Synopsis: You and Robby spent seven long years together until the day it ended. Youâve done your best to create space; to become invisible. You canât miss what you donât see. Unfortunately, the universe (Gloria and the Board of Directors) seemed to have missed the memo.
i love scandal because what other show will have you saying that the presidentâs chief of staff pimped his husband out in an effort to out the religious and conservative vice presidentâs husband but it backfired and led to the disintegration of his marriage and the vice president murdering her husband in cold blood which he then had to help her cover up. the same chief of staff also put a hit out on his husband, a journalist, at one point because he was getting too close to going public about the conspiracy to rig the presidential election that got the current president in office, of which the chief of staff was naturally involved in. they just donât make tv shows like that anymore
summary. as the local weather woman, you shared an interesting rivalry with your hometown storm-chaser. while you always reported on the dangerous weather from a safe distance, tyler barreled into it head-first. but things change the night of the county fair when you find yourself in the middle of a storm rather than in the safely of a newsroom.Â
warnings. dramatic fluff, hurt/comfort, description of tornados, a curse word or two, description of injury, slightly inaccurate meteorological info.

a/n. hopping on the glen powell bandwagon bc he and daisy absolutely killed it in twisters!! feel free to send me requests for tyler, kate, and javi!
âIf you keep looking at him like that your face will get stuck in a scowl, which is really bad for television,â your friend said, leaning into your side. With a roll of your eyes, you managed to pull your attention away from the self-titled âtornado wranglerâ who had stirred up a fuss in the line for funnel cakes. People buzzed all around him as he signed shirts and took photos, never dropping his smile that you often dreamed about smacking right off of his face.Â
You had grown up alongside Tyler Owens, never as friends but as friends of friends. After you both split off for school to study meteorology, you returned to your hometown for very different reasons. Tyler started in the business of storm chasing, live streaming his adventures to people all across the internet who sensationalized the dangerous weather, and you scored a job as your hometownâs Weather Woman. Your job was to warn people about the threat of tornados while his was to drive head-on into them.Â
That was where you two drew your lines in the sand when it came to each other. He thought you were scared of taking risks while you thought his thrill-seeking was stupid and would eventually get him or one of his team members hurt. Those opinions on each other's job led to you two butting heads every time you encountered one another. His mere presence was enough to annoy you, especially at your favorite event of the summer, the fair.Â
âLook who it is,â Tylerâs voice sounded near you and your friend nudged your arm in the direction of it. You looked away from her just as he approached you, tipping his hat and flashing his teeth in a smile. âDidnât know they still let you out of the newsroom these days.âÂ
You crossed your arms over your chest, as the air of arrogance surrounding him nearly choked you out. âDonât you have a tornado to chase?â you asked, wanting to end the conversation before it fully started. Unfortunately, he never seemed put off by your jabs, but he was assumed by them.Â
âI took the night off,â he replied. âI wanted to see if there was anything worth my while here tonight.âÂ
You raised your brows. âOh really?â He nodded, smiling brightly at you. âFind anything yet?âÂ
âMaybe,â he shrugged. âItâd be easier if she answered my phone calls.âÂ
Tyler disliked you a whole lot less than you disliked him. After you graduated and he started storm chasing, he tried at every given opportunity to get you to join his team. Even years later he still tried to, no matter how many times you told him the risk he was putting himself and his team in every time they barreled into a storm cell. He was relentless but you were happy where you were at. You wanted to help people when it came to severe weather, not make the storm look enticing for internet audiences.Â
âI already told you, Iâm not interested.â Storm chasing was a dangerous game that you had no intention of playing. Being from the Midwest, you had lived through your share of tornados. Chasing them was not in apart of your career path.
His smile faded slightly before he seemed to snap back to himself. âAll Iâm saying is, we could use a mind like yours out in the field.â The compliment was nice, you could admit that to yourself, but it wouldnât win you over. He knew that too. âBut suit yourself.â And with that he walked off, meeting up with the rest of his team that joined him at the fair that night.Â
Your friend whistled lowly. âI donât know how you do it,â she said.Â
âDo what?âÂ
âSay no to a man like that.â You rolled your eyes once more as the line you were in moved. As she stepped forward to order, you threw a quick glance over your shoulder in the direction Tyler had walked off in. You saw him happily chatting with his team before glancing back at you for just a moment before you returned your gaze forward.
The rest of the evening passed in a blur of colorful lights, sticky heat, and enough fried food to make your stomach ache in the best possible way. Your friend left after a couple hours of roaming the prize barns and laughing at the kids screaming their heads off on the carnival rides, but you stuck around for a little longer, relishing in the sweet nostalgia the fair brought you.Â
Before you had taken a couple of well-deserved days of work, you and your team had predicted a storm front moving. Later that night was supposed to bring rainfall and a thunderstorm or two popping up around the county and neighboring areas. You thought youâd have plenty of time to roam the fair for a little longer until it hit, but you noticed the shift in the weather almost immediately. The sudden uptick in wind pricked the back of your neck as the distant rumble of thunder echoed above the fair chaos.Â
It was difficult to predict everything, that you had learned early on in your career. It also was hard to predict how quickly weather could change from bad to deadly. One moment youâre gazing up through the lights into the night sky, trying to gauge the incoming storm, and the next, the sirens are blaring across the fairgrounds.Â
The crowd of people running in every direction made the walkways hazardous. You were knocked into and jostled around as you tried to run toward the restrooms that doubled as storm shelters. They were clear at the opposite end of the walkway, but they were your closest option. You dodged and weaved through the swarms of people, trying to stay on your feet.Â
You only made it halfway to the shelter when you were stopped by the awful cries of a little girl who sat under the counter of one of the carnival games. She hugged her knees to her chest and called out for her mom, but no one who rushed by stopped. You didnât think twice before you sidestepped the fleeing crowd and crouched down in front of the little girl. The wind picked up significantly, blowing the cheap prizes right out of the booths and sending everything flying around and knocking into people.Â
âHey, sweetheart,â you raised your voice above the howl of wind and frantic people.Â
âMy mom!â she cried harder. âI lost her. I donât know where she is!âÂ
You glanced back up at the sky. The lightning strikes illuminated the massive, dark mass moving in quickly. âCome with me, and Iâll help you find her, okay?âÂ
The noise all around grew louder, frightening the little girl, along with yourself, but as you outstretched your hand, she took it, and you quickly pulled her to her feet before you both took off running. The speakers urged everyone to seek shelter immediately, but you watched as people raced in the opposite direction of the shelters, probably bee-lining to cars in an awful call. Theyâd never out race it.Â
âCharlotte!â Someone screamed and the little girl whipped her head around before she tugged hard on your hand. From behind you, the little girlâs mother appeared, immediately scooping up her daughter in her arms. âOh my, God. Thank you!â she said, looking at you with teary eyes.Â
âWe have to take cover,â you told her, gently pushing her forward. âThe shelterâs just up that way.â She thanked you again before she took off with her daughter in her arms. You wanted to follow, it was stupid not to when the wind gusts became more powerful, rattling everything dangerously and making it hard to think. But there were more people unsure of where to go and what to do. Groups of kids who had been dropped off for the evening stumbling frantically out of the rides and still dizzy. You stepped from the path and tried to direct people as best you could, shouting in tune with the speaker and the sirens for them to hurry into the shelter.Â
It wasnât until larger objects were plucked from the ground and tossed into the air like paper did you abandoned your aiding. The tornado screeched to life, ripping apart pieces of the show barns and rides with ease. You tried to close the distance between yourself and the shelter once more, but it wasnât people in need that stopped you, it was a sheet of metal pried from the side of one of the food trucks. You tried to dodge the hurling objects, but the sheet came at you hard and fast.Â
It sliced your shin, sending a wave of pain up through the rest of your leg. You stumbled, determined to stay upright, but the wind was too strong for your limping figure, and you toppled against the concrete, slamming your knees against the ground before you rolled over into the lousy shelter of a gameâs tent somehow still standing.Â
Panic started to set in as the storm raged around you, loud and monstrous. You covered your wound with your hands, unsure of where the blaring of the tornado ended and the fast-paced beat of your heart started, drumming in your ears and beating against your skull. You knew you couldnât stay there, but leaving was just as dangerous as every attraction of the fair swirled around in the air. The cut from your leg painted your hands red and throbbed; it would only slow you down if you tried to run, creating even more of a risk.Â
You didnât know what to do. All of your life, the storms you had faced youâd always been lucky enough to find shelter in plenty of time, from the cellar in your backyard to your high schoolâs basement created just for such an occasion.Â
Through the freight train sounding winds and your thundering heart, you heard a couple of voices that had to be close. Tearing your eyes away from the cut on your leg, you watched as another group of people sprinted down the walkway as someone yelled behind them to run.Â
In all of your life, youâd never been so relieved to see Tyler Owensâs face standing just a few feet away; he hadnât spotted you, and for a terrifying moment you thought heâd be unable to hear you yell out above the screaming storm. But somehow, he did. His head snapped in your direction, rain-coated and windblown, looking both out of sorts and in his element.Â
âWhat the hell are you doing?â he yelled as he ran over to you, dodging flying debris that grew larger by the minute. The second he crouched down in front of you, his eyes flickered onto your legs, and the blood seeping out between your fingers as you tried to keep pressure on the wound.Â
âI thought Iâd just hang out here,â you said, your sarcasm watered down by the fear clear in your teary eyes.
