it’s “get a kiss from your teacher” day
rocky’s big brain plan to get more smooches backfired spectacularly

my other PHM art here
At some point on the journey back to Erid, Rocky gets around to asking Grace exactly why he was so mesmerised by seeing the astrophage in the Petrova line.
Grace describes it as best he can, but all he can really manage to get across to Rocky is that he was surrounded by small floating lights.
Later on, Grace is talking about the stars and how important they've been to human cultures for millennia. “What do the stars look like, question?” Rocky wants to know.
Oh, y'know, they're a bunch of small floating lights.
There's a disco ball on the Hail Mary. Grace says it's there because it “makes me happy”. “How does it make Grace happy, question?” Rocky wants to know.
Oh, it creates the illusion that he's surrounded by small floating lights.
Rocky begins to do some research.
Glitter: a substance invented by humans to make things look like they're covered in small lights.
Human jewellery: mostly involves gemstones or polished metals, designed to reflect small lights.
Christmas lights. Candles. Lanterns. Fireworks. Glowsticks. Glow in the dark paint. Rocky is beginning to notice a pattern here, statement.
It takes Grace a fucking while after getting to Erid to notice that a lot of the gifts he's receiving from grateful Eridians are either a) sparkly, b) incredibly shiny, or c) fitted with lights.
While the last one is obviously a concession for his human light sense, he's confused about the former two. Are Eridian materials usually this shiny? Is there some quality about sparkly or highly polished surfaces that makes them sound better? Or is there something about Eridian geology/metallurgy that makes their materials like this?
He asks Rocky about it.
“Simple. I tell people humans like lots of small lights. Humans are easy to make happy.”
Grace kind of wants to protest that humans are much more complicated than that.
But honestly… it fucking works. Like yeah the polished gemstones, shiny metals and glittery rocks are beautiful. Yes those Christmas lights you put up around the house did markedly improve my mental health, Rocky. Thank you, I hate it.
Grace spends a lot of time trying not to think about whether his species' urge to explore the cosmos (that saved their planet and nearly killed him several times) is tied to the same instinct that made his students like glitter gel pens.

I feel so insane about ai. I've had face-to-face conversations with people who use it for therapy, who use it to calculate the safety of pill interactions, who use it for all their emails and grant applications and legal documents and academic papers and finance sheets and for every single question they have about the world, and if you tell them about the ecological costs they just laugh and say "I guess I've used a lot of water." and I've been in multiple gatherings of 10+ people where I'm THE ONLY PERSON who doesn't use chatgpt. it's turning me into a ranting raving pariah, because how don't you people see??? why don't you understand??????? this bullshit didn't exist five years ago, you absolutely do not need it, and it is destroying everything
my friend just had an art show and they were communicating with the gallerist over email. They could clearly tell that the gallerist was using AI to respond to their emails, but just rolled their eyes and moved on.
and then on the day of the show, my friend asks, "where is the camera I requested?"
gallerist: "you didn't request a camera"
my friend: "I did, and you confirmed that you would have one here."
gallerist: "that isn't true."
and then she proceeded to pull up the email thread, and my friend could see that every single email they had sent had been summarized by AI, and that the gallerist had then had AI write a response to them based on the AI summary, and that the AI had detected that they needed a camera, and confirmed on behalf of the gallerist that they would bring a camera, but because the gallerist had offloaded the work of actually reading and responding, she simply hadn't actually made any note of it herself, therefore didn't bring it, nor did she even know one was needed.
so my friend had done all of this communication about their needs and expectations to be able to make the show possible, and the person whose job it was to read that information and get it done had simply.... not read the information and not done it. because AI.
Now imagine being a teacher, fighting all the lazy students, who are in the midst of puberty and who can't think beyond their own noses. How hard you must fight against ChatGPT, Google translate and so on. Having to build in traps, so the students can't just copy paste. Have to have them write on paper with a pen and ask for permission to go online to use the word book (because - of course we don't have those physically anymore) because otherwise you can't figure out if they are actually able to write something in German or if they are just good at copy-pasting from Google translate (thank God they are sometimes so 'stupid' that they turn in their essay in 'Dutch' (which looks a bit like 'Tysk' ('German' in Danish). At that was the fight I had 3 years ago before I retired as a teacher. Now......think a bit forward. Your doctor, dentist, lawyer, surgeon, engineers etc used ChatGPT and other AI to pas their exams!!! We are doomed!
I think there's a great chance the existence of mirrors/reflective surfaces silently fucks Rocky up.
Like, Grace is in the bathroom, shaving, the curtain pulled to the side and suddenly he stops and says "stop touching my stuff". Rocky, frozen, somewhere behind him, can't fathom how Grace sensed that. He was so quiet. The razor is so loud. Grace's still facing away from him. What the fuck.
Grace repairing some panel or other and asks for a tool. Without even turning around, he says "no, not that one, the one to its left". Rocky's like are you shitting me. I know for a fact your hearing is ass. You can only see in one direction and I'm not in it!! What?!

Grace looking at Rocky Project Hail Mary (2026) dir. Phil Lord, Chris Miller — deleted scene
Eridians must be absolutely amazed that Grace can be woken up before his sleep cycle is finished. They take advantage of this and fit the biodome's bedroom with a remotely-triggered alarm system, so if something ever goes wrong with the life support systems while Grace is asleep, they can wake him up and have him move to safety. But, being that their sleep is more like a deep dormancy, they WAY overestimate what it takes to forcibly wake someone up.
The first time they have to use it (over something stupid like a tiny ammonia leak), Grace wakes up to like three different foghorns and a hundred camera flashes going off at once and is like HOLY GEEZ THE APOCALYPSE IS UPON US
(eta if someone with art talent wants to make this a proper eridian welcoming committee comic please do!)
RIP Rocky’s project
Grace Rocky save stars.
Editing easter eggs in the deleted scenes
I noticed a shot in the deleted scenes where one of the support struts of Rocky's puppet was still visible. So then I went looking for more and I found lots of other fun unedited or partially-edited parts.
Here are various rough edits to Armando where there are wires visible and/or bits of the background phasing through the foreground:
In this one you can see a person's hand moving the arm on the right:
And this completely unedited shot features Two Whole-Ass People making him dance with Grace:
Then there are a few shots where the zero-G rig is partially visible, or there's obvious blurring where it's been roughly removed:
There are two moments where we see the centrifugal lighting moving outside the ship:
And finally lots of hands and struts moving Rocky's arms around:
lets be silly at each other

GO3 but it starts out with Asa and Anthony. (WAIT HEAR ME OUT FIRST)
It starts with Asanthony, and we the audience are very confused. Who are these guys? Why are they human? But as Asa and Anthony go about their days (with a plot problem of their own), they keep finding inconguencies and things that don’t feel like they belong to them. Or this version of them at least.
Memories come back to them bit by bit. We the audience slowly piece together vignettes of a story— Crowley and Anthony were trying to solve the destruction of the world. The second coming happened. Michael went apeshit. God offered them an ultimatum.
Asa and Anthony realized that they are husks of other people beings and that life was taken from them. Using the bits of memory and free will that they have they piece together who they were, and they remember an ultimatum they were given— live as humans. If they can find each other and remember who they were and choose using their free will to return to that life, they can have their old life back.
Maybe. Idk. Half-baked idea. I still hate GO3
