Dracula Daily Holidays (so far)

Here are some holidays the fandom has latched onto as we’ve been reading Dracula Daily/ listening to re:Dracula.

With this list I’m trying to capture the moments that get talked about the most or elicit the biggest reactions (admittedly, almost every entry has an iconic line or moment.)

Today's Daily Dracula is another example of how I think a lot of the film adaptations have failed to capture the true horror of Dracula because this scene is SO upsetting. It is quiet and cruel in such a beautiful way.

Harker believes he has successfully squirreled out a few letters to a camp of travelers who will post them for him.

Then our man the Count comes in with the letters and is so expertly and subtly impressing upon Harker just how fucked he is, just how little power Harker has. This, as though past moments haven't been, is the time at which I would lose ALL hope.

Stoker ends the chapter with another banger line:

"Despair has its own calms."

In honor of "Foul Bauble of Man's Vanity" day I'm trying to recall other iconic lines and phrases that made people go wild during the initial Dracula Daily years. I remember of course "lizard fashion", "train fiend" and "for your mother's sake", but are there any others I'm forgetting?

This was evidently the portion of the castle occupied by the ladies in bygone days, for the furniture had more air of comfort than any I had seen.

Jonathan finding more comfort in the ladies' room of the castle, and telling how he hates the other rooms because of Dracula's lingering presence is really a different beat; Jonathan is far more aligned with the gothic feminine than the gothic masculine. The ladies portion of the castle he found is not only a place of rest, but also it's where he can hide from Dracula's patriarchal figure.

Coincidental or not, the fact that Jonathan is now using tactics to escape from Dracula's masculine presence, and decided that a ladies room was the safest option he could find is a detail that should not be overlooked. Dracula has made it very clear that he can keep crossing the line with Jonathan's boundaries since he is his superior in any aspect of their current dynamic. Superior as his boss to employee, superior as his noble to working class, superior as his older masculine figure to younger feminine character. Jonathan cannot "win" against the Count in a traditional masculine manner since it's simply not a trait in his characterization, and he knows very well that doing something in that line of manner would end up with him dead.

Moreover, there isn't a single hint of irony or mockery towards the ladies room nor the feminity of the scene, everything that Jonathan says is truthful, and he embraces it far more. Jonathan doesn't find it shameful to identify with fair ladies of years past, nor tries to excuse his thoughts to save his "masculinity" at the eyes of the reader, it's all written in modest honesty.

when looking at the ways dracula as an original text differ with the experience of dracula daily, these letters between mina and lucy is where the differences first arise. if you read the book as published by bram stoker, you finish the johnathan in the castle arc before flashing a bit backwards into the letters to set up the whitby arc. with the dracula daily format, we leave johnathan right as he realizes that he is trapped and actively in danger to see his loved ones completely unaware of the danger he's in. the contrast here, while less straightforward from a plot standpoint, heightens the horror of the castle. there is no one coming to his rescue, and those who know of his absence suspect nothing yet.

Goddamn every time I listen to / read the May 5th entry of Dracula, I'm just reminded of how damn good the horror is. The rising tension, the way Jonathan knows there's danger but can't even begin to think about doing anything about it, the way the other passengers know what doom he's getting into and are so desperate to see him avoid it, the terror of the ride through the forest with the wolves all around, the music, audio effects, and the performances in Re: Dracula...

It's genuinely scary! Three days in and we're fully in a horror novel! The dead travel fast!