His brows furrowed, deep in thought for a moment as he looked between you and the distance there was still to cross to the only close shelter. Without saying a word, he peeled off his wet flannel, leaving himself in a shirt that was already nearly soaked through as the sideways rain beat down against the both of you. âIâm gonna tie this around your leg and then weâre gonna run, okay?âÂ
You shook your head frantically. The ache in your legs was intense and you had already lost a good amount of blood, not enough to make you woozy but you were well on your way. It felt like your heart had crawled up your throat, making it hard to breathe as panic soaked you to the bone along with the rain. Everything around you seemed to be ripped from the ground, even the anchored tent you were under was seconds away from being picked up.Â
âHey,â he said, grabbing a hold of your shoulders, shaking you slightly. âItâll be alright. You gotta trust me, though.â The sincerity shined in his eyes, bright as the rest of the power around you flickered wickedly. With a nod of your head, you dropped your hands from your leg and let him tie the flannel around your cut. As he pulled it tight, you cried out in pain. âIâm sorry,â he kept repeating until it was knotted. Quickly, he jumped to his feet and helped you up, looping an arm around your waist as you slung an arm around his shoulders.Â
âReady?â You didnât get a chance to respond as the tent you were under was plucked from the ground, anchors and all, and flung backward into the tornado as it tore through the front entrance of the fairgrounds. Tyler took off, giving you no choice but to follow.Â
You two stayed low, trying desperately to avoid the flying objects. With each step your leg burned, but Tylerâs hold on you was strong, not giving any room for you to lag behind or slip away. It felt like hours of running, but it was no more than a minute or two before you reached the shelter. The only major injury between the two of you was your leg, otherwise, you both collected a series of little cuts and bruises from your journey.Â
Stumbling into the restroom, you were met with a hoard of scared fairgoers. You two managed to find a spot to slot yourself in with everyone else. He helped you lower yourself to the floor back in the corner just as the tornado was fully on top of you. You brought your knees up to your chest and covered your head. Tyler sat flushed against your side; you felt his hands rest over the top of yours as the building rattled violently. Squeezing your eyes shut, you refused to see the damage until the howl of wind subsided and people started to stir.Â
Once it was over, everyone stumbled out of the shelter, getting jumbled together as police and ambulances rushed to the scene. Amongst people pushing and shoving to find their loved ones and get the hell home, you and Tyler were separated and before you could look for him, an EMT caught sight of your bloodied leg and ushered you to one of the ambulances.Â
You sat on the back after the EMT stitched up your leg, looking over the torn-apart fairgrounds. Debris was littered everywhere, food trucks and carts overturned and some demolished, and rides were dislocated and strewn about in pieces.Â
You clutched the bloodied flannel to your chest, shivering in the loss of adrenaline and temperature drop, and watched the sea of people until a familiar face popped into view, looking a little frantic as he stumbled through the crowd looking like he was in search of something. His eyes finally settled on you before he quickly pushed his way through the crowd until he reached you.Â
âHi,â you greeted, smiling tiredly.Â
âI was looking for you everywhere,â he said, sounding slightly out of breath. âI looked away for a second and you were gone and-â You continued to smile, and he stopped himself. âWhat? Why are you looking at me like that?âÂ
âNothing,â you replied quietly before clearing your throat. âI, um, I just wanted to thank you. And Iâm sorry for ruining your flannel.â You gestured to the ruined piece of clothing resting in your lap.Â
Tyler was quiet for a moment, looking at the large bandage around your shin. âDonât mention it,â he said, brushing off your thanks like he hadnât just pretty much saved your life. âWhat were you doing out there anyway?âÂ
You sighed, feeling a creep of embarrassment up your spine. You shouldâve known better but at the moment you just wanted to help people and had little regard for your own safety, until your leg was sliced open, that was. âThere were people still out there, trying to figure out where to go. I was trying to help.âÂ
âThat was stupid,â he said. âBut brave. Stupidly brave, maybe.âÂ
âFunny. I think Iâve said the same thing about you a time for two.âÂ
His signature smirk slowly fell onto his lips. âNot to my face.â
âOh, no. Never.âÂ
Tyler laughed, gently patting your knee, lingering for a moment before he dropped his hand back at his side. Someone called out your name, and you spotted your friend running back through the crowd. She had called you as soon as you had made it to the ambulance and told you sheâd come back to take you home.Â
âYou should get some rest,â he said. âIâll see you around.â As he turned around to walk away, you called out to him.Â
âTyler, wait.â He paused. âYou should try calling me again. Maybe Iâll answer this time.â Breaking out in a grin, he tipped his hat in another goodbye, leaving you with a new feeling stirring inside your chest.Â
Bonus!Â
Hours later, after you had cleaned yourself up, you were tucked into bed, reading by the lamp light knowing sleep was probably far off after the events of the night. You didnât expect your phone to ring that late into the night, and when you glanced at it, you couldnât help but roll your eyes at the caller ID, but that time it was something besides annoyance that you felt.Â
You answered, discarding your book on your nightstand. âYou donât waste any time do you,â you teased.Â
âWhat I can say,â Tyler said on the other line. âI know when I find something worth my while.âÂ

Matt was used to you breaking in. Sure, the first time it had happened he tried to fight back, but you had made it clear you werenât there to fight. You had found out his identity just three days before and you were far too curious to not come and say hi. He knew you were his enemyâŚtechnicallyâŚbut you hadnât tried to attack him yet, nor had you attempted to poison him as you had done to others in the past, so he found himself letting you stay. Sometimes he even kept the window unlatched just to make it easier for you.
It was a well known fact about you that you could move silently and, though youâd never fooled him yet, he often had to listen closely to tell when you had walked in. âHow did you even find out who I was anyway,â he spoke, seemingly to himself as he put his coat on the rack. You moved out of the shadows, still in your vigilante uniform.
âWasnât exactly hard, Daredevil and Matthew Murdock move in very similar circlesâŚoneâs just holding a cane.â You replied nonchalantly. He smiled to himself as you got comfortable on the sofa, crossing one leg over the other in a polite fashion (though you knew he wouldnât see it).
He continued to unwind as if you werenât there, just letting you observe him. Finally, once his tie was loose around his neck, he spoke again, âWill I ever know who you are?â He asked, taking his place in the chair beside you. You leaned forward, placing your chin in your palm and sighed.
âNo. Iâm a secretive person.â
It was certain, almost like a promise. Matt would never know, not if you could help it. He seemed to inch closer to you, a smile budding on his lips. âIs that why youâre still wearing your mask?â
You werenât sure how he knew, maybe there was a difference in how you moved or acted when you wore it. There was a long pause, silence blooming in answer to Mattâs question, then, as if he had begged you, you took the mask off.
You placed it in his hands, skin never coming in contact, âWho said I was?â He smiled to himself now, feeling the texture of the snakeskin mask. It was smooth, leathery and there was a large scratch down the middle of the left eye. Though he couldnât see you, he seemed to look into your eyes, a glint hidden in his that you couldnât understand. âIf youâre satisfied, Iâd like my snakeskin back.â You said nonchalantly, as if the vulnerability of being without your mask didnât scare you.
Matt waited for a moment, then handed it back. You headed for the window, thinking. âOh and Matt,â You turned on your heel, âI took my mask off for you. You owe me.â
âNo thanks.â
You slinked out of the window before he could speak again, latching it shut as you had so many times before. Locking it was supposed to mean, âdonât let me in again.â but he always unlocked it anyway. It was almost like he wanted you there.
He was waiting for you, that much he had admitted to himself. Matt sat idly in the same seat, head turned toward the open window to listen for you. You were late. From the first time you had shown up, youâd always climbed through the window at 11:00 on the dot, no later, no earlier. It was now 11:35.
Eventually, you practically fell through the threshold of the window, breath rapid and heartbeat fast. âAre you alright?â Was the first question that left his lips as you corrected yourself. You leaned against the doorframe as you usually did, though this time you clutched a large wound on your side.
