Sprite and more likely to be using Schweppes, which looks like this:
Like. We absolutely have a concept of flat, juice-based lemonade, but as an earlier commenter said, it’s a niche hipster speciality rather than the default, and even then, it’s still going to be premade rather than fresh.

limeade can be either soda or juice based it really depends; my experience it’s more soda, but that could be a regional thing.
cherry- and orangeade aren’t really a thing as such; they’d be called juice at that point, or “juice drink” (like hi-c, capri sun) if the fruit juice % was too low to actually be considered fruit juice

It’s not the whole Commonwealth. As happens about fifty percent of the time, Canadians sided with the U.S. and our lemonade is the same as the American type.
It’s like elderberry juice really.
Here in Canada, we call that “gin.”
Canadian here: y'all are Missing Out on some fancy ass lemonades. We go to the farmer’s market every weekend and there are at least two lemonade stalls that sell your basic lemonade but also have fancy varieties depending on market events and what’s currently in season. You’ll find cherry lemonade, raspberry lemonade, lemonade with cucumber and mint, rhubarb lemonade, elderberry lemonade, lavender lemonade and last week at their herbfest event one of the stands was selling lemonade with sweet basil that I did not try in favour of some refreshing classic lemonade.
The difference between things like limeade or cherryade or whatever the fuck orangeade is and lemonade with added limes, cherries or any other fruit is that the additional fruit doesn’t overpower the lemon aspect and the drink is written as “lemonade with (additional flavourings)” or “(additional flavourings) lemonade” rather than just tacking “ade” on to the end of a different fruit name.
We actually DO have carbonated lemonade here! But it isn’t sprite, it’s literally sour ass lemonade that has been carbonated, the more sour, the better! If y'all consider sprite to be lemonade, you have my deepest condolences for how weak and flavourless your lives have to have been up until this point. The good news is that google exists and recipes for real lemonade are just a search query away! Godspeed!
Actually you know what, I thought I was done but I guess I’m not?
This is sparkling lemonade. It is carbonated, but unlike sprite it is overpoweringly flavourful and sour. PC also makes a knock off sprite, but instead of incorrectly labelling it as a lemonade, it is labelled ‘spritz up’ and tastes as boring as it sounds. Both sparkling lemonade and spritz up also come in 2 litre bottles.
Like this! An hour ago I would have just assumed that everyone has 2L bottles but an hour ago I also assumed that lemonade was universally understood to be lemons + water + sugar at its core, so if you’re wondering why you’d want a bottle the length of your forearm and twice as wide (ymmv on that i guess), the answer is that these are good for mixing drinks without ending up with a million empty cans. They are also perfect for up-ending into a punch bowl with frozen fruit and some peach juice or something at events where you wanna give kids something nice to drink that doesn’t have alcohol in it (or, don’t invite kids and pour a mickey of rum or vodka directly into the bowl, too).
PC also sells non-carbonated lemonade in cans for convenience but it’s like…middle of the road emergency lemonade for when you can’t feasibly bring a carton of real stuff somewhere but don’t want sparkling lemonade.
See these? These are a staple at Canadian fairgrounds. I live in a farming town and our annual fairs generally have 3 or 4 of these bad boys dispersed over the fair grounds. They’re not amazing–they’re absolutely overpriced carnival food quality lemonade, but they make it by hand for you while you watch and toss half of the lemon they juiced to make it into your cup, and when you’re done drinking you can pull it out and eat whatever lemon guts are left after they’ve been soaking in icy sugar water and it is 👌 if you don’t mind getting your hands a bit sticky. Again, they’re not amazing but there’s a definite nostalgia factor for them if you had one made for you at a fair when you were young and continue to buy them as an adult.
Lastly, you can probably grab one of these on amazon or at a houseware store and just make your own lemonade? Tip: if you make a shit ton of lemonade for an outdoor event on a hot day, slice up extra lemons the night before and freeze them and then toss them into the lemonade instead of or alongside ice to keep I’ve from diluting the lemonade too much in the heat.
Anyhow, until this moment I had no idea how passionate I apparently am about lemonade. Hope this clears some things up and also maybe convinces some of you non North Americans to make your own real lemonade, a drink that has definitely been around longer than sprite has even existed. Canada has won its second Gold Medal of the Rio Olympics.
Canada’s Flagbearer, Rosie Maclennan has won a gold medal in Trampoline. She previously won the gold medal in this event in the London Olympics 4 years ago.
