While I wrangle the dragons and their sockets, have another Alpha 1.3 prerelease - now featuring all but two enemies from the first game.

There's a few miscellaneous tweaks for some NPCs, but nothing too huge.

Haiii ^^ im a big fan of your art!! i think its totally rad & i was wondering how you render/color folds on clothing? the shapes you use are very interesting !

i tend to try nd simplify clothing folds into straight or curved lines for ease of drawing - my favourite way to do it is to ink a few lines in black and then use 2-3 lighter colors for depth, i think it looks cool that way :-)

(cleaner examples - i also like to use screentones on dark/black clothing and occasionally on color - generally i try to avoid using screentones excessively, so i only use them for blush, hair details, and black clothing/items)

i also tend to just draw by eye and looking at clothes irl, but i would recommend drapery studies to help add accuracy to your cartoony drawings

Unlike most dragons, Nils' props are separate SMs rather than being part of his SK. That also means they don't have any vert groups - and combining that with my limited knowledge of UE, I have no clue how they're animated, let alone bound to his armature.

Unless it involves sockets.

At first, I thought they were separate because he's a base dragon - potential armature issues with other dragons…then I remembered that Argus, Astor and Asher's props are part of their SKs.

Might update these at some point, I might not. They could use a touchup, but they don't NEED need it.

Getting back on topic...

After the fun that was updating Darius, Nils was a very welcome change of pace. Pretty easy to reshade all things considered (apart from the green ridge on his snout) and his elbows have been the least troublesome ones to date! Might need to reweight the hands though, those pinkies look a bit wild.

His wings are now a bit smaller, too. In retrospect, I might've overestimated how much padding the dragons' wings needed since the VISIBLE parts of the membranes are what matter. If you look close, part of Nils' wings clip through his torso at the very end of his exit anim - pretty sure it happens with his vanilla model too.

I'll have to go back and trim the previous Artisans' wings at some point.

Queer Books and Authors are at a Breaking Point

Authors, agents, publishers: every part of the industry is seeing the strain of five years of escalating anti-LGBTQ censorship.

if you'd like to show support, here are some upcoming queer books:

When Life Gives You Corpses is a brilliant YA about a cursed praying mantis who falls for a young witch. Yield Under Great Persuasion is a raunchy, but surprisingly sweet story about two men repairing their relationship. Fabulous Bodies is a horror story about a queer rockstar rising from the dead.

This is Where the Future Bleeds is a fantasy set in a vividly imagined land, where two women (who happen to kiss) are the key to healing the broken sky. You're No Better is a story about a teen struggling in the shadow of his murderous parent. Oil on Canvas is about a woman who finds disturbing paintings in the home of her dead mother.

and then here's a list of 26 queer books by Black authors set to publish this year, and a 10 upcoming books by trans authors. if you want to fight back against queer censorship, use your wallet! or (if that's not an option) you can contact your local library and ask them to stock a copy.

In addition: looking for indie publishers and queer bookshops is a great way to find and support queer authors and stories of so many infinite varieties! (The following suggestions are based on my UK-centric knowledge)

(Some) Queer Presses:

Lurid Editions are "a publishing project committed to intentional and conscientious acts of archival repair". They are "attentive to how marginalised histories are forgotten and remembered, [and] hungry to rediscover overlooked queer books". They've just received funding from Arts Council England to engage queer readers in a project to contribute to the archive!

Cipher Press "We’re really keen on the idea that queer and minority stories are for everybody, and we want to make our books – and the stories they tell - accessible to all" (what an amazing mission statement!)

Anamot Press "Anamot [Անամոթ] means shameless in Armenian. ⁣⁣Anamot Press publishes poetry and prose on intersecting experiences of gender, sexuality, race, migration, class, belonging and loss - with no shame."

(Some) Queer Bookshops

Queer Lit Oh man, I remember when this was just a tiny little shop, and now they're the biggest LGBT+ bookshop in Europe! They do amazing work in donating books about being trans to schools and parliament! They have a pay-it-forward board that will make you sob with its notes of love and support. (You can tell I wish I still lived nearby)

Lighthouse For Scottish friends - "a queer-owned and woman led independent community bookshop. We are an unapologetically activist, intersectional, feminist, antiracist, lgbtq+ community space"

Gay's The Word The OG Queer bookshop in the UK. One day I will make my pilgrimage!!

This really is just a tiny snapshot of all the amazing work of celebration and resistance that's being done for Queer literature at the moment. We live in frightening times, but I promise there is still lots of love and joy and hope out there in spaces like these. Support them in whatever way you can!!

I don't think I made the ridges in Darius' horns distinct enough during his first iteration. More importantly, I was torn on how to handle thin sheets like his script. Giving them different textures/colours on both sides means making them more than just flat planes - extra tris AND potential PS1 jiggle issues.

But as always, there ended up being bigger fish to fry - namely extreme elbow/wrist twisting and my eternally poor grasp of colour theory.

And I thought shading Astor and Alban was difficult.

Darius' hues border the exact blue part of the colour wheel and they're washed out enough to start looking purple. It feels like I've made a mess of his vert colours juggling saturation and hues making things look warmer or cooler. Sometimes greens made better highlights, other times leaning towards blue/purple did...only real constant was that saturation or lack thereof can do so, so much for just a single hue.

I may need to consider making actual palettes in the future. Winging it is never a good idea 99% of the time despite my insistence on doing exactly that, but whenever I look at the dragons' vanilla textures, I fixate on the way the hue and saturation shift across the body and I end up hesitant out of fear of inaccuracy.

Like whoopdeedoo, I'm actually keeping colours saved in Blender palettes and using vert colours on squares as cheatsheets for tails nowadays.

Still ain't gonna be much help when you've got cases like Darius where the legs are a hell of a lot more saturated than the arms and of different hues in the areas where the values are the same.