âNever better.â You replied as you pulled the mask from your face, feeling as though you could finally breathe again. You pulled your hand away slightly, wincing at the sight of the blood. There was far too much. âSorry Iâm late, I had a run in with a man, a dog, a knife and a particularly vicious chain link fence.â You joked, breathing in sharply when the motion pulled at your skin.
He moved closer. âHow badly are you hurt?â He asked. You motioned for him to drop it and a moment passed. âI canât see you, remember. Iâll ask again, how badly are you hurt?â
You sighed and placed the mask on the cluttered side table. He could smell strong metal, something recognisable to him. It seemed to weep from you, joined by the faint and slowing heartbeat that tapped gently every so often. It was like Matt was drawn to you, the metal scent pulling him closer. Close enough that you gave in. You let go of a sharp breath and tumbled forward, collapsing into his arms like a falling leaf. Matt tried not to laugh at your gracefulness even in your worst moments.
Matt carried you to the sofa, placing you down as gently as he could and apologising quietly as he searched for the wound. He cut part of your uniform from your body in a neat square and delicately traced his fingers along your skin, feeling the tackiness of the blood coat his fingertips.
Eventually, his hands reached the wound and he got to work, bandaging you as softly as he could. Each movement was deliberate, and laced with worry. He wanted you to keep climbing through his window, just not like this.
You woke up a day later, side stinging and body heavy. You felt stronger, well rested (that was something new for you). You looked down to your stomach and saw a neat row of bandages, completely clean. Matt had been changing them every few hours - what a gentleman. You sat up with effort and grabbed the mask he had placed by your feet. The apartment was eerily empty, no sound of his gentle breaths. All that lingered was his soft cologne.
He had gone to work, leaving nothing but a note on the table. âYou owe me - DDâ the words were simple, printed out from a computer in a clean and simple font. You smiled and grabbed a pen from the side, scrawling your own message before heading out of the window.

summary: Why canât Spider-Man ever get a day off? Especially Christmas? His best friend cannot wrap her head around it, leading to a very stressful Christmas Eve â until a confession sheâd grown tired of being interrupted had found itself inked onto a small piece of paper, only to be read underneath a conveniently placed mistletoe.

note: this is really bad and really all over the place. holidays are a very difficult time for me and my family, so i just figured iâd cheer myself up with some soft spooder-man <3
this will be written in 3rd POV.
She would have found the mystical blanket of snow beautiful, had she not been distracted by the unforgiving gusts of wind that barreled through the streets of Queens.
It was Christmas Eve, and Y/n had been adamant on spending the holiday with her best friend and his lovely aunt. The Parker residence had become a second home for her, ever since she and Peter were small children; she smiled every time sheâd reminisce on how theyâd managed to â literally â fall into one anotherâs lives.
They were seven, and sheâd been trying to climb a tree in her uncleâs yard; he had just so happened to have been the Parkerâs neighbor for going on fifteen years.
Sheâd slipped on a build up of snow, crashing into May and Ben Parkerâs backyard with a sickening crack echoing from under the skin of her right arm.
Peter had actually been the one to alert his aunt and uncle, and the rest of their lives had written itself out in that moment.
Y/n knocked excitedly on the front door of the house, waiting for only a few milliseconds before the oak panel swung open to reveal a very eager May Parker.
âMerry Christmas, May!â
âOh, N/n!â She chuckled, âGet in here, get out of the snow! Youâll get sickâŚâ
âWhat?â The girl chuckled, âNo merry Christmas back? Have you already started hating me, Mrs. Parker?â She joked.
May rolled her eyes, a smile etched onto her lips as she helped the girl hang her jacket by the door.
The shorter woman ushered Y/n into the kitchen, the angelic scent of lasagna gracing her senses. Her smile broadened as she quickly began to help the woman, before she could object.
âHas Peter gotten here, yet?â
âNo,â the woman sighed. âWhen I called him, he said he was stuck in the holiday rush on the subway⌠Lord only knows how stressed he must be, right now. I just hope heâs okay.â
Y/n gulped, knowing full and well Peter rarely ever took the subway anymore; she nodded in agreement with the woman beside her, clearing her throat subtly before changing the conversation. âYouâll never believe what I got him.â
âOh?â The older woman inquired, a smirk gracing her lips as one of her eyebrows raised. âEnlighten me, Hun.â
Y/n jumped in her spot excitedly, sprinting over to her jacket by the door, pulling a small box from one of the pockets, and running back into the kitchen.
âHow many times have I had to tell you not to run in the house?â
âSorry, May,â the h/c girl chuckled, sliding the thin box across the counter. âTake a peek.â
May did just that, gently opening the box and widening her eyes at the locket before her. They both knew Peter barely ever wore jewelry, but this would more than likely never leave his neck⌠not even as Spider-Man.
She pried open the oval locket, smiling impossibly wider as her eyes landed upon two images inside.
One of the Parker family, before Ben passed.
And the other, of Peter, Harry, and Y/n on his thirteenth birthday.
âHeâs going to love this!â May cheered, meeting the e/c irises before her. âWhereâd you manage to get this, N/n?â
Y/n simply shrugged, a sly grin gracing her lips. âA great magician never reveals her secrets.â
âŚ
Where the hell was he?
May had already gone to bed, obliviously believing Peter when heâd called and said he wouldnât make it until the next morning.
Y/n sat furiously in his old room, checking the time on her phone every fifteen minutes. Sheâd tried calling him a million times, it seemed, but he hadnât answered even once.
She decided that sheâd had enough.
Peter Parker, Spider-Man or not, deserved Christmas off.
Y/n stormed downstairs â albeit, quietly, not to wake May â and rushed for her jacket. She knew sheâd end up finding Peter, all she had to do was follow the path of destruction whatever criminal heâd gotten caught up with this time had left behind.
Sheâd been thankful for May making her a copy of the house key, locking the door behind her with the womanâs safety heavy on her mind.
Y/n L/n had only moved down the street from the Parker residence, while Peter had found himself an apartment decently far. Theyâd agreed that it had been a good idea, in case May needed help and he couldnât get there in time.
The girl stormed through the streets of New York, a frigid scowl etched onto her features â whether it had been sourced from the cold, or her best friendâs lack of arrival, she didnât even know.
It hadnât taken long before her e/c gaze locked onto a fight in the distance, the red and blue flashing of police lights haunting the otherwise barren street.
âRhino got out again?â She thought, scoffing internally. âJust fuckinâ great.â
Y/n began sprinting to the scene, her concern for her own safety vanishing with each angered stride.
She managed to reach the barricades that had been placed, as if that would have done much against the mechanical suit Rhino had obtained.
The girl watched irritably as Spider-Man fought the man restlessly, his sarcastic quips echoing alongside the sounds of Rhinoâs struggle to catch the masked man.
âMaâam, you cannot be here right now.â An officer stated, trying to escort her from the barricade. She refused to move, glaring lethally at the lawman and causing him to back off slowly.
Rhino had punched through a nearby building, some debris ricocheting toward her and lodging itself into her thigh.
Her adrenaline was so high from her anger, sheâd barely even noticed the crimson pool beginning to stain her favorite jeans.
When everything had calmed, and Rhino had been subdued, Spider-Manâs masked eyes caught the deathly glare of an all-too-familiar face.
Heâd started to panic, well aware that the L/n temper was not to be messed with â when heâd caught sight of her injury, seemingly before she had.
The red and blue clad hero swung over to her, announcing to the officers that she was injured and he was going to take her to the hospital â but he knew her better than that.
The last time Y/n L/n had willingly stepped into a hospital, was the day theyâd met.
Instead, he swung the fuming girl through the unlocked window of his childhood bedroom. She sat on the bed, her arms crossed, as she watched the man before her close the pane and remove his mask.
âWhat the hell were you doinâ out there, N/n?â He asked, his tone laced with concern as he rummaged through his room for the first-aid kit heâd stashed oh-so long ago.
âMe?â She whisper-yelled, attempting to stand, but the slowly appearing ache of her thigh had forced her back down. âItâs Christmas, Pete! What were you doing out there?â
The brown-eyed boy looked at her like sheâd gone dumb, having witnessed exactly what heâd been doing all night. âUhâ Rhino got out?â
His tone had matched the circumstance â it had been very obvious.
âPete,â she groaned. âItâs Christmas. If anyone deserves the holidays off, itâs you. I was worried sick!â
Peter sighed, knowing she was entirely correct â he did deserve holidays off, yeah; but scumbags like Aleksei would never allow it. The people heâd fight didnât care about what holidays they were ruining, they simply saw it as the city being left vulnerable in what should have been a time of joy.
He pulled the first-aid kit from under his desk, shaking his head slightly. âI know⌠Look, can we talk about this later? Youâre kind of⌠bleeding everywhere.â
âYeah, fine.â
âOkay,â he nodded. âHereâs some shorts, go change so I can take care of that.â
âŚ
Christmas day had gone without further incident, so far, Y/nâs newly stained jeans finding themselves hidden away in the outside trash can.
