I’m really glad Suzanne Collins kept with first person POV for sunrise. It makes the third person POV for ballad even more of an obvious choice
Reading Sunrise on the Reaping today reminded me of why I fell in love with this series all those years ago. <3
How she got me sobbing into my hands within two chapters
I don’t think any book has made me have to stop reading and take a walk as many times as this one has except maybe while reading the Game of Thrones.
Masterful, compelling, horrific and heart shattering writing from Miss Suzanne. Oozing with empathy, with bravery and it connects to such a deep sadness and a deep hope within me and I’m not even done reading. Everything is just the right measure to hit the heart. A tough fucking read but worth it.
Go buy sunrise on the reaping!
My beloved Mr. Cat passed away today, July 7, 2024, at the age of 17. The top picture is one of the first photos I took of him after I adopted him in November 2008. He loved curling up in a basket (photo taken last year). The bottom photo is from several months ago. He was an orange cat through and through, and my home is much too quiet without him.
If Hadestown has a moral, she says, then it’s “you have to try, you have to have hope, not because success is a given – it’s not. Orpheus fails. We heroicise” – here she breaks off to apologise that jet lag has led to her making up words – “we heroicise Orpheus not because he succeeds but because he tries, and that endeavour alone is worthwhile. How to live, and not merely survive, is to believe things could change.”

He believes in you, you know. What makes you say that? He told me. He said you’re good with people. He’s not wrong.

"shipping and blorbofication are not inherently at odds with understanding a story's deep themes" and "some people can't grasp the themes of a story because they never learned how to engage with stories outside of the lens of shipping and blorbofication" are two statements that can coexist
Thank god she didn’t overreact
My favorite ship dynamic of all time, ever, is a little something I like to call anxiety x audacity
