yay apple post!! i know lots about apples :)
as i recall, there are genuinely >100 of variations of apples. (edit: theres allegedly over 7,000. (source @ bottom)
in school in the US (i remember learing this in kindergarten, so around 5-6 yrs old) we learned about the (only half-true) story johnny appleseed (né john chapman) who actively worked to plant like ... as many apple trees as possible in as far-reaching an area they could. & he did this by travelling on food aaaalllll over the midwest/east coast scattering the seeds. and i think it was bc he just thought they were rly good so he wanted everyone to have some? idk. (also he wore a hat that was either made of raccoon pelt/fur, or perhaps a pot made for boiling soup, but i dont remember.)
also we learned (not in kindergarten) theres not just the mutations/variations that occur from the dense populations & being spread over various biomes/climates, but Also it's easy to cross-pollinate them as well. so theres many types of apples that have been selectively bred to be more crunchy, sweet, tart, etc. :3
ALSO idk if i know a single person in the states who doesnt have Strong opinions about which apples they prefer & which ones they think r inferior. for example: personally ive been enjoying honey crisps lately :3 most ppl agree red delicious r bad (ironically lol), but not everyone! I sometimes like them & sometimes don't.
... and I realize how some of this may sound a little strange/exaggerated if ur not .. used to it, so i did wanna put disclaimer that no, this is not an exaggeration this is deadass what its like here.
TLDR: usamericans take apples VERY seriously & for some reason our school system is obsessed w them
