Tarika Wilson was shot to death while holding her 1 year old baby in her arms. Officers broke into the home looking for her boyfriend. Within moments, one officer made his way partially up the stairs before firing on Tarika who, according to autopsy reports, was leaning forward in surrender or trying to place her baby down in a safer place. The fatal shot was to the neck (as indicated by the symbol.) Her baby was also shot multiple times, but survived the attack. Read more.

We have so much more work to do (namely in Black respectability.) Ya’ll keep (or start) loving out there. Love every bit of Black in you and your communities. This includes the intra-community interactions, the rejection of white standards, your twerking, your vigor, your fight, your peace, your heart dropping breakbeats, your magic, your skin, kinks, and West African gap, your ancestral memory, your queerdom, your femme power, your womanism, your pride, your humanity, your humility. Honor ALL parts of your Blackness. And fight for it.

Yvette Smith, cancer survivor, was shot to death in her home after answering the door for officers. Officers were responding to a domestic disturbance call. After shooting her in the abdomen (indicated by the symbol below her image), officers issued a statement that she came to the door with a weapon. No weapon was recovered. Tamir Rice was shot and killed days after the announcement that Mike Brown's killer would not face charges. Tamir was at a park, alone, pacing around with a toy gun, making snowballs, and sitting beneath a gazebo, when officers rushed in, patrol car dangerously close to Tamir, and immediately hopped out and shot him twice below the chest (as indicated by the symbol below his image.) Officers were responding to a call that a boy had a gun that "might be fake." They left Tamir wounded for nearly 4 minutes without administering first aid, See the video and a more complete story.
We know the story. Michael Brown was walking in the street of his neighborhood, almost home when he was harassed by officer Darren Wilson and ordered to get out of the street. After the officer initiated an altercation from his SUV, Mike Brown struggled away and began to run away in fear. His body was riddled with bullets as he ran, then tried to surrender with his hands in the air. The surrender did not save him. Police left him dead and uncovered in the middle of the street for hours, bleeding out for everyone to see. We are still awaiting the officer's indictment. Read here for an update on the case.
Kathryn Johnston was in her home when it was broken into by Atlanta police. The police had gained a search warrant using a fake informant and stormed Kathryn's home. In response, the woman, fearing for her safety met the intruders with a revolver, failing to hit any of the officers. They opened fire, fatally wounding her, and injuring one another. The officers then proceeded to cover for their killing of an innocent elder, handcuffing her and leaving her to die while they planted marijuana in her basement to justify the raid. Read more here.
Duanna Johnson was brought into police custody on false charges of sex work. While in booking, she was verbally violated with transphobic slurs. When she refused to answer to anything but her name, one officer approached her, handcuffs over his fist like knuckle rings, and began hitting her repeatedly, while another officer held her down from behind. When Duanna finally defended herself, pushing him off, and again taking a seat, the same officer violently assaulted her again, complete with a top off of pepper spray to the face. Nurses rushed in to the aid of the officer & dismissed her completely. After the surveillance tape surfaced of the assault and gained media attention, Duanna was soon found dead, shot execution style (as indicated by the symbol on her forehead) and no arrests have been made. There are apparently no suspects or motives.
Tanesha Anderson suffered from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. A family member called officers and agreed to have her taken to a medical center for evaluation. when Tanesha became uncomfortable in the confined space of a squad car, police slammed her into the pavement and pressed their knees into her back until she lost consciousness. Tanesha laid there in stillness until EMT arrived and was pronounced dead in front of her family. For a more complete story, click here .
Aiyana Jones was sleeping on the couch as her grandmother lay with her. A Detroit SWAT team accompanied by the TV show, "First 48" tossed a flash grenade into the home, then kicked in the door. The lead officer rushed in and immediately fired the shot that hit 7 year old Aiyana Jones in the top of the head (marked by the symbol in the image). The bullet exited her neck. The authorities went on to lay blame on the grandmother, who's only instinct was to reach for her grandbaby, saying she'd prompted the officer to pull the trigger. The judge declared a mistrial in persecuting Aiyana's killer. Read the Huffington Post's latest coverage here
What Does Genocide Look Like?
Genocide looks like the systematic destruction of our communities. Genocide looks like the killing of our people. Genocide looks like misrepresentation. Genocide looks like invisibility of our humanity. Genocide looks like the disposability of Black bodies. Genocide looks like the peeling away of womanhood within Blackness. Genocide looks like the separation of queerness from Blackness. Genocide looks like the dismissal of Black trans lives. Genocide looks like pitting this Black against that Black. Genocide looks like forced division.
The United Nations defines genocide as "a crime of intentional destruction of a national, ethnic, racial and religious group, in whole or in part."
The definition expands to include "Killing members of the group, causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group, deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part, (and) forcibly transferring children of the group to another group."
To cover a larger base, (looking at the language of media & the folks who are allowed to patrol our streets), the following are also outlined as punishable: "Conspiracy to commit genocide, Direct and public incitement to commit genocide, Attempt to commit genocide, Complicity in genocide."
The United States is guilty of the crime of genocide against Black bodies. The state of Georgia is guilty. The city of Ferguson is guilty. The state of Florida is guilty. The city of Baltimore is guilty. The state of New Jersey is guilty. The list goes on for far too long.