The trio had just finished dinner, lively conversation circling between them as they prepared to open their gifts.
Y/n had insisted on giving the duo her presents last, earning a knowing look from May.
May Parker had gotten her nephew a new sewing machine, and sheâd made a cookbook of her own recipes for Y/n so the girl could make some of her favorites whenever sheâd like to.
Peter had gotten May a new blanket, fluffy and warm, and heâd gotten his best friend a gag gift.
A fucking arm cast.
âYouâre so dead,â she smiled humorously, before heâd handed her a separate box. She sent him an untrusting gaze, maintaining her smile as she gracefully ripped the wrapping paper to shreds.
Y/n pulled the small box from its candy-cane printed paper, glancing anxiously at the man before her as she opened the black box.
Her eyes widened at the silver necklace before her, she looked up at him with a panicked gaze â hoping they didnât have the same fucking idea.
Her worry had quickly dissipated when sheâd pulled the chain from its case; dangling from the thin cuban link, was a cursive P charm.
Peter had been fearful that she wouldnât like the gift, until heâd watched the infectious smile crawl across her lips and make them itâs permanent home.
âPete!â She gasped, looking between he and May ecstatically. Theyâd had the same idea, just different executions of it.
The brown eyed boy chuckled, âLike it?â
âNo,â she spat sarcastically. âHelp me put it on, Bill Nye.â
âThe science guyâŚâ He drifted, before laughing at her reaction and moving to fasten the hook.
Sheâd moved her h/c strands out of the way, allowing him easy access to the small silver hook.
When heâd finished, she found herself staring at her reflection in the window across from her. This just looked like it belonged on her.
Like Peter Parker belonged in her life.
And, he did.
Y/n was well aware that she wouldnât be who she was if it werenât for Peter, and vice versa.
With a bright smile, she spun to the pair and handed them both their gifts. May hadnât expected to also be receiving a form of jewelry from the girl sheâd viewed as family, but Y/n had never failed to surprise her.
May had opened hers first, eyes widening at the golden ring with three different stones and named embedded in it.
The golden band had contained hers, Peterâs, and Benâs birth stones.
She felt herself beginning to tear up, launching from her seat to embrace Y/n into a lung-collapsing hug. âThank you so much, Y/n.â
âThank you, May,â she chuckled. âYouâve become the mother I never had.â
The older Parker smiled tearfully, wiping her eyes as she sat back in her seat; then, both of the womenâs gazes locked onto the nervous body of Peter Parker.
He could tell by the box that it had been jewelry, but heâd been afraid to open it because he didnât wear jewelry. At least, not regularly.
âCâmon, Pete.â Y/n urged with a smile, âIf you donât like it, I can always take it back and get you something else.â
Peter hated hearing that â heâd always loved everything sheâd gotten him, he was just very hesitant when it came to jewelry.
With a deep breath, he slid open the thin black box â it actually resembled the one Y/nâs necklace had been packaged in. His eyes scanned the oval before him, carefully prying the locket open⌠and thatâs when he saw it.
Two images of the most important people that had ever graced his life.
He didnât even realize heâd begun crying, the smile on his lips maintaining its vastness.
âThis is amazing, N/n.â He chuckled, teary cinnamon eyes meeting her e/c ones. âThank you.â
Her smiled broadened as he stood, pulling her into one of the best hugs sheâs ever experienced. They stood there for a few moments, before a whisper had brushed against his ear. âThereâs a note in the box. Donât read it until May goes to bed.â
âŚ
Peter and Y/n sat in his room, smiling at one another as they fiddled with their different necklaces.
The vigilante had held the note between his fingers, looking at his best friend expectantly. âIs this going to blow up in my face?â
âNo.â
âPromise?â
âPinkie,â she chuckled. âGo on, read it.â
Truth be told, she was terrified for his reaction. The only person in their lives to have ever figured out her long-term feelings for the nerd before them had been Harry â but he was gone, now.
Peter pursed his lips to the side, slowly unfolding the small paper.
Pete.
Uh. How am I even supposed to write this? What am I even supposed to say?
Look, donât judge, the only notes Iâve ever written were back in school.
Here goes nothingâŚ
Kidding! I totally just wasted your time. Iâm probably trying not to laugh as youâre reading this.
Anyways!
Iâm in love with you.
Okay byeeeeee!
â N/n <3
Peter could have sworn his heart had stopped reading those last two lines, looking up at her with such a genuine expression it nearly made her stop laughing on the spot.
âYouâre fuckinâ with me⌠Youâve gotta be fuckinâ with me. Right?â
You chuckled, âDamn, youâre that oblivious? Itâs not like Iâve been trying to tell you since we were fifteen. Every time I tried, you had superhero-ing to do.â
His smile had told her exactly what she needed to know, and the conveniently placed mistletoe above his bed (courtesy of Y/n and her scheming ways) had suddenly cause him to become hyper-aware of everything in that moment.
âWell,â he smiled, pointing toward the ceiling. âI donât think that was there last night.â
âNo, I donât think soâŚâ She drifted, before shrugging smugly. âMustâve appeared magically.â
âWe canât break tradition, now, can we?â
âIt would be disrespectful to the holiday,â Y/n smiled, pursing her lips to the side in false contemplation.
That night had become the start of many, the holiday that had kicked off the rest of their lives.

The taxi driver hefted your suitcase out of the trunk of his car, setting it onto the circular gravel driveway beside you with an audible huff of exertion. You watched as he wiped a hand across his forehead, one hand still holding the hanger of your dress high above your head so the white garment bag wouldn't drag along the ground.Â
âThank you,â you said, arm already growing tired from holding up your dress.
The man closed the trunk of the taxi, turning around and sending you a friendly smile. âOf course, miss,â he replied. âI hope you have a lovely weekend. Certainly looks like a nice place youâre staying at.â
You laughed lightly in return, wishing the man a good day before he turned and headed back to the driverâs side of the car. Lifting up the handle of your suitcase that you'd brought for the weekend, you turned and focused on the grand building before you. It was easily two levels tall with trails of ivy growing along most of the stone exterior between the numerous large windows. The manor itself was impressive with two wings branching off either side of the main building. The front driveway you were currently standing on led up to a walkway that wound between an impressive garden of hedges and flowers. In the center was a large fountain, and the peaceful sound of the water spewing forth met your ears once the taxi had finally driven off behind you.
The venue was massive, boasting quite an expansive plot of acreage that it was nestled insideâor so Marci had told you during all the wedding planning. A long, winding road encompassed by trees on either side had led up to Fairfield Manor, and not too far behind the manor you'd spotted what looked like a forest when the taxi had pulled up. You were positive if you consumed too much alcohol this weekend and wandered outside past sunset, you'd surely end up lost.
As much as Marci had shown you photos of the place, gushing over it repeatedly to you about how perfect it was for her and Foggyâs wedding, the photos certainly hadnât done it justice.Â
Beginning to make your way up to the entrance of the manor, you walked towards the winding path which led through the stunning garden out front, carrying your dress and toting your luggage behind you. Seeing the place in person had left you wondering how Foggy and Marci had afforded this venue for an entire three days. You figured Foggyâs firm mustâve been doing well because Marciâs salary alone couldn't possibly have paid for everything. Though with how extravagant it was, it most certainly screamed Marci.
This weekend the entire bridal party, along with Marci and Foggyâs immediate family, were staying here for the duration of the wedding festivities. Tonight you were practicing the rehearsal for the wedding ceremony here at the venue before heading to a nearby restaurant for the rehearsal dinner. Tomorrow was the big wedding day itself, which meant an early morning start for hair and makeup during breakfast, followed by an incredibly long day and probably a drunken evening. Then on Sunday Marci had scheduled a late morning brunch before everyone departed the manor, allowing a bit more time to visit before the newlyweds left for their honeymoon.
Coming to a stop before the large, ornate wooden door that seemed to tower over you, you released the handle of your luggage long enough to push it open. Immediately you were met with the sound of voices and loud, boisterous laughter coming from a hall to your right as the door swung wide into the foyer. Though as you began to pull your suitcase into the building, still juggling your garment bag in your other hand, your ears picked up on the sound of a familiar voice. One you hadn't heard in a long time.
One that instantly set you on edge.
