i feel like Woke people on tumblr know what autism is in theory from reading our posts but when they actually have to be accommodating to an autistic person or at least not straight up mock them for simple stuff like not getting a joke, they conveniently forget everything they’ve learned

I don’t know if this is my adhd or my anxiety or the result of childhood trauma or just a personal thing but something I’ve recently come to realize:
Having to work at something doesn’t mean I’m bad at it.
I’m a math major, in my last term of undergrad, and I’m in 400-level math courses which are obvs pretty advanced. And it doesn’t come naturally to me. I work a lot on all of these classes, on homework and studying and everything. It takes me a while to understand.
But I’m not bad at math. I’ve lived five years now terrified of failing my classes because I wasn’t instantly perfect at them so I must be awful and I’m going to fail but... that’s not true? I’m here to learn. It’s not expected that I’ll know how to do everything before I’m taught how to do it.

I’m sorry but some people will never have, by your standard, “good” days. They know this, they acknowledge it, and yet certain able bodied people will still try to gallop in on their fucking white horse to say that everyone has bad days sometimes but life is still easy. That is not everyone’s reality, so please just stop.
To be clear, when I say I’m having a “good” day it doesn’t mean that I’m able-bodied again. A good day is one where I’m still weak, dizzy, in pain and fatigued but I’m just able enough to do some daily functions.
A “good day” for a spoonie is not the same as a good day for able-bodied people.
As someone with pretty severe rejection sensitive dysphoria and social anxiety I’ve almost completely eliminated spiraling anxious thoughts about things I can’t control while laying down for bed with this one really simple trick and seriously, I cannot sing its praises enough:
Before I lay down, I know what I’m going to think about.
What I mean is, before I get in bed to sleep, I say to myself “what calms me down? is it big enough to hold my attention for 10 minutes to a couple hours?” once I’ve said “okay this is it for tonight” I lay down, and whenever my thoughts start going to things that make me anxious or upset or spiral my thoughts, I go “no, we’re thinking about [this one thing]”. Maybe I have to ‘realign’ every 30 seconds, but it keeps me from spiraling into anxious despair. Personally for me, low key embarrassing, but for me it’s daydreaming and “writing” in my head. I go “we’re writing this story tonight” and whenever I start the process of spiraling I start everything over again.
Just pick something relaxing, very thought consuming, and be BRUTAL about going “no, we’re thinking about THIS” and do it over and over and over again–as soon as your thoughts go slightly somewhere else, realign, start over.
Seriously, I used to lay awake for actual hours crying with anxiety and consumed with depression. For most of my life before I learned this trick I couldn’t control my thoughts for more than a few minutes if I was having a bad anxiety day–sometimes even on good days. Don’t doubt this trick, if you have ADHD or anxiety (or anything else that makes your thoughts run wild), give it a serious try. It really, really works.
Don’t lay down until you have decided on something to think about that isn’t anxiety inducing, when your thoughts start to spiral, tell your brain “we’re not thinking about that right now, we’re thinking about [this calming thing]”. It works. It really really does!
I do a similar exercise visualizing a triangle for relaxation or anxiety reducing. I just bring it back to tracing a triangle in my head. Spiralling? Forget the thing, triangle. But I didn’t- nope. Triangle. Its a simple but effective minfullness exercise for me.
Hey adhdblr my therapist is kind of terrible and I need advice that I can’t get from him.
So like, I just changed my dose on my meds and like I can focus better that’s good but I can’t... shift my focus? Like at all?
And I know that’s a common adhd thing but like, I’m a writer, and I get going on a plot in my head and when it’s time for class it’s painful to try and stop thinking about what I was doing before and focus on class. Like, I can focus on class now bc meds but I still have trouble switching tasks.
And it isn’t always between interesting thing and not interesting thing like if I’m playing a video game and I want to stop and write, both activities I enjoy and want to do, I can’t tear my focus away from the game to write, or vice versa.
Anyone got tips? Timers to snap me out of hyperfocus don’t help bc it’s not that time is getting away from me, it’s that I know I want/need to switch tasks but my brain won’t let go of the one I’m working on. Writing down idea lists hasn’t helped bc then I just want to do those things instead of what I need to be doing.
help from people who are actually adhd and have things that work for them are appreciated bc everything I have rn is from well-meaning neurotypicals who don’t know what actually helps at best, and people who won’t address my adhd bc they don’t think I have it at worst.

@ people with ADHD: friendly reminder that if you take adderall, you should try to avoid drinking/eating/ingesting things with red dye #40 and yellow dye #5 in them, as they make adderall less effective (these are commonly found in substances like gatorade and cough drops).

