The government of Canada is expanding Medically Assisted Death to cull the poor and disabled, and now suicidal and mentally ill (these are usually interchangeable of course here). It is EUGENICS and every single disabled rights organization is against it.
Disability payments are $1,200 a month. The average one bedroom apartment rent in the Greater Toronto Area (greatest pop. area by far here) is $2,000 a month. People with mental illnesses are on months long waitlists to get even a single publicly funded session. Weeks to get privately funded care which costs at least $200 a session. There is no housing here for disabled people. We are in one of the worst housing crises in the world right now.
Doctors are now offering MAiD unprompted to young suicidal people. This woman is 21, a health practitioner literally suggested she kill herself.
This is one of the worst Disability Rights Violations we’ve ever seen in Canada. The government is killing us because it is cheaper than funding healthcare, cheaper than giving people housing and food and basic human rights.
Hey so I read the bill and the legal wording of the document and while mental illness definitely should not have been added to MAID, there are a number of other factors that are required in order to qualify. And those psychologists who suggest MAID to patients (provided this TikTok video is being honest which it most likely isn't given the nature of TikTok) automatically disqualify their patient from MAID by being an outside source. MAID is entirely up to the patient and it requires the patient's explicit consent.
Google is your friend, Snopes is your friend. This is upsetting news already, but be sure to read through everything first before you post something like this. It will save you a lot of heartache in the long run.
Yes it's up to the patient, but is the fact that it's being suggested by medical professionals not upsetting? This has happened several times now.
There was an article published about it a few months ago about a woman being suggested she apply for MAID because the government refuses to give out a livable disability payment so she's impoverished with no hope of a life worth living. (I'll link the article if I can find it again, but it was written several months ago so it's a bit to dig through)
Next year in March, it'll be easier for those with mental illness and disability to apply for MAiD than it is to apply for disability payments (source: me, I am in the process of applying for disability and I have looked at the application process for MAiD for shits and giggles because I'm fucking pissed that I'll be kept in poverty my entire life even if I do get disability payments).
This SHOULD be something that outrages people. The government is all too happy to provide the option of literally killing yourself rather than even attempt to give the disabled and mentally ill a fair shot at life. THAT is the thing we are furious about, not that MAiD exists. It's fine to exist, but the option of living should be far more accessible than the option of killing ourselves off.