It was annoying that he was here. Of course you'd expected itâMarci had warned you ahead of timeâbut actually seeing him again this weekend was going to be another story.Â
Matthew Murdock. The cocky fuck boy of Columbia who thought he was smarter than you, always going out of his way to show you up and point out your every mistake because one time you had embarrassed him by correcting him in class. He was an asshole, always so irritatingly ethical for a man who slept around without a care for anyone's feelings. Though of course he'd never flirted with you , always choosing to argue with you instead. And when graduation day had come, he'd certainly rubbed it in your face that he'd been top of the class.Â
Though what he hadn't known was that you'd spent most of your time busting your ass working at a coffee shop just to try to pay what the scholarships wouldn't cover of your tuition while your mother was struggling with a cancer diagnosis. Thankfully she'd gone into remission not long after you'd graduated, but still, Matthew Murdock had made college miserable for you on top of everything youâd had going on. And you'd despised him for it.
So you certainly weren't excited to see him this weekend.
Setting your luggage down and turning back around to close the heavy door after yourself, you forced yourself to take a deep breath and remain calm. You were here for Marci, after all. This weekend was a big moment for her and you were excited and grateful to be a part of everything. She was one of your best friends. And truthfully you'd never had issues with Franklin Nelson. He had at least always been cordial and friendly to you.Â
So you werenât going to think about him .
The moment youâd shut the door with a solid thud , you heard your name being excitedly called from behind you. Spinning around with a smile already plastered across your face, you spotted Marci with outstretched arms racing towards you across the foyer. Her short, flowy white dress fluttered around her legs as she nearly jumped on you, pulling you into a tight embrace.
âYouâre finally here!â she exclaimed. âI was wondering when youâd show up!â
"Sorry, I got caught up at work," you told her, squeezing her just as tightly back the best you could with your dress still in hand. "Had some details to finalize before I was gone for the weekend and you know how Sheridan gets."
Marci pulled away from you, rolling her eyes at the mention of your boss.Â
"I do, in fact," she answered. "But you're here now so let's not talk about work! Come on, let's get your things to your room. It's almost time for the rehearsal."
Grabbing your luggage handle you followed Marci down the hallway, wheeling your bag behind you in one hand and now no longer as concerned about the garment bag dragging along the floor in your other, your arm tired from holding it above your head for so long already. As the pair of you walked, you could see a group of others that you assumed were the bridal party already congregating about midway down the hall, drinks in their hands and dress clothes on. The sight was a reminder that youâd still have to change quickly before the events of the evening because you hadnât wanted to stay in the dress slacks and blouse you had worn to work earlier for the duration of the evening.Â
"I take it I'm the last one to arrive then?" you asked Marci.
The sound of both of your heels clicking along the marble floor echoed around the elaborate hallway as the pair of you walked. Your eyes scanned each painting lining the walls that you passed, noticing each one was a beautiful watercolor of a picturesque scene. Overhead you noticed the ornate chandeliers hanging down, the crystal glinting in the light. Truthfully this place was stunning.Â
"Yes, but that's alright," Marci answered, waving a hand. "I appreciate that you sent a text as a forewarning though. But," she continued, glancing at you over her shoulder and wincing before she leaned in to whisper, "that also means you're the last to pick a room. So you sort ofâŚdon't get to pick."
Shoulders sagging, you shot Marci a flat look. "What's that supposed to mean? Is the heat not working in it or something? Or it's haunted by a hundred year old ghost?"
Marci shook her head, a sheepish smile on her face. "No, it just means the only room left is the oneâŚnext to Mattâs," she answered softly.Â
You came to an abrupt halt, stopping dead in your tracks and closing your eyes. Your first instinct was to turn around and call that taxi back to see if you could catch a ride back to the city. It was bad enough you'd have to be cordial to Matt this weekend, but you certainly did not want to interact with him more than necessary.Â
But you were here for Marci this weekend, you reminded yourself again. It was only for a few days that youâd be staying here and having to run into him, and then you'd go back to never running into him again in the city. And it would be heaven. Inhaling a deep breath, you forced a smile onto your face as you focused back on Marci.
âI know you both never really got along butââ
"Itâs okay," you replied slowly, shaking your head. "So our rooms are next to each other for a few days? Not a big deal," you said, trying to convince yourself just as much as Marci. "Doesn't mean I'll have to talk to him. Or see him. Or anything more than necessary."
"Right," Marci agreed, nodding quickly. "Exactly. You two only need to interact for the wedding and the rehearsal a bit.âÂ
With a sigh you grabbed your luggage, continuing to make your way back down the hall with Marci at your side. But as the pair of you began to pass the group of bridal party members already loudly conversing with Foggy, you heard them call out to Marci, begging her to stay and join them. Attention shifting to the group, your eyes almost instantly landed on Matt standing just beside Foggy. Your jaw clenched at the sight of him, your hand tightening around the handle of your luggage as your back stiffened.
He was dressed in a nice pair of slacks, a white dress shirt with a dark red tie, and a dark suit coat. He'd apparently switched out those black rectangular glasses he always wore in college, exchanging them for some round ones with red lenses. Admittedly they looked good on him, which only annoyed you further. Because of course he'd grown more attractive in the years since you'd last seen himâhe even seemed broader and somehow more muscular under that fitted suit coat with the buttons of his dress shirt straining at the seams. Though you had a strong feeling he was probably still the same flirty asshole you remembered him as, maybe even worse now since he could throw around that he had his own law firm. And the stupid smile on his face as his head turned in your direction only irritated you.
"I'll be back in a minute," Marci told the group. She said your name, telling them you'd just arrived. "I was going to show her to her room. Help her get settled first."
"No, that's alright. Go on," you assured her, gesturing your head to the group. "I can find the room on my own. I need to change anyway and then I can join everyone."
"You sure?" Marci asked carefully, focusing back on you.
"Yeah, don't worry about me," you replied.
And thatâs when you heard it. Matt saying your name, the sound of it on his lips causing your eyes to narrow as your head turned slowly back towards him. It had been so long since youâd heard him say it, yet it still had your blood boiling almost instantly. The smug smirk that quickly grew on his mouth wasn't helping, either.
"Showing up late?â Matt teased you. âEven after all these years, you still need to make everyone wait on you?â
You bit back the comment forming on your tongue. This was not the time nor the place and you certainly werenât going to let him openly get a rise out of you in front of everyone. Though it didnât escape your notice when Foggy nudged Mattâs shoulder, leaning in and whispering something to him.
âSome of us had work to finish, Murdock ,â you countered briskly. Turning your attention back to Marci, you told her, âIâll get changed fast and be right out. I wonât keep you waiting on me.â
âDonât worry about it, I understand,â Marci told you, shooting Matt a glare that you know Foggy saw. âWeâll be here a bit longer before we head down to the ceremony location out in the courtyard. And your room is just at the end of the hall,â she continued, pointing down the hallway. âRoom twelve. On the right.â
You thanked her before continuing the rest of the way towards your room, fuming internally because youâd been here a matter of minutes and Matt was already getting under your skin. It didnât bode well for the rest of this weekend.
You stood with your arms crossed over your chest and your focus fixed straight ahead on the wedding coordinator who was currently running over details about tomorrowâs ceremony with Foggy and Marci. The rest of the bridal party had been paired and lined up at the back of the courtyard behind you, all of you patiently awaiting instructions on what to do next.Â
There was a lot of chatter coming from the group behind you, too. All of the other bridal party members were taking the time to get to know their partners, animatedly talking to each other. Unfortunately you being the Maid of Honor when Matt was the Best Man meant you two were stuck together for the wedding events this weekend. Currently you were doing your best to ignore his irksome presence beside you as he continued to tap his cane against the stone pavement, the repetitive sound causing you to grind your teeth back and forth. It didnât help that you were forced to stand so close to him that you could feel the warmth of his body along your bare right arm, the heat of it raising goosebumps. But it was only because it was early fall and a little chilly outside; you couldnât help it that the bit of warmth happened to feel good.
âSo are you just planning to ignore me the entire weekend?â Matt asked softly, leaning slightly towards you as he spoke.
âI would prefer to, yes,â you answered simply.
Matt laughed bitterly, shaking his head. The gesture caught your attention and you glanced at him beside you through narrowed eyes.
âWhat?â you asked him.
âJust canât believe you havenât changed after all these years,â he replied.
Eyebrows shooting up onto your forehead at his comment, you gaped at him. Was he serious ?
âThatâs funny coming from the self-important asshole who upon hearing Iâm here decides to immediately make a rude comment,â you shot back. âPretty sure you havenât changed one bit, Murdock.â
âAnd youâre apparently still stuck on using my last name,â he quipped back, his head turning towards you as that smirk you hated tugged at his lips. âWhy is that, I wonder?âÂ
He leaned over just a bit, his mouth gradually lowering beside your ear. You felt a shiver run up your spine when his warm breath grazed your neck. You told yourself it was due to the chill of the evening and not whatever effect he thought he had on you.
