I wrote Florida off a long time ago. Im not independant enough to avoid it, though. So this go-around I think Ive learned a lesson in both tolerance and reluctance. I have not so fond memories of walking home from school thinking something like 'fuck this fucking heat!!' Its a thought I kept with me during the thick of my last Iowan winter. Maybe 50 or 60 or 70 years ago when this damn swamp was some wild abyss. An open scab crawling with ospreys and alligators. It would be cooler and interesting. But I can hardly stand the oppulance of it all now. 'Los Angeles, Im yours' by The Decemberists kind of sums up my bitterness. If I ever become a musician Ill write something along the lines of 'Orlando, Im yours, despite my best to avoid this festering swamp'.

they’re asking you to disclose if you’re transgender. legally, they can’t ask or consider someone’s gender in hiring someone, so they get around it by giving you the option of telling them yourself. if you “volunteer” the information, that’s legal.

its like when they try to figure out if you’re poor by asking if you have “reliable transportation,” hoping that ppl will explain that they dont have a car without actually being asked. things like that.

its a scummy thing to do, especially in this case where theyre presenting it like a “diversity” thing.

My managers have personally told people that anyone who puts anything like that outside of just “male or female” gets their application tossed immediately. Btw if an interviewer asks if you have reliable transportation, don’t say anything but “yes I do” that’s it!!!!! Don’t say another word don’t say you take the bus or walk or bike or get rides or uber don’t say anything!!!!! Just say yes and that is it they cannot require any sort of proof of transportation.

In the Holocaust Museum in DC, they have a room just for the shoes and hair of the victims. It’s really startling to see it so up close since it makes you realize the sheer scale of this. The pile of hair in the museum weighs several tons, and bear in mind that this several ton pile of hair is only but a small fraction of all of the horrible things found in the camps.

The above are photos I took at Auschwitz. The shoes and suitcases were each encased in a hallway - kept behind glass on both sides. And again comprise only a fraction of what the Nazis took.

Now the significance of these collections can not be understated or undermined, the horrors of the Holocaust, the Shoah, are embodied in these piles of stolen clothing and cases.

We look at them and recoil, promising that we’ll never forget and yet the systematic slaughter of human beings continues around the world.

In different places, for different reasons. Who didn’t learn the lesson? Who still needs to be reached? Who needs to be protected?

Do not forget. Remember and react. Radical evil is not a memory of the past, it is a present and continuous force.
