roleplay account for Jareth from Labyrinth (1986) as written by Walden // private. independent. selective. // original character, alternate universe, & multiverse friendly
The sea had not stopped screaming all day.
Canvas snapped overhead in the bitter wind, ropes groaned, boots thundered across wet planks, and somewhere below deck two sailors were still shouting at one another over a spilled ration barrel. Every sound felt sharper to James by the hour, driven straight into an already pounding head.
“Admiral’s whelp.”
The insult had followed him from dawn watch to supper.
Some of the older officers muttered it under their breath when they thought he could not hear. Others made certain he could. One had shoulder-checked him hard enough against the mast to bruise. Another had laughed when James dropped a navigation chart after nearly twenty hours awake.
And the superiors? They were worse!
Because if James was the admiral’s son, then he ought to be perfect. Not merely good. Perfect. One mistake during drill and the Lieutenant had torn into him before the entire deck.
“Your father commands half the bloody fleet and this is the standard you present?”
As though James himself had requested the name Norrington and didn't already feel it hanging around his neck like a noose.
By the time night settled over the ship, James could scarcely breathe around the tightness in his chest.
He sat curled miserably beside a stack of old crates near the gun deck, knees drawn up beneath the oversized navy coat hanging from his narrow shoulders. 14 years old and already exhausted down to the bone. His palms still stung from rope burns. Salt dried against his face where seawater and a few humiliating tears had long since gone cold.
James pressed his forehead against folded arms and shut his eyes hard.
He wanted away.
Away from the endless sea.
Away from the officers.
Away from the boys who sneered at him.
Away from the crushing disappointment in every adult face he met.
And then, as he did whenever he felt at his lowest, he tried to find comfort in the memory of his mothers voice and soft candlelight. The smell of lavender. And a story told to a lonely six-year-old curled beneath blankets while rain tapped gently at the windows.
The Labyrinth.
The Goblin King.
A place where unwanted children vanished if someone wished it of them hard enough.
At six, he had thought it magical but at 14 ( Almost 15 now! tyvm ), exhausted and heartsick aboard a warship in the middle of nowhere, it sounded like salvation.
James laughed once under his breath tired and miserable. “Ridiculous,” he muttered, though his voice trembled.
Still… he wondered if the unwanted child... could wish themselves away instead?
He lifted his head slightly, staring out toward the black stretch of ocean beyond the gun ports. “I wish…” His throat tightened. “I wish the goblins would come and take me away... Right now.”
The ship creaked. Somewhere above deck, thunder rolled and for just the briefest moment... James could have sworn he heard laughter that did not belong to anyone aboard the vessel.
@glamglitterandgoblins
Goblins have never been known to be subtle creatures. When they are irritated, they are irritated. When they are amused, they are amused.
And when they are brought into focus...
First, there is one hissed laugh.. then, from a different direction, a stifled cackle. A crate lid opens and then slams shut.
Lightning flashes and thunder rumbles.
The sky begins to darken to almost the blackness of night... and unsettled waves to strike against the ship.
"He's too old!" protests one crackly voice.
"But he said his right words!" hisses another.
"Ain't no one said 'ow old!"
"Let the King decide!"
The delight becomes more audible, and a chorus of terrible little voices raises into near frenzy, the entire room seeming to come alive with shadows and forms that seem to move only at the edges of periphery.
Crates and barrels begin to open and close. A previously coiled line begins to shuffle across the deck almost as a serpent. Cannonballs begin to roll across the floors, and the cannons shift as though moved by seas far more rough than those beyond the ship.
"THE KING WILL DECIDE!"
And then, the entire world plunges into total darkness...

Concept of home and family
Most of what I pull from here can be found in the Labyrinth: Coronation graphic novels.
Jareth’s idea of family is perhaps a bit… strange. There’s a lot of background stuff that goes into this, and––to my knowledge––can only be found in the graphic novels mentioned above, but I’ll summarize. [ WARNING: Spoilers for the graphic novels ahead. ]
Jareth was sent away to the goblins (and the elderly Owl King) by his biological father, Albert. Now, his father was an utter sonuvabitch. Entitled and under the obligations of his own father, Albert was summoned back from abroad under threat of being disowned. As such, he abandoned the mother of his child (not wife) and intended to send Jareth away to an orphanage. Jareth’s mother––Maria––took off with the child, threatening to ruin Albert. Albert then proceeded to wish Jareth away to the goblins. Maria, determined to save her child, struck a bargain with the Owl King, much as Sarah did for Toby.
