Snow Day Gothic

Class is cancelled because of snow. Or so they say.

You’ve lived this day before.

Your peers post the announcement of the cancellation on their social media. On the surface it is a celebration, when deep down you know it is a warning.

There’s a knock on the door. No one’s there when you open it, and no footprints in the snow.

You don’t drive. The ones who skid off the road are never seen again.

The snowmen seem to appear out of nowhere. You haven’t seen anybody outside to build them. They move when you aren’t looking.

The neighborhood children sled down the hill. Only some of them come back up.

You hear the shoveling of snow, but none of it has been cleared.

The fireplace crackles. You don’t remember turning it on.

You tell your friends that you love snowdays. “They’re cozy” you say, “I like watching the snow fall while I’m warm in the house”. You’re really just too afraid of what is waiting for you outside.

You hear a car slip on the ice on the road behind your house. You know they will be feasted on.

This snow is just like every other, so why was class cancelled today?

What’s out there? You’re tempted to find out.

There’s a snowman in your yard. Who built it? You couldn’t have. You decide to stay inside.

The weather is the same the next day, but class is in session. They must have left.

How To: See All Your Published Posts That Got Flagged

Hi Tumblr, I’m back with another script after last night. This time it comes with actual instructions :P I recorded a demo video of the script running. It’s available here: https://flight-of-the-felix.tumblr.com/post/180811718885/demo-for-the-tumblr-flagging-tester

For those familiar with Tampermonkey/Greasemonkey, this is a known process. If not, follow these steps:

1. Install the tampermonkey browser extension via the official site. 2. Click the toolbar button, press Dashboard. 3. From the Dashboard, press the plus sign in the horizontal toolbar. 4. Replace all text in the editor with the code of the script, available here: https://gist.githubusercontent.com/boisei0/2ea7d7145d04a1cc5864d316271d09fd/raw/tumblr_flagging_score_checker.js 5. Click File -> Save. The script should now enable itself. 6. Close the tab with the editor. 7. Open a new tab with the Tumblr dashboard: https://www.tumblr.com/dashboard and wait until the script is fully loaded and the black-with-white box is displayed. 8. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Since this script will now run every time you open the tumblr dashboard, disable it again after usage: With the dashboard open, click the toolbar button for Tampermonkey. Now click the switch to disable the “tumblr score checker 2.0” again. In case of problems, click the tampermonkey button, and ask if there are updates.

Common problems and how to ask for help

Q: You keep getting an error message saying you are rate limited. A: Click the tampermonkey button, click Dashboard, and click the flagging script in the list. Around line 16 you find the following: const debug = false; const debugFlag = -1; Replace false with true, and replace -1 with 3. Save the script, and reload the tumblr dashboard. If you’re on Mac with Chrome, do command+option+J, Windows with Chrome ctrl+shift+J, Mac with Firefox command+shift+J, Windows with Firefox ctrl+shift+J. (Rest I don’t know from mind, look up “developer console YourBrowser” on google to get the shortcut). If you run XKit you’re going to see a lot of spam first, scroll down to the end and take a screnshot of the last couple lines you see. It should be 2 numbers. The first is the total amount of posts, the second the number of requests needed to look at every post listed. Check if the number of posts is indeed correct, and take a screenshot of the output. Send it to me in DM, and I’ll look along with you for a way to fix this.

Q: Your blogs are not getting listed, or twice. A: Refresh the page and try again. If it persists, look at the previous question and change the -1 to 1 instead. Follow the rest of the steps and send me a screenshot in DM. I’ve seen this before, but it appears to only randomly happen and I haven’t managed to solve this yet.

Should I use this?

As for those wondering about “what am I going to run on my tumblr, is it even save?”, if you would like to feel free to check the code, but what it does is get the so called “form key” from the page (tumblr uses it internally to communicate between pages, e.g. xkit uses it too). Next, this form key is used in combination with the part of the server that loads blogs in the sidebar view. The loading code returned by the server has information about whether or not posts are flagged, and a lot of extra information.

Many people in the comments are saying “trauma”, but this is actually a very normal occurrence. It’s called Childhood Amnesia, and it’s a process which, as the brain reorganizes itself for cognitive thought that is developed in late childhood, it changes the Accessibility of those memories during recall. Many childhood memories are available to the person, but they will not be remembered during regular recall activity, you have to “trick” your brain into remembering with different tactics.

This is because there are two parts to memories - their encoding and their recall. The encoding determines their availability, their recall determines their accessibility. The reason why trauma memory and childhood amnesia are different is in this distinction. Trauma memory is often encoded differently, bypassing to the limbic system where it is stored as intrinsic memory. It can’t be recalled because it was never encoded. Childhood amnesia, however, seems to indicate that the memories are encoded, but we lose access to them as we age. This is most likely due to the development of brain structures that fundamentally change our encoding and recall of memory as we get older.

This is an important distinction, because trauma memory is “stored in the body”, i.e. you get triggers that send your body into a cascade of uncontrollable feelings, sensations and reactions. Whereas childhood memories won’t generally do that, they are just recalled at odd times with odd associations.

So the new She-Ra cartoon is all the rage, what relevant piece could I focus on to mine that algorithm? Why a slavish classic-style He-Man design specially based on an old meme, of course! Hey, it’s just how it worked out, Super 7’s release of ‘Laughing Prince Adam’ made its way to my doorstep last week, and now everyone’s talking about Swords of Power and Hordaks and stuff. Synergy!

Seriously though, this is a pretty amazing thing they made regardless. Mattel and their partners haven’t shied away from gag releases like this before, of course, from proper toys of Wonder Bread He-Man to Robot Chicken tie-in Mo-Larr. So maybe a plastic immortalization of this one on-blonde was only a matter of time. How hard they committed to it, of course, sells it even further.

The colors are just glorious, accurately recreating the video version’s poppin’ pink vest and oddly-orange skin-tone, and he even comes with a hot-pink version of the sword for kicks (which he can store on his back!). The new ‘laughing’ headsculpt is a delight too; it’s the only face this toy has, so you’re basically encouraged to pose him in any utterly un-serious way to you can think of for maximum Youtube-poop hilarity. It works, this toy’s just fun ‘n’ goofy to look at.

Completing the picture is the backdrop. The whole box is actually done up in this wildly reflective glittery deco, but the background comes out to let you fully realize that legendary head-bop. It’s holographic sparkles actually photograph really interestingly too, letting you get some choice candid shots of the viral video sensation.

Yes, Super 7 perhaps overcharged you for a basic action figure of an ancient internet meme, but it’s absolutely what you knew you were getting going in. The toy’s fun to have, and the sort of thing even people who don’t go in for a lot of He-Man toys (hello!) might want. God knows it feels more timeless and caringly-crafted than, like, those lolcats toys Hasbro’s gonna start pumping out next year.

Someone done a stop-motion movie with this thing yet?