âIs it because youâve always been afraid that you might actually enjoy saying my name? That you might like the taste of it on your tongue, sweetheart?â he purred in your ear.Â
âDonât call me that,â you hissed back, your hard stare focused ahead of you once again. âIâm not like those other women, Murdock. Donât use that patronizing pet name of yours to lump me in with everyone else that bullshit works on. Because your so-called âcharmâ doesnât work on me.â
âMmm,â he hummed out, straightening back up beside you. âYou sure it doesnât?â
A second later you felt his fingertips lightly brush against your thigh, grazing your skin just beneath the hem of your dress. You sucked in a breath and held it, your eyes falling shut at the warmth of his calloused touch. Matt had never flirted with you beforeâand heâd certainly never touched you before. Youâd only ever seen him try to work his charm on other women, so what the hell was he doing right now? Was he actually interested in you?
Though when he chuckled softly beside you, your eyes immediately flew open again. Your heart began to pound hard in agitation as opposed to whatever it was that had sped it up a moment ago. Because the cocky asshole had done that on purpose . He was fucking with you, just like heâd always done in college. Except this time it felt significantly more embarrassing because, for the briefest of moments, it had felt good when heâd touched you.
âSeems like it might, sweetheart,â he whispered back.Â
âUse my name if you have a need to speak with me, Murdock,â you ground out between clenched teeth, your cheeks heating. âThough Iâd prefer if we kept our interactions limited this weekend so we donât ruin things for Marci and Foggy.â
âOh youâve grown so much more bossy ,â Matt teased in delight. âThat makes ignoring what you want that much more fun, sweetheart.â
As the wedding coordinator began to make her way back towards the bridal party still lined up, you expelled a sharp breath from your nose. Your hands balled into fists as you hugged your arms tighter over your chest, your nails biting into your palms. This weekend was going to be far worse than youâd imagined. Initially youâd hoped that Matt had grown up since graduation, willing to let whatever it was that made him a prick to you go for a few days for the sake of his best friendâs wedding.
But instead he was still soâŚÂ Matthew Murdock . Had he really not grown since college? Matured into an actual adult? Why the hell was he like this? Because youâd only ever seen him treat you this way, and it was infuriating.Â
âAlright ladies and gentleman,â the wedding coordinator announced.
Stopping just a few feet before you and Matt, she clapped her hands together to quiet the group. A smile spread across her mouth when the chatter came to a stop and you placed all of your focus on her and not Matt, though you could see that smug smile on his lips out of the corner of your eye.
âYouâll be starting the processional inside, just past those doors behind you, for the actual ceremony tomorrow,â she continued, gesturing to the French doors youâd all come out of a few minutes ago before lining up. âBut for the sake of time weâll start out here. Youâll be paired up with whomever youâre walking down the aisle with, moving one at a time down the aisle thatâll be here tomorrow when the chairs are set up. Then the pair of you part before the stone steps for the ceremony just there,â she said, turning at the waist and pointing to where Foggy was already standing and looking nervous. âOnce the couple before you parts, the next one proceeds down the aisle. So letâs practice that for now, shall we?â
The woman had turned, making to get out of the way of the line for the processional, but then her eyes caught you and Matt standing beside each other. Her brows creased as she abruptly came to a stop, turning back around and pointing a finger between the pair of you.
âYou twoâBest Man and Maid of Honorâyou need to link arms while you walk down the aisle,â she said. âGo on, just like the others behind you.â
At her comment, Mattâs arm rose up beside you, brushing against your own arm as he offered it out to you. You looked over at it, your lip pulling back in slight distaste. You did not want to have him escort you down the aisle now or tomorrow. And that sentiment was made all the more true when your gaze slid up, noticing Matt was smiling down at you in sheer amusement. He was clearly enjoying your discomfort.
âCome on, sweetheart,â Matt urged. âLet me escort you.â
Rolling your eyes in annoyance, you slipped your arm through his before grabbing onto his bicep. But as soon as your fingers lightly curled around his suit coat, you could feel the thick muscle of his arm beneath your hand. Swallowing hard, you pushed that observation as far from your mind as you could. It wasnât a fact you needed to remember about him.
But as the pair of you began to make your way towards the stone steps where the ceremony would take place tomorrow, Mattâs cane lightly tapping along the stone as you led him there, you couldnât help but notice his head had turned a bit towards you. And unless your eyes were deceiving you, it looked like he was focused on you behind his red lenses.

now playing: born to die - lana del rey
"choose your last words, this is the last time/'cause you and i, we were born to die"
You would think after patching him up too many times to count, five years without him, and countless sleepless nights worrying if he was alive, you would think youâd be used to Matt Murdock and his world of surprises.
And then you get kidnapped, so maybe youâre not so immune to surprises.
Itâs really such a shame too, because youâre storming out of the apartment, too angry to take notice of your surroundings.
Silly, foolish, ditzy you.
Because it isnât like Matt hasnât told you time and time again that you need to be careful, especially when you go out alone at night. But heâs so angry that he doesnât even think about the potential dangers of Hellâs Kitchen at three a.m. when Daredevil has been tucked away for the night and Matt Murdock comes back out to play.
Heâs been taking more and more patrols because with Fisk being out of prison he canât help but be constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop.
How silly he was to think that maybe he could have it allâA successful law firm, good friends and a loving wife.
Silly, foolish, ditzy Matt.
But after a week of nonstop patrols, youâre both fed up and tired, and above all, youâre yearning for each other. Neither of you allow yourselves to be totally happy all the time. It would just make everything too easy.
So, after yelling at each other over, what? Patrols? Cases? Burnt dinners? Youâre freezing on the streets, and you get about five blocks before you stop and rub your eyes.
This is dumb, you rationalize. Of course, youâre both stressed out and tired, but youâve gotten through rougher times before, and you both made an oath. To each other, in front of his God, to love each other no matter what.
You realize you left your wedding ring on the table, the ghost of the metal around your finger haunting you. You were dumb for leaving and Matt was dumb for telling you to go. Youâre made for each other.
You turn around to go back to your shared apartment, and then, someone grabs you from behind. Your first instinct is to yell for your husband, but you donât get the chance to before youâre knocked out, by what you can only guess to be a gun or maybe a large fist.
â˘Â â˘Â â˘
You wake up in this dingy room, the lighting not suitable for much of anything except to make you afraid. The set up is almost comical and in a fucked up away, stereotypical for a kidnapping. Youâre tied up to a chair, and the lights shine only bright enough so you can see shadows and rats scurrying along.
The air is this weird musk of salt and earth, and you realize youâre near the docks, and thatâs about all you know about your current location.
Your head is still pounding from whatever it was you were hit with, but you can see another chair a few feet from you and a wooden table with various weapons laying on it. You donât feel good about this one. Also on the table is an old school record player. You have no idea what the intention is with it.
You try to keep your cool, knowing that wherever you wander, your husband will not be very far off. That whatever is happening, he will be coming to find you no matter how upset he is for whatever it was you were fighting about earlier.
And then, out of the shadows, there he is.Â
But heâs too big to be Matt, and he has a man standing next to him.
Frank, maybe?
And then you realize who this man is.
Heâs Wilson Fisk, the kingpin who has done nothing but torture and kill people, shoving it in Mattâs face for years. Matt only met you after Fisk was put back in prison, and you know at some point in the five-year blip without Matt, he had escaped prison.
So, this is the first time youâve had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Fisk. When he meets your eye, you do nothing but stare.
âGood evening, Mrs. Murdock. Itâs a shame we must meet under these circumstances.â He tells you, taking a seat in front of you. His henchman stands behind the chair.
âItâs regretful to say the least.â You tell him, not intending to make any more of an enemy out of him than Matt already has, not right now.
âI wanted to congratulate you on your wedding. I remember my own, it was a rather special day.â
You know that was the day Matt took him down. The night that he, Karen and Foggy took him down.
âIâve heard stories. It seemed like a lovely day.â
âYouâre a much more gracious guest than your counterpart.â
âWell, Iâm sure people say similar things about you and yours.â
He seems to consider this for a moment before nodding.
âYouâre probably right about that, Mrs. Murdock. I wanted to tell you Iâm terribly sorry these are the circumstances in which we are finally introduced. But it seems Mr. Murdock has been interested in finding out more about my endeavors. And you see, we simply cannot have that. I made a promise not to hurt Miss Page or Mr. Nelson but it seems you were not included in that deal.â Of course not, it had been a long time before you showed up. âSo, youâre how weâre going to send Mr. Murdock a message.â
Huh.
So, this is how you die.
Well, you might as well go out with a bang.
âYou see, Mrs. Murdock, When I was a boyââ
âIâm going to stop you, Mr. Fisk, because your sob story is rather dull. I know who you are. You were beaten by your father, just like I was. The difference is that I donât use that as an excuse to murder my way to the top of the food chain. And you can torture me, assault me, whatever you feel you need to do. But if you think for a second that Iâll forget whoâs coming to stop you, you are sorely mistaken. And if you think heâll ever stop trying to find me, you do not know my husband very well.â
Fisk stares at you for a while, his gaze hardening into a glare.
