Good news? I figured out how to write scene 19. And the rest of the fic to boot.

Bad news? I’m scrapping the rest of the fic and rewriting it all. Everything I wrote and was editing through?? Going in the trash can.

Best news?! At least I know it’s all going in the trashcan now and I don’t have to continue to sob in confusion over how to reconcile the og writing vs. the side-quest Quan Yizhen dragged me on in chapter 5 lol

Oh dear beloved Greater Tumblr, pls answer a befuddlement of mine. The movie implied that Grace was right about his theory about not needing water to evolve. I could have sworn that line at the end going “I told you so and you were right,” was referencing the fact he found an alien that didn’t need water to evolve. But the book tells a different story?? Eridian’s use water in their circulatory system as a coolant. So was this just changed in the movie or am I missing something??

Yes I did know about relativity!! I think I made a post on this exact concept either the same time you sent this anon or just after idk.

My confusion was that the movie phrased it without mentioning relativity and it’s been like 10+ years since I bothered to read a science paper so I just somehow didn’t understand it was meaning his experienced time and not the time outside his almost speed of light travel.

And I’ve read so many sci fic books that just shrug about the science behind faster than light travel that while watching the movie I just rolled with the speed of light engine.

…and then somehow didn’t notice/remember Stratt did say earlier that it was a 20 year round trip. I just got stuck in a mental loop of the computer telling him getting home was 11.9 light years away and it would take almost 5 years. And then mentally dropped the middle of the movie scene about two decades because my brain brains like that.

So yea, brain brained very hard (clearly) and decided warp drive was obviously at play here and so when I got to the book and it dropped the near speed of light bomb on me it took a hot minute to remember relativity would do that, yes.

The moment it clicked the 4 years and 8 months was his experienced time though, I followed 🥰

I hope Andy Weir knows I love him. The answer was basically on the next page.

The part confusing me was that I remember the time back to Earth being 4 years and 8 months. So I kept scratching my head going “??” because what do you mean he went 11.9 light years in 4 years and 8 months. Which is a ludicrous idea without faster than light travel.

And the book is very clear about astrophage not being faster than light. It was something like 0.92 I think. Which is near light speed but not actually light speed.

The part my little brain wasn’t following was that 4 years and 8 months was how long Ryland Grace was in a coma. Because Ryland Grace was going near the speed of light. And as such, time was slower for him than on earth.

Because ✨relativity✨

Dude was experiencing time that much slower. He was not in fact going that much faster.

It’s amazing how the smallest detail is important. One minuscule line changed that from being nonsensical to being perfectly reasonable. By Earth standards, he’s been gone a little over 12 years, but only physically experienced less than half of that.

0.92 times the speed of light 😌 I finally have a number to properly math with; my friends are about to hate me so much 😌✨✨✨

The one thing that really bothers me about astrophage killing all the stars in the galaxy is that I cannot figure out how it’s theoretically possible for them to transmigrate to other stars as quickly as it does in the story.

The rate described is a full ass 5% dimming in 20 years. And if reading this passage in chapter 3 correct, it’s an exponential growth. 5% in 20 years will not be the standard rate of star decay. And it’s apparently effecting all stars in the galaxy.

The distance to get between stars is a long ass time guys—even with faster than light travel, which astrophage must be doing. It would be years for those little parasites to jump from one star to another star to start a new colony.

The sun couldn’t be the first star to be infected. From the moment the Petrova line was noticed to when they had a spacecraft out to look at it to when Ryland Grace was first brought in on Project Hail Mary? It’s been a handful of years at most. I’m guesstimating 2ish probably.

The closest star to us is Proxima Centuri at 4.24 light years away.

At the beginning of the story, it’s said Ryland Grace is around 11.9 something light years away from earth (can’t remember what it said exactly rn). At the end thought, when he starts heading home, despite not changing much in position he’s about 4 -5 years away.

For the sake of my brain, I’m using 12:4 because I’m half assing this and not writing out the equation. Anyway, so assuming this is around the speed of astrophage, it could have hopped on over to Proxima Centuri in a year perhaps? It is around 4:1 for this star (with my guestimated math). So that would make sense that it’s noticeably dimming too.

But everything beyond that?? The farther out the star is, the more ludicrous it gets to have the scientists on earth able to see the stars decaying.

From what I can tell from the list on Wikipedia of stars close to us, the next star out is 8.7094 light years away. That’d be 2 years ish??

The astrophage would have just gotten there. And clearly, by the fact the scientist can see that Tau Ceti is unaffected, it’s somehow gotten out 11.9118 light years away from Sol.

That would have taken it around 4 years. It has not been 4 years since the start of finding the astrophage when they made the Project Hail Mary decisions.

Anyway, unless astrophage moves a lot faster than my guesstimate there, clearly it cannot have started on Sol.

So instead, it had to migrate to us.

First rant here? Why was it migrating?? (Which is actually a rant that applies above too but it was not thought of until this point of writing the rant out).

Giant migrations happen in life when they’re searching for new resources or mating. Which is why it was going to Venus. Food and fucking.

SO WHY IS IT MIGRATING TO OTHER STARS?! That would happen when it’s run out of a star. It’s not like it can’t do interstellar travel?? So being force hitchhiked across the universe isn’t plausible unless it was captured and taken by force by someone.

It’s going to go the easiest path to the food. If the food supply wasn’t depleted, why did it jump ship and take a hike to find another source?

There should be dead stars guys. That should have been the first thing scientists noticed. Stars straight up dying before their expected death in a pattern of travel. HOW DID NO STARS EXTINGUISH BEFORE SOL WAS AFFECTED?!!

Which is still a point of rant even when ignoring the migration bit. How was nothing noticeably dimming and/or dying before they noticed the sun. Clearly it started further out and came to us, so those stars would be decaying faster than ours. There should have been stars dimming noticeably way earlier.

Some astronomer SHOULD HAVE NOTICED STARS DIMMING EARLIER THEN IRINA PETROVA AND HER RED LINE.

Okay I should just… stop now. I keep finding new nooks of astrophage to complain about. My mom is begging me to shut up. I didn’t even give her the rant. She just knows it exists.

I THINK I FIGURED IT OUT!!

The astrophage is a single celled organism. My math wasn’t mathing because I forgot to fact in how small the little fuckers are. 1:4 was the rate it was moving a spaceship. So taking into account that much force behind one single cell?? It probably moves a lot faster than that when it’s got no extra weight to lug about.

Okay I can be happy now that the made up math makes logical sense at least.

…even if I still don’t know why it was transmigrating in the first place.

Question for anyone that knows. Contains Project Hail Mary movie spoilers. How does Dr. Grace have personal items on Hail Mary? He was kidnapped. Literally on the day before launch. He didn’t pack those things. He wasn’t supposed to go. And it’s not like anyone knew they were kidnapping him for this until they kidnapped him. No one planned for the entire science team to die the day before launch. How does he have personal items??
