Don’t do what you know on a gut level to be the wrong thing to do. Don’t stay when you know you should go or go when you know you should stay. Don’t fight when you should hold steady or hold steady when you should fight. Don’t focus on the short-term fun instead of the long-term fall out. Don’t surrender all your joy for an idea you used to have about yourself that isn’t true anymore. Don’t seek joy at all costs. I know it’s hard to know what to do when you have a conflicting set of emotions and desires, but it’s not as hard as we pretend it is. Saying it’s hard is ultimately a justification to do whatever seems like the easiest thing to do—have the affair, stay at that horrible job, end a friendship over a slight, keep loving someone who treats you terribly. I don’t think there’s a single dumbass thing I’ve done in my adult life that I didn’t know was a dumbass thing to do while I was doing it. Even when I justified it to myself—as I did every damn time—the truest part of me knew I was doing the wrong thing. Always. As the years pass, I’m learning how to better trust my gut and not do the wrong thing, but every so often I get a harsh reminder that I’ve still got work to do.

My First Short Film

A month back I joined a filmmaking workshop and honestly it has become one of the best decisions I've made! Not only did I enjoy learning everything about filmmaking but also I met some really amazing people and my team also won Best Picture in the Senior Category !!! The workshop was actually aimed at kids from 8 to 18 years of age and since I just turned 20 in June I wasn't sure I would be allowed to participate. But I think I must've learnt a thing or two about adult-ing because instead of letting an amazing experience go by I emailed the organizers and asked if they could let me join and they AGREED!  It takes place between the end of the film and before the short film, Tangled Ever After, that was released about our wedding day. It’s that three years of adventure and journey of Flynn and Rapunzel, finding out who they are and finding out who one another are. It’s not going to be done in the same CG animation style. It’s going to be done in a really cool 2D stylized way. Mandy and I are back, with some of the other people who voiced the characters in the original film, and Alan Menken is coming back to do music. While it’s not a full-blown musical show, there will be some songs peppered throughout. It’s just really cool.

When I was younger, society gave me an invisible checklist. It suggested that I should go to school, get a degree, graduate, find a ‘good’ job, get married and then have kids. And hey, that’s what some people want and that’s great. But I don’t and I’m not a product on an assembly line. Instead I’ve created my own list of goals and ambitions that reflect who I want to be. So next time during an interview or at a family party, if you want to know why I don’t have a husband yet at the age of 26, it’s because my purpose on this planet isn’t just to be somebody’s wife. I’m more than that. And all my sisters, you’re more than that.

Don’t limit yourself to daydreaming about your wedding entrance or how your outfit will look. Daydream about being president, making a difference in the world or having your dream job. It’s scary to go beyond the limits that have been placed on you, but trust me when I say from experience, it’s so worth it. You will change the world.

One day, you may become a wife or a mother and those are special positions to have. But please do not live your life thinking marriage and motherhood is your purpose on this planet. You are more than your ability to nurture and bare children. You have a unique brain and skill set that can help you achieve whatever you set your mind to, provided you work hard for it. So start working.

Create your own path and don’t be scared if it has less traffic than the main road.