âYouâre right. You do know who I am. Because weâre rather similar.â He stands up and nods to the man nearby. âIf Murdock can hear her far from here, make sure he hears her screaming.â
Then Wilson Fisk walks away, and you are left with the sickening gaze of a man who has no good intentions.
The man goes to the record player and starts to play a song you recognize quickly as âFly Me To The Moonâ by Frank Sinatra. As he does this, he speaks,
âHello, Mrs. Murdock. Iâm John.â You stay quiet, and he just enjoys the song.
He picks up a knife from the table and goes to you, this grin on his face that makes you sick.
But you remember a trick from not only your childhood, but also from Frank who told you the key to remaining strong under tortureâDistraction.
You stare straight ahead, trying not to mind as the man runs the knife over your skin. You think about Matt. You imagine him in his wedding suit, the smile he had on as you approached him down that aisle. You think about when he asked you to marry him, andâ
A sharp pain slashes down your arm, cutting open the shirt youâre wearing. You yell in pain, before moving in to try and take deep breaths.
You can do this. Matt will be here soon.
You continue to breathe through the anxiety and the pain, trying not to think too hard about when John hums along to Sinatraâs voice, guiding his knife around your skin. Another cut finds itself on your shoulder.
This goes on for a while, with the classic song looping over and over again. John never seems to tire of it, no matter how badly you will for it to end. As the song ends in one particularly good loop, John hits your face hard, and your nose starts bleeding.
You try to think of Mattâs voice. You donât listen to Johnâs torments, knowing it will only egg him on further. You just want him to burn at that point.
By the end of⌠Countless Frank Sinatra serenades, you have cuts littered around your body, dry blood on your face from your nose and tears running down your face. When heâs eventually done, two men cut you out from the chair and drag you along to a smaller, darker room. You are left in there with a small meal, and you just huddle against a corner, nearest a barred window out of your reach.
And then, you begin to speak for the first time since you saw Fisk.
âMatt,â You whisper, âIâm by the docks.â You tell him, not sure if he can even hear you. âPlease, Iâm sorry for everything, please just come find me..â You mumble, too tired and aching to try and do more.
â˘Â â˘Â â˘
The next day, or what you presume to be the next day since you have no way to tell how much time has passed, youâre woken up by a loud banging on the door of your.. cell..?
The same two men enter and drag you back to the room, where John waits for you.
âHow are you feeling today, Mrs. Murdock?â He asks.
You glare.
âFuck you.â
He laughs and shakes his head.
âWhat happened to the polite young woman Mr. Fisk and I met yesterday?â
Youâre filled with unprecedented anger.
âI said, Fuck you!â
He wastes no time, grabbing a lighter off the table and starting the record player again. Once more, Frank Sinatraâs voice fills the room, and youâre pretty sure once youâre done with John, and then Fisk, youâll bring Sinatra back from the dead just to kill him again.
Youâve never really been a violent person, but you suspect that it lives in the worst parts of you, just as it did with your own father. Youâre much better at keeping it all at bay. Besides, it does you no good to be violent while you have Matt. Heâs plenty angry for the both of you.
Oh, Matt..
This is how time passes for you. While John tortures you, burning you or carving into your skin, you think about how great it will be to choke the life out of the singer⌠And you think about Matt. When youâre in your dark little room, you talk to him. Even if he canât hear you, you must hope that heâs looking for you.
â˘Â â˘Â â˘
Days pass. How long have you been here?
One night, you have the following dream:
It starts out as a memory. A memory of you and Matt. Youâre lying in bed with him, and the sunlight is hitting his face just right. You love this memory, itâs one you recall often. He just has this angelic look to him.
Yeah, most people who encounter him, especially at night, meet the devil. But occasionally, you get glimpses of the angel you know he is. Heâs sleeping, and you think in this state, he is the most relaxed youâll ever see him.
Then, before your eyes, the dream shifts and youâre in this black void, on the ground.
Foggy, Karen, Frank, and Matt stand around you. You run to Matt but hit a clear shield keeping him from you. You bang on the glass, well, maybe itâs glass, you donât know. You try to scream, but your voice never reaches your ears. You begin to look around, looking for a way out.
An eerie version of âFly Me To The Moonâ plays as you glance over to Foggy and watch in horror as his body begins to turn to ash, just like Matt and Karen did when they were blipped. You scream, banging against the shield, but your screams are silent.
You glance back and see the same thing happening to Frank. No, no, no! It was never supposed to happen this way! Frank and Foggy, they lived! They got their time! They donât die like this!
And then Karen starts too. You start sobbing, not wanting her to go. You had missed her so much, and you only just got her back. But soon enough, sheâs gone too, and youâre left in front of your husband.
His hand comes up to rest on the forcefield and he frowns softly.
He says your name gently, and then adds, âYou know it couldnât last forever, right?â
And then just as quickly as before, he is gone again. You remain there in that void, sobbing and screaming though no noise reaches you. This canât be it! You just got him back, you needed him! You couldnât take being alone for another five years⌠Or moreâŚ
The dream transforms and youâre in this grand ballroom. People are dancing elegantly and youâre in this.. obnoxious ball gown. But across the room, you can see Matt. Heâs dressed in an all-black suit, with a red masquerade mask covering his face. The mask has little red devil horns on it.
Now, the orchestra plays their rendition of Sinatraâs romantic classic. And you step towards Matt, attempting to make your way towards him, only to be met with a masked man, beginning to twirl you around.
You jump from man to man, until eventually, youâre dancing with a man in an all-white suit, a man you quickly recognize as Fisk. No matter how hard you try to escape his grasp, he holds on tighter. The two of you stop dancing now, amid the crowd of moving bodies.
Fisk grabs your chin and tilts it in Mattâs direction, just in time for you to see him bowing to another woman, kissing the back of her hand. Your eyes widen and you think, this canât be real.
âWhen I kill you,â Fisk says, âHeâll move on. Youâre easily replaceable, Mrs. Murdock.â
And then, in an instant, the woman with Matt pulls out a dagger and plunges it deeply into his abdomen. Itâs then that the other dancers, besides you, Fisk, Matt, and this mystery woman, disappear. Matt turns to you and falls to his knees, clutching his stomach.
He tries to crawl to you, blood seeping onto his hands and the beautiful ballroom floor. He yells your name, and the woman stabs him again from behind, and you watch as your husband dies. You hear him screaming, hear him yelling your name. But Wilson Fisk keeps you in place. You can do nothing but watch as Matt Murdock meets his end again, unable to save him. You start to scream, thrashing against Fisk, ready to claw your way to Matt.
You wake up screaming, the nightmare haunting you. A guard bangs on your door, yelling at you to keep it down.
It was just a nightmare, you tell yourself. Maybe Matt heard your screams.
Maybe heâs already dead.
You force yourself not to listen to the voice in your head that says that.
â˘Â â˘Â â˘
One day, Fisk visits again, only this time, Heâs covered in blood. That damn song is still playing.
You just stare. They have long since stopped tying you up, recognizing that you no longer have the energy to try and fight back. Â He has this sick grin on his face.
âGood evening, Mrs. Murdock.â You say nothing. âHave you been enjoying your stay with us?â
You glare.
âI hope Matt kills you when he gets here, because it will be a lot less painful for you if he does it instead of me.â
Mr. Fisk just laughs at this and tosses something at your feet. You get down off the chair to see what it is.
Your face goes pale with realization. You pick it up and slip it on your thumb, with it being too big for your other fingers. Mattâs wedding ring. You know itâs his, it has your name engraved in braille on the inside. How did he get this?
As if reading your mind, Fisk speaks again. âI took it off his body after I killed him.â
Your head shoots up to him. What did he say?
âNo.â You deny. âFuck off, I donâtâI donât believe you.â
âYour husband is dead, Mrs. Murdock. I killed him with my bare hands because he was stupid enough to come after you. Your friends will mourn you and Matt Murdock for a while, and the city will come to the realization that Daredevil did nothing but harm. I win, Mrs. Murdock.â
You feel tears start to fill your eyes, and you realize, no. He hasnât won because youâre still alive.
Maybe not for long, but you are.
You gather the rest of your energy and leap up, lunging at the large man covered in the man you loveâs blood. And thereâs a part of you that gets it. Okay, universe, you win. Most people donât get a second chance like the two of you did. And now heâs dead, and soon you will be too. You can at least try to kill Fisk.
But you barely get a scratch in, yelling and screaming obscenities at him, as John grabs your arms from behind pulling you away. Fisk laughs and shakes his head again.
