↪ Happy birthday, Kagura! ❤
we cannot ever resolve the problem of violence against children in our society unless we give up the idea that the worst thing a child can be is disobedient.
this is what so many people are failing to understand when they whine about how youth rights advocates should stop concerning ourselves with silly little things and just worry when there’s “real abuse” happening. the two causes are one and the same. perpetuating the idea that children are morally obligated to be submissive primes them for abuse. perpetuating the idea that parents must be dominant in order to be fulfilling their responsibilities encourages them to be abusive.
stop praising kids for submissiveness. stop remarking on how “good” they are when they don’t argue or complain. stop equating “respect” with obedience. stop calling a child “well-behaved” when what you really mean is that they’re being silent and taking up as little space as possible.
instead, praise kids for goodness and moral strength that come from within. recognize them for acts of kindness and selflessness. show pride in them for helping others. encourage them when they take responsibility. support them when they stand up for themselves.
stop praising parents for dominance. stop expressing wonder at their ability to keep their children on a short leash, to silence them with a word, or to strike fear into their hearts with a look. stop looking impressed when parents gleefully expound on all the ways they’ve been “tough” on their kids.
instead, praise parents for cultivating good human relationships with their kids. tell them how great it is to see them make their kids smile. recognize them for respecting their kids, for talking to them like people. encourage them to spend time just hanging out with their kids, in moments that aren’t about teaching or correcting or giving orders. recognize the courage it takes for them to admit when they’re wrong. support them when other adults cast judgmental eyes because they’re not being disciplinarians.
making things better starts with how we talk to each other.

“Kotarou, what do you think is the most important quality a general needs to lead an army? Whether he’s a warrior who can defeat a thousand foes or a wise strategist who knows how to use his soldiers, if the general goes down, the battle is lost. If you die, you can’t protect your soldiers, your country, or anything else. Thus, a general must be the greatest coward on the battlefield. So Kotarou, feel free to cry. You can cry. You can be weak. As long as the general lives, as long as you live, the Katsura clan will not die. It’s okay if they call you a coward. Survive Kotarou.
KEEP YOUR CATS INSIDE.
it’s no longer acceptable to pretend like you haven’t seen the various studies on why it’s not only harmful to your cat to live outside, but to many native animals. keep your cat inside, or leave it outside and know that you are leaving your cat vulnerable to attacks, disease, car strikes and more, and that your cat is killing off vulnerable native animals.
the whole “fiction doesn’t affect reality” argument is actually kinda racist…
people talk about like how finding nemo and jaws are great examples but nobody ever talks about how fiction has shaped our perceptions of different racial and ethnic groups like do you think the media has no hand in why alot of ignorant white people think africa is a desertland and not a continent of different countries, full of rich and diverse cultures, beautiful buildings and riches? or why they think asia is only japan, korea and china? when asia is also india, bhutan, the Philippines, nepal, etc? do you think that media and fiction hasnt allowed whites to view black people as ignorant and lazy thru cartoons and minstrel shows? like if you really think what youre seeing on tv doesnt affect reality and how people think then like. you must be fuckin stupid.
there are several studies which prove this by the way. like how black children (and white girls) self esteem is negatively impacted by media.
studies show our perception about asian americans, and their perceptions of themselves are impacted by media.
there are harmful psychological effects on native americans thanks to sports mascots.
stereotypes of latino/latina/latines in media have - you guessed it - harmful effects - including political ones
how about how inaccurate race and poverty images in the news effect our views on welfare?
positive images of disability effect disabled people positively, where as negative images effect them negatively
the availability of GLB roles on TV positively impacts the gay community
and i honestly i could go on and on and on and on
i know i know water is wet, all these studies to tell you what common sense could. but like … there is very real research out there that shows fiction has a very real harmful impact on minority communities. and that positive representation has a positive effect on these communities.
so no. fiction is never just fiction. and frankly people who think fiction is just fiction can fuck off.
Wait this version is better.
