i can't stop thinking about celty's story being a representation or/and it could be seen as a metaphor for a
gnc woman. she is directly and for purpose described as deceptively androgynous in the light novel. and she actually is.
trafficking victim experience. her head was the fundamental element of her identity so we can say that not just "celty's head" but celty herself was kidnapped and transported to another country. even if we don't say that, her actual body part was kidnapped and used as some illegal exotic product. this is wild when you think of it more than a few seconds
migrant experience. she had to learn how to live in japan with like zero experience in travelling and tourism in general and zero knowledge of japanese culture and language etc etc. and she fit in like. very well like she was always living in a japanese human society and never was a literal irish fairy. amazing
trauma impact in general. depression, dissociative amnesia or schizo spectrum disorders debut experience even (oh i hope you see and get it bc it's hard to explain shortly)
being physically disabled. she can't speak and uses alternative ways of communicating after all. she literally misses a part of her body, not so common like someone's hand or leg but still. it also can be about trauma (of becoming disabled) impact btw
rom-positive and sex-positive aroace. ok she's literally not a human and fell in love with some guy just because he fell in love with her and they have been through a lot together. and she knows him since he was a kid and she was some twisted kind of mother figure for him. and her feelings for him couldn't be compared to and couldn't be explained through human feelings (i don't remember the exact quote again. from ch.1 of epitome of. whatever it is.) but she reached a compromise with this guy and accepted his feelings and started to express something that seems really conventional and human-like for him. dare i say basic aroace dating experience. (also shinra is on aroace spectrum too i think he's something like grayaroace. but this will be another long story someday....)
This is getting a lot of notes again and is reminding me that I should try to get out for more walks in the nice autumn weather
taken seconds before disaster
Her 🖤🤍
I killed a dog. I put him down, I watched him go. I was looking him straight in the eyes. He didn't know what was happening, he didn't know why. He was just scared
i told yall id be back.
I just finished Pluribus and *scream*. The continual cycles of abuse in this show! The pod people forcing Carol into solitary confinement for over a month in order to break her, and leaving en masse every time she changed locations. The continual aggressiveness masked as self-care every time Carol has to call for help, with a message reminding her that it’s her fault that they left, while they continue to constantly surveil her. Zosia manipulating her into a romantic intimacy she clearly doesn’t feel while the pod people secretly harvested Carol’s eggs to forcibly assimilate her. And Carol knew that she was being played, but is once again victimised, because it’s a cycle she’s familiar with!
She called Zosia out on recreating a burned out diner from her memories and puppeting a poor former newlywed across the country just to convince her to write for their amusement by nostalgia-bombing her. But she was so fucking lonely and suicidal (and still grieving!) that she tried to convince herself that Zosia was different, could be different. The absolute chill I felt when Zosia told Carol that they were going to destroy her identity, her personhood, because they ‘love’ her. That she’d be happier by not being herself. Again, the recreation of her former failed conversion, only this time by her lover and hivemind honeypot. Carol is shown over and over again that she’s completely alone. The other humans dislike her and purposefully exclude her, except for Manousos, who she can’t trust because they’re too alike. Laxmi only calls her to tell her to go fuck herself (which, to be fair, is hilarious).
And more chills- Carol’s automatic fear towards Manousos once he arrives in her neighbourhood. Her rage is justified, but she considers this brown Latino man a danger because he’s alone, and not well off, and not able to make her comfortable. I winced, it felt like every white woman who clutched their purse or crossed the street when I walked near them. The fact that she, yet again, didn’t ask him anything about his life or journey, that she protected the pod people instead of him. Again she showed her hypocrisy, the same thing Laxmi called her out on. It took her life being in imminent danger for her to finally join up with the man who risked everything to answer her call to save the world.
Diabaté doing exactly what I said he was going to do, using women as living sex dolls (and using other pod people) to live out his James Bond, wealthy Americana fantasies. He learns about the pod people’s Soylent Green tendencies and accepts it, not because he’s fine with it (he finds the cannibalism disturbing), but because his comfort and pleasure matters more. This French Mauritian man is desperate to hold on to his American Dream, these now meaningless status symbols he’s amassing. Like Carol, he allows himself to be played because the alternative- absolute isolation, is too terrifying. And the pod people know that! They know everything about how to break people. And the way this show uses silence so effectively! Once Diabaté tells the pod people he’s done with his Rat Pack cosplay and leaves them alone, their cheerful conversations and sophisticated partying instantly stop. They shuffle around cleaning up in absolute silence.
Kusimayu, the Peruvian woman convinced to assimilate by her small ‘community’. This scene freaked me out so much. The pod people sing what is clearly a culturally significant song as they assimilate her, but as she spasms on the ground, there is no attempt at human connection- no one holds her hand or comforts her. They simply sing a stolen song that holds no true meaning for them, as they destroy the last Indigenous person with cultural and historical knowledge that mattered to them. As soon as she turns, they lapse into silence and leave the village behind to rot, the reason Kusimayu turned in the first place. She is now without community, without a people, without a land or history.
I really, unexpectedly, loved this show.
pluribus studies
I love this show so much... it's amazing. I'm excited and scared for the finale tonight and whatever happens, this show will remain as one of my favorites, and I'm happy to be witnessing another Vince masterpiece.
One of the best new shows out there. Vince cooked with this one. Also, filming in ABQ again is a joy!
you think pluribus can't get any more disturbing when you're presented with the idea of humanity becoming part of a blissful hivemind that wants the few stragglers left to join them, and then episode four smashes a barrel over your head with the realization that for carol, the entire world has suddenly reverted into what was the worst experience of her life. a conversion camp full of saccharine smiles with the sole purpose of making her assimilate. fuck
one of my favorite little pluribus details is that they make you listen to the voicemail in its entirety every single time. there's no skipping ahead, no oh you've heard this, no handwringing that the audience will get bored. we're in this with carol. we're gonna listen to the fucking voicemail again
she needs to ask for a shorter voicemail message
"Well, see... Carol Sturka was clearly written to be unlikeable, and you're not really supposed to root for her. You're supposed to root for the hive, and Vince doesn't write characters like that anyway..."
Vince Gilligan in every interview: "I love Carol Sturka 🥰. She's so funny and sarcastic. She's a hero, I'm so proud of writing a hero. I was tired of writing bad people because there are too many of them in the world right now. I love my hero Carol. She wants to save the world. Carol Carol Carol 🥰🥰🥰."
my name is manousos oviedo. i am not one of them. i wish to save the world.
average gay guy problems: i have been hooking up with my hockey rival, but now i am developing feelings for him and nobody can know! >_< also nobody serves ginger ale
average lesbian problems: my wife died when an alien virus turned all of humanity into a hivemind and then said hivemind sent a woman who looks like a female version of my romantasy hero to charm me into complacency, which i resisted at first but then i got lonely and now i think i am falling for her >_< also john cena said the hivemind is eating people