âItâs been lovely knowing you, Mrs. Murdock. Iâm sorry youâll have to die, you had so much potential. John, when youâre done doing whatever youâd like to her, kill her.â You hear him say it, but youâre blinded by rage, by grief.
John laughs behind you and forces you back into the chair, tying you back up once more. He looks at you, enraged and grief stricken, and just shakes his head.
âYou and I are going to have a lot of fun.â
He leaves for a few minutes, and you realize this is the first time youâve been left alone in this room. You tug at the knots and realize that while John is a gifted torturer, heâs not much of a knot tier.
So you manage to wiggle out of the rope, approaching the table in front of you. You donât have much time. Okay, maybe you wonât be able to kill Fisk, but John will do. You take a golf club off the table in front of you and turn to the record player.
You begin to smash the thing in, angrily cursing at it as Frank Sinatraâs voice fades off into nothing. When the song ends, the lights turn off. And then, red flood lights turn on in their place.
A back up generator. Lovely. You think that your smashing of the record player couldnât possibly make the whole buildingâs power go off, but you donât really care at that moment.
Youâre tired. You wonât make it far, but you need to try. You grasp the club and open the door, being greeted with a man you donât recognize. You smack him in the face with the club hard enough for him to fall to the ground.
The red lighting adds an eerie tone to the hallways as you creep around, concussing various henchmen that Fisk has working for him. You donât mean to kill these ones, only John.
But youâre running out of stamina, peeking around corners. And thatâs when you see him. John is just standing there like he knows youâre there.
âCome out to play, Mrs. Murdock?â He calls, approaching the corner where you are waiting on the other side.
You focus on his footsteps, taking a swing around the corner when you know heâs close enough. You hear a sharp crack! As he falls, and you canât see the blood in this lighting. Good. You begin to hit his head in, sobs mixing with yelling. You hate him. You want him to die before youâre killed.
But you donât get the pleasure, because a pair of arms are pulling you off him, and you begin yelling.
âNo!â You yelp. âNo, Fuck you! Let go of me! Stop!â You think itâs another one of his goons, and you just want to be able to finish the job before you die. The figure forces you to drop the club. âPlease, stop, donât hurt meââ
But heâs saying your name and turning you around to see him. You know that voice.
âSweetheart, hey, itâs just meââ He pants, his hands going to your cheeks. âItâs me, Itâs just me. Iâve got you.â
And you canât believe your eyes.
âMatt..?â You whimper, not able to believe it. âNo, youâre dead, this has to beââ
And then, Matt does something he wouldnât do for anyone who wasnât his wife. He pulls off his helmet so you can see his face. Oh.
âIâm right here. Iâve got you.â He says softly, his thumb gently rubbing against your skin.
Thatâs when you start to sob, falling against him, no energy left to carry yourself. His arms wrap around you, and you say it again.
âHe told me you were dead..â
âI know.. Iâm sorry, I donât know how he got my ring but weâve gotta get you out of here.â He tells you.
Youâre so tired. Youâre slumping against him as you try to walk, the warmth radiating off his body just drawing you to sleep.
The last thing you hear before you fall asleep is Mattâs voice, begging you to stay awake.
â˘Â â˘Â â˘
You see flashes. Your parents, your dad. Nightmares of Fisk killing Karen, Foggy, Frank, and worst of all, Matt. You see Johnâs sickening grin on the body of spiders, and youâre chased by his cruel laughter.
But the dreams are filmier compared to whatâs happening around you. You know Claire shows up at some point, and youâre thankful to her. Karen sits next to you sometimes, petting your hair, or sometimes itâs Foggy, talking your ear off.
You have fever dreams of Frank in full military gear, tormenting you.
âNot so tough now, huh, girl?â He teases. âYou really thought youâd kill the big bad wolf? Solve all your boyfriendâs problems?â Â
You say to him, âHusband, Heâs my husband.â
â˘Â â˘Â â˘
Even in your dreams, where you were slashed and burned aches, and you long for the pain to end.
You wake up only once throughout these dreams, and itâs when Karen is playing music to try and calm you from your insistent nightmares.
Only one song snaps you out of it, and you hear it clear as day.
âFly me to the moon,â Sinatra sings, âLet me play among the stars,â
He only gets through a few more lines before youâre sitting up on the couch, screaming.
âNo! Stop, please!â You cry, and in an instant, Mattâs arms are around you. âMatt, please, donât let him hurt me, please! Please donât die, donât let him keep hurting me!â You beg, in a hazed, frenzied state.
âIâve got you, No oneâs going to hurt you..â
Karen turns off the music somewhere deep in the apartment.
âNo..â You begin to grow tired in his arms again. âMatty, please.. You canât die, please..â You whimper out, continuing to mumble out pleads as you fall back into your weird dream state.
â˘Â â˘Â â˘
You really wake up two days later. Mattâs hand is clasped over yours, and heâs just.. Sitting on the floor next to the couch, praying into your clasped hands.
Praying for what, you donât know.
Your body aches. But something in you tells you youâre safe.
âMattâŚ?â You whisper gently, and his head shoots up.
âHey..â He says softly, one hand leaving yours, coming up to brush your hair out of your face. âThere she is..â
âYouâre alive..â
He seems a little concerned you still had some doubts about this.
âI am. Fisk lied to you.. He never even touched me.â You nod.
âDid I kill him? The man you found me..â
âNo. Heâs just in a coma, I checked. Heâll be brought to justice.â
âI only wanted him dead when I thought you were too..â Because really, you would have nothing if Matt wasnât there. Nothing to live for. When he was blipped away, you had the hardest time readjusting to life. Now you know if he died again, youâd probably go off the rails.
No love story is saved more than once. You used up all your luck. Now it will be doomed if heâs ever killed again.
âI know.â He said gently.
âHow long have I been out? How long was I in there?â
âA week, and then you were out for four days here. They got you good, baby..â He says gently. âIâm sorry I didnât find you earlier.â
You frown softly.
âYou did find me though. Thatâs all that really matters anymore.â You know youâll be nursing scars for a long time. Physical or not.
âStill..â He said gently, and he brings your hand up to kiss it gently. âAnd Iâm sorry I told you to leave that night. I was just upset, but this past week and half.. I feel like Iâve been going crazy without you. No matter how mad at you I am, I never want to spend another night without holding you. Knowing that you could have beenâŚâ His voice breaks, and he just sighs, taking a moment to lean his head on your hand. âI love you, so much.â He kisses your palm again.
How are you so tired again? All youâve done is talk to him, but it feels like you just ran a marathon.
âI love you. Itâs why I married you. Because you and I, we were always meant to be with each other. No matter what.â
He smiles weakly and reaches over to the coffee table to grab something. He slips it on your finger and for the first time in over a week, your wedding ring is back where it belongs. You see Matt is wearing his. Your Matt. Your husband. The only one you were ever meant to be with.
âDid Claire patch me up? I remember her being here..â He nods softly.
âYeah, we.. we really owe her one. She was a huge help..â
âKaren and Foggy were here⌠And Frank?â
âNo, no, Frankâs still in Illinois, I think?â You nod softly. âYou were mumbling to him, though. I heard you⌠you were telling him you had a husband.â
You would laugh if it didnât hurt.
âHe called you my boyfriend. I had to correct him.â You grin.
âThatâs my girl.â He hums. Matt gently lifts you so you can sit up and drink some water. Then, he climbs onto the couch and brings you close. His arms wrap around your freshly wounded skin and you have a rare moment of gratefulness for his blindness.
You sit in silence for a while.
âDo you want to talk about it?â he asks gently.
You think about it all. The torture, the cuts, burns, the small room. Fiskâs laughter, Johnâs grin. But something sticks out to you.
âFisk said I was just like him.â
âWhat?â
âWe.. We grew up similar, Matt, I mean.. What if heâs right? What if the only thing separating him and I is one bad move?â
Your husband frowns and shakes his head.
âSweetheart, you are the.. the most amazing person Iâve ever met. Youâre the complete antithesis of Wilson Fisk. Yeah, you grew up like him, but youâre living proof that you donât have to go down the path he did just because of his background. You and I both know that there will never be a world where you end up like him. Especially not with me.â
You find comfort with his words. Not only did you make every choice not to be like Fisk, but you mustâve also made all the right decisions if in the end, you ended up with Matt. Oh, it wonât be easy, you know that for sure. Youâll never be able to listen to Frank Sinatra, and your upcoming nights are filled with nightmares and hauntings.
But one day youâll be okay. One day Youâll be able to sit in the silence without thinking about it. One day youâll get the image of dead Matt out of your head. Youâve spent many nights wondering about who will go first, you or him.
And then you realize the best-case scenario is that the two of you die at the same time, never living another moment without each other.
How would there ever be a world where you and your husband werenât with each other, even just for a moment?
