#FunFactFriday! #DidYouKnow that green #morayeels aren't actually green? They get their green appearance from a layer of mucus that covers their skin. This slimy substance contains various toxins, including one which destroys red blood cells. Secreting this mucus helps to ward off predators, as well as protect against bacteria and parasites. The goo also dramatically changes the creature's appearance. #Greenmorays are actually a rather drab shade of brown, but the gunk’s yellowish tint gives them more vibrant coloring. Due to the recent (and rather substantial) coronal mass ejection (CME) emitted from the Sun, the Aurora borealis was predicted to be visible much further south than usual this evening. Some projections even showed possible visibility as far south as north of Knoxville, so we took a trip out to #NorrisDamStatePark to look for the northern lights. Unfortunately we didn't have any luck (although I kind of doubted we would). #DidYouKnow traditionally, September’s #fullmoon is always called the Harvest Moon, but not this time around. Since the #HarvestMoon is always the full moon that arrives closest to the #fallequinox (September 22), the full moon on October 5 will get the iconic title. September’s full moon, instead, has been deemed the #CornMoon. All of the models are in agreement and show the hurricane trending this direction. This is good news for the Gulf Coast however depending on just how far east it tracks, the East coast is still included in some of the forecast tracks. This tiny, five-acre island is on the National Register of Historical Places and served as home base for railroad workers during the erection of the final installment of Henry M. Flagler's Key West Extension of the Florida East Coast Railway (aka, the #OldSevenMileBridge). This railway made the Keys accessible from mainland #Florida, and in Flagler's day it was considered a great engineering feat. Pigeon Key is accessible by ferry boat, which departs from the #PigeonKeyVisitorCenter on Knights Key daily at 10:00am, 12:00pm, and 2:00pm.
