Coming less than a week after the sorrowful mourning of Tisha b’Av (on the 9th of Av), Tu b’Av is a Jewish holiday of love. Tu b’Av occurs on a full moon, as the Hebrew calendar is lunar. Linking the full moon with love, fertility, and romance is common in ancient cultures. The first mention of Tu b’Av is in the Mishna (Taanit), where it says, “There were no better days for the people of Israel than the Fifteenth of Av and Yom Kippur, since on these days the daughters of Jerusalem go out dressed in white and dance in the vineyards. You know, the Elon Husk recklessly cutting so many jobs from the federal government has really reminded me of just how much the government does.

A lot of people ask “what has the government ever done for me?” and it turns out that well until like two weeks ago when the Husk cut so many people from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau it was making companies that charged you random illegal charges refund you without you even noticing and suing companies that break the law

Many days now I see massive cuts have been made at some federal agency I didn’t know existed and I’m like man. The government was doing some really good work. Was. Hopefully will be again soon. A lot of these lawsuits and protests are working. A lot of park rangers were re-hired because of public outrage.

It is very revealing when sex-negative Puritans accuse a person of pedophilia simply for dating a person who is short, or who looks vaguely young... they conceive of the problem being the wrong kind of attraction, rather than the exploitation of power.

and once you believe attraction itself can be inherently damaging, it is not a leap to claim that a person cannot ever fantasize or masturbate to a friend without their consent, for example, or even just that being openly gay is child abuse/grooming. it is a reactionary position. but you see lots of queer people believing in some form of it.

people say non-passing trans men get treated like defective women and that's true but so do passing trans men. you can look fully like a man with a beard, flat chest. even a phalloplasty and if one transphobic jerk in your life knows you are trans they will NEVER address you as a man even if you are indistinguishable from a cis man. you can look like a whole ass lumberjack and still get introduced as somebody's daughter. for most, the only way to be seen and acknowledged as a man is full and total stealth, keeping your trans identity a secret, cutting out anyone in you life that knows you used to be a woman. and that's not a good thing. we talk about pride as being fully and unabashedly ourselves, and there is no pride in hiding your trans identity and pretending to be cis just so you can have respect and be treated like a man

Nauseating, by the way, just how prevalent abstinence-only ideology seems to have completely washed through people like. It's just common now for some shithead to show up like "you think it's normal for teenagers to watch porn? 😬" Yeah actually it is one of the most historically well-understood axioms of teenagers that they are horny all the time because of puberty. They're literally in the process of sexual development, their bodies are building and testing the hardware for sex.

Of course every person is different and there's a full spectrum of sex drive among teenagers, but if you're seriously expecting most teenagers not to masturbate until they turn 18 you are living in a fantasy. Sex isn't evil!!!!!! Sex isn't damaging!!! Sex is not toxic or harmful!!! Sex is just sex, and whether or not something constitutes sexual abuse or sexual harm has more to do with what makes something abusive or harmful, and little to do with how sexual it is.

Also, the idea that children seeing porn is how sexual abuse happens is fully based on gut-disgust reactions and has genuinely nothing to do with the realities of the factors that actually give rise to sexual abuse. Of course it should not be possible or at least likely for kids to just accidentally stumble into porn, but that's true in general; nobody wants to be jumpscared with porn when they're trying to do some other shit. If some non-adult is out there seeking out sexual materials, all that matters is that they're keeping it to themselves and not trying to engage strangers online about it, and that they have a solid foundation of sexual education and media literacy on which to make smart, healthy decisions while doing so.

Sexual development, like all development, happens over time, and starts before adulthood. We need to accomodate the reality that exists, no matter how uncomfortable that reality is. Trying to push to make it impossible for teenagers to see porn is just divorced from reality, and the basis for trying to do so is anti-science. Figure out how to deal with it.