Is funny when doctors and other peeps act like my problem is that I’m obsessed w/ my disability. Um no. You have it backwards. The problem is I HAVE to be cuz it is a constant problem.
I’m deaf. About 25 years ago, I was working for a little while as a classroom aide at a program that worked with deaf children with multiple disabilities. All the teachers and other classroom aides were hearing, but they all could sign. Not at native signing level, but enough to carry on a basic conversation.
So, one evening, all us adults bring all the kids to a special one-night camping trip. All the kids are put to sleep, which frees up the adults to get into a circle and have some fun to ourselves for a while. People start talking, except they were forgetting to sign. So I reminded them to please sign so I could understand them. One of them told me that, no, they weren’t going to sign because this was our night to have fun and not have to think about communication.
So no one signed all night. They talked, they laughed, they had fun. I sat, feeling lost and cut off and betrayed. I remember wishing I had had the nerve to say, “No, what you mean is, you want a night in which everyone EXCEPT ME gets to not think about communication.”
I think sometimes when non-disabled people insist that we are too obsessed with our disability, what they REALLY mean is, “I wish you would stop reminding me that I have a shared responsibility as a fellow member of society to proactively ensure that we all have an opportunity to be engaged in society. I wish you would just pretend to not have a disability so I can pretend that I don’t have to do anything to enable you to do the same things the rest of us are doing.”
The luxury of not needing to think about disability in a society that is designed to lock us on the cold outside is a non-disabled privilege.
This is my thought process every time someone tells me that I bring up my Panic DIsorders, Agoraphobia, or various physical health issues too often
Here’s the thing: I bring it up often because they affect every aspect of my life. I don’t get to decide that I’m “sick” of bringing it up and take a breather from thinking about it; I AM it. My illnesses (both mental and physical) are as much a part of me as anything else.
I’m sure it’s inconvenient on y’all to hear me mention my stomach pains on a every-few-days basis, but I can guarantee you that it’s infinitely more inconvenient for me to have to know what I can or cannot eat, knowing that if I deviate from the “okay list”, I will be in excrutiating pain with potentially dangerous levels of blood loss for days, if not weeks, on end.
I’m sure it’s inconvenient for y’all to hear me say “I can’t go outside, I’m agoraphobic”, but I can guarantee you that it’s infinitely worse for me, living with the thoughts that are rattling around up there while having a bunch of bridge-dwelling trolls on this hellsite tell me that I’m just trying to be oppressed.
Mentally/physically disabled people don’t necessarily want your sympathy or special accomodations; They just want a modicum of understanding and respect.
People accommodate neurotypical, hearing, &/or able-bodied people all of the time. They just don’t think of it as accommodation or name it as such.
Ableism allows our needs to be seen as a burden, too much, “special”, *extra*, inconvenient, hard work. Always.

ESPECIALLY, when people don’t understand that sometimes “hyperactivity” can be internal and not external. Little Timmy may be bouncing off the walls but Erica hasn’t had a quiet moment in her brain since birth. But she is quiet and smart and isn’t really a bother. Hmmm….
Executive Function Deficit Disorder sums up my whole damn life. ADHD is a really poor name for it
AND ESPECIALLY since the DSM combined the types into one disorder. I can never remember what the other diagnostic manual that still counts them as separate is called, but since I live in America, the DSM name and definition are what go on most of my paperwork, so officially I have “inattentive-type ADHD” so, you know, I have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, but the type without hyperactivity. So... Attention Deficit Disorder... but we can’t call it that anymore!
Look I understand why they would combine the two, considering the treatment is by and large the same for both, but like... putting both under the ADHD umbrella and pushing the idea that ADD doesn’t exist on its own is... not good, considering girls are wayyyyy more likely to have inattentive type than hyperactive or combined type (not impossible, just statistically less likely) and if we stick inattentive type under the hyperactive umbrella, yeah, I’m hyperactive in my head so you know that isn’t exactly visible.
So a name that focuses on the shared traits of both would be much better in my opinion, since there are a lot, and it would prevent misunderstandings with people who tell me I can’t be ADHD because I’m not (visibly) hyperactive.
one fairly common experience of gifted children is wishing for pain. wishing you had some great big horrible thing in your past so that you can justify the pain you’re in, and so that you’ll deserve help. it’s exhausting and it fucks you up and to anyone out there who feels like they haven’t suffered enough to get help: you’re allowed to want help. you’re in enough pain. you deserve to feel better
Gifted kids be like let me describe something it’s very common with anyone with mental illness but I’m going to connect it to me being very smart when I was six years old haha it’s sad that I’m not constantly validated in the way I was when I was in elementary school . there’s no reason you couldn’t have just said person with a mental illness but you said gifted kids cuz you don’t feel special anymore

Your argument doesn’t even hold up. You think this is about former Gifted kids being sad now because they’re not being treated like they were in elementary school, which was presumably better.
But the post was, “It’s common for Gifted children to experience deep psychological pain in elementary school.” As in, a lot of Gifted kids didn’t experience being held up as an example and praised a bunch as actually, you know… positive.
It’s not like you do anything to earn having a high IQ, any more than you earn being tall or having good eyesight. It’s just something that happens to you as you grow up. Sure, you might be able to reach things on high shelves, but you also smack your head into doorways. And from personal experience? When a teacher points you out as the only person in your grade 2 class to score perfectly on a test, fucking nobody wants to play with you at recess after.
Often growing up Gifted is just like childhood with any other neurodivergence—having social and emotional issues the people around you need to be experts to even realize you’re having trouble, much less know how to help you. A four-year-old’s parents don’t usually have to watch for “I just realized that everyone I love will inevitably die and I can’t reliably self-soothe myself when we drive away from Grandma’s, so I have NO emotional coping tools for this” meltdowns.
Oh, except there’s one difference: A lot of adults think that being intellectually smart means you will never have social problems, emotional problems, learning disabilities, or mental illnesses. So adults will literally actually say, “They’re a smart kid, they’ll figure it out” when the problem is… every other six-year-old hating you and you don’t know what you did.
Hence… the really common experience of wishing for some “real” cause of pain, because finally people would recognize that you may he a seven year old that all the grownups think is just great, but you still have really big problems you don’t know how to deal with and you really need some fucking help.
Sorry for the radio silence, things have been hectic with school and life. I’m applying to graduate programs and trying to make sure I, you know, graduate, so I haven’t had a lot of time for tumblr in general oof.
Hopefully I will be able to come back soon and actually write worthwhile posts.

I am so hecking excited for Christmas this year bc my mom is getting me a weighted blanket and I have needed one of those for a long time so I’m very very excited also I got my mom a really pretty bracelet for Christmas and I’m so excited to give it to her.

we have a complicated relationship to truth in that we rarely know what it is until we're told/have it affirmed to us.
