it's fun how the telephone game of history has led people to think prion disease just magically manifests itself when you cannibalize the human brain. like, that was one very notable and deeply tragic event, it's not something that just. happens. the person you're eating has to *have* prion disease to pass it on to you.

yes, you can, prions from protein misfolding do just spontaneously occur, but that is exceptionally rare, and cannibalism is not like, some kind of trigger for it, which is the point of this post. cannibalism doesn't cause prion disease to manifest, and the only way to get prion disease from cannibalism is to eat someone who already has it. The reason we relate cannibalism to prion disease is because of a horrible tragedy that took place in papua new guinea, where a group of people whose funeral rights included ritual cannibalism lost a loved one to what they did not know at the time was prion disease, and due to it's years if not decades long incubation process, no link was made when the people who ate the first victim began wasting away and dying as well, so they were eaten during their funerals and the disease spread slowly through the whole group. it was just horrible misfortune, and it gets under my skin a bit when people make jokes about cannibalism causing prion disease, because it's both not true and also tied into a misunderstanding and a kind of knee-jerk disgust factor at a cultural practice unfamiliar to a lot of us. i honestly think the funerary cannibalism think is kinda beautiful, i like the idea that we pass on some part of ourselves to our loved ones.