Maria was clever and determined to save her son, and she got quite far along. Far enough the that Owl King cheated and used Albert’s memories to create a construct. He used that to trap Maria––as Jareth does with Sarah and the peach––and the Albert-construct (who turned out to be only the best parts of Albert) was tasked with killing her. Instead, he was moved by love and chose to save her and ‘their’ son.
Though Maria failed to reach Jareth in time, she did save him from the Owl King’s plans––to siphon Jareth’s youth to make himself more powerful. Together, Maria and the Albert-construct raised Jareth in a sort of… time divergence? Like a separate place of the main timeline. I say this not because it’s stated outright but because it seems implied that they raised Jareth together, yet a goblin remarks that Jareth returned––fully formed and ready to rule––not long after Maria and the baby disappeared.
So, in my canon, he has had a loving if somewhat odd family environment, mostly in a separate ‘world’ created by Maria that was a facsimile of the life she and actual Albert had lived before everything fell apart.
To Jareth, however, while his parents were home, he never really felt that this Venetian replica was his home, and despite being bound to the Labyrinth––because his mother didn’t reach him in time––he doesn’t necessarily feel that is a home either. It’s a responsibility, something to which he’s bound.
The actual summary, because that was more long-winded than I intended:
Jareth considers family as his mother and construct-father. He still rather resents his ACTUAL biological father. (He perhaps considers one of the goblins so after the novel because he had cared for and protected a defenseless baby Jareth.) He does not have a solid sense of home, however, beyond the connection with his parents. He does crave something more than that in a lot of ways, but he also can’t say exactly what that something more is.

roleplay account for Jareth from Labyrinth (1986) as written by Walden // private. independent. selective. // original character, alternate universe, & multiverse friendly
benevolentgodloki:
Loki only seems to bask in his manners being called into question. He’s perfected polite rudeness to an art. “Must we?” he toys, ever grinning but with a hint of the malicious. “Yours was the assumption I was actually asking rather than simply wondering. Now I know there is someone. Could it be the stories are true?”
All he has to go on is what he has read about Jareth. Yet, as with the myths of Loki, therein must lie a certain amount of truth.
“How much you presume of so l i t t l e …”
A beat and then he laughs, the sound sudden and sharp like shattered glass. His mismatched gaze remains quite settled on the other, and he regards him with wry amusement. Whether it is feigned or unfeigned would be anyone’s guess.
“Though, now I must wonder exactly what stories it is that you have heard or read of me to be able to so confidently reach such a conclusion.”
benevolentgodloki:
The god paces quietly in parallel with Jareth, goblins chittering nervously and backing away as he nears. “I see.” He averts his gaze seemingly in thought though his posture suggests he’s completely alert to everything around him.
“And what happens now? Are you to extend an invitation to Thor to run your maze to come to my aid? Or offer him everything he could desire to ensure I remain?”
“Ah, I see what’s happened. Someone’s been reading,” he remarks with what could only be amusement, though how sharp his mismatched gaze remains as he watches the other pace to and fro, alert and aware.
“How-ever shocking it may be, it is of little consequence to me. You’re far too old to be made into a goblin, and I’ve not the slightest idea what other use you might serve in my kingdom. Why should I have to do anything? Do your people not have a means by which to travel the realms? By all means, let your brother come to your rescue.”
He shrugs, completely unconcerned.
“… Or perhaps he leaves you. Who’s to say?”
Jareth at the goblins: I'm not drunk, you're just blurry.
Anna Akhmatova, Selected Poems
benevolentgodloki:
Oh, now this is more like it. It’s the territory that Loki thrives in, finding what makes others tick and dancing in and around it. Like the daring crow plucks the tail of the lion, he aims to distract, to learn, and to play.
“Not the way I see it. You’re so keen to discuss the topic, one can’t help but wonder who’s been yanking your chain. Or.. not been yanking it.”
“How very c r u d e ,” Jareth says, tutting in disapproval though there is a sharp little laugh all the same, whether from amusement or surprise is unclear. What cheek this one has. Not only to turn the whole matter around on him like that but then to push his advantage.
“ H o n e s t l y , I would expect better manners of a prince. Have you considered that perhaps I’m simply not one to kiss and tell, in a manner of speaking? One of us must have some couth.”
