Arctic Monkeys vs Pink Floyd: The Artistic Similarities Between ‘AM’ and ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’.
Now this is something that I’ve noticed for quite a while but haven’t seen anywhere on the Internet so far, so I thought I’d share it with Tumblr.
Despite there being limited to no references, musically, about ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ on Arctic Monkeys’ 5th and latest effort ‘AM’, I couldn’t help but notice the very striking similarities between the albums in their appearance.
Pink Floyd’s ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’, released in 1973, is, undoubtedly, one of the most infamous album artworks of all time and, of course, considered one of the best and most influential albums in music. Countless musicians, artists and critics blame Pink Floyd for creating an album so unstoppable in it’s creativity, sounds and enigmatic appearance that it’s pretty much flawless.
‘AM’, released almost exactly 40 years later than ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’, Arctic Monkeys hit a goldmine they hadn’t seen since their debut with ‘AM’. Getting a perfect 10/10 in NME and the quote ‘best album of the decade’ and countless more flattering scores from critics, this record has simply put the cherry on top of their already mind-blowing discography cake. Since it’s release, the Monkeys have never been more popular across the pond and they continue their dominance as the UK’s favourite rock and roll sons.
But I only started to notice something between the two records when they were lined up, vertically, on my Records shelf...
Here they are obviously lying flat, but you can still make out that a single white line seeps across the spine of both records. That might seem like a very minute detail, but it stands out like a sore thumb when you’ve got all your records lined up. The similarities come across more vividly, and way more obviously, when you open up the Gatefold of ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’...
The use of waveforms on both records are really clear here, and I think that says a lot about both records aiming to be sonically pleasing. ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ is famous for playing with sounds and being very experimental and Alex Turner, nearing the release of ‘AM’, mentioned in an interview that they wanted to nail a studio album. An album with high production value, multiple instruments and paradise for the listener’s ears. It’s fair to say that both bands well and truly achieved that.
Turner always mentioned, from the off, that ‘AM’ was a tribute to ‘VU’ after the Velvet Underground’s album. If the title ‘AM’ is a tribute to Lou Reed and co. then the album sleeve and artwork is definitely a tribute to Pink Floyd’s ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’.
People often say that when you take influence from those you respect into your work but then put your own twist on it, greatness can happen.
Just ask Quentin Tarantino.

Kanye West headlining Glastonbury 2015: Ultimately, it’s his Legacy on the line...
Following the announcement last month that Foo Fighters will be taking to the Pyramid Stage on the Friday night of the biggest and greatest festival in the world, the Eavis’ announced this evening that Kanye West will follow Dave Grohl & Co. as Saturday night’s headliner at Glastonbury.
This announcement tells us a couple of important things. Firstly, that Mr. West’s new album, the so far un-scheduled ‘So Help Me God’, should get it’s long awaited release some time before Glastonbury, so that the new tunes can be embraced fully on their performance, but secondly, and more importantly, people FUCKING HATE Kanye West.
I’ve been going to Glastonbury every year since 2011 and have been actively interested in the festival since around 2006/2007, and never have I read/heard such a backlash to a Headliner announcement. Of course, Jay-Z’s headline announcement a few years back was definitely controversial, but mainly due to Noel Gallagher’s now infamous, personal vendetta against any music genre other than rock to take the major spotlight at the festival. Other Headline announcements have been frowned upon, as recently as Metallica last year (who totally owned it, by the way), but there are comments upon comments on social media this evening that are calling for Kanye’s and the Eavis’ heads.
Unfortunately, but possibly deserved, the comments are mainly aimed at Kanye West being an absolute wanker. We don’t need to go into this. On the other hand, what we do need to go into, is that not many people are recognising what a great Live act he is. By the time of his Headline performance, he should have 7 studio albums to his name and a catalogue of collaborations and features. I’ve been lucky enough to see him live already, back on his Glow in the Dark tour in support of his 4th studio album, ‘808′s and Heartbreak’. He was absolutely off the chain. With tunes in his catalogue like ‘Gold Digger’, ‘Touch the Sky’, ‘Jesus Walks’ and ‘Good Life’, he owned it, until he decided to finish with doing ‘Love Lockdown’ 7 times because he ‘needed to practice and he couldn’t get it right’...
Now here’s where the interesting debate should begin and end, not with how much of an ‘arsehole’ he is, but with how he’s going to approach this absolutely vital performance:
Is he going to make it about him, or is he going to make it about the music?
Of course, haters will jump to the conclusion that with an ego the size of Kanye West’s, that question is a no-brainer. He’s going to make it about him, end of story. In the middle of his set, he’s going to go off on a 25 minute rant about Adidas, his shoes, fashion and Kim. Who gives a fuck?
But here is where you underestimate the Eavis’.
Kanye isn’t stupid. He knows how much spotlight is going to be on him at this performance, not just from the audience he’ll pull at the festival but from the BBC live coverage which will be accessible from around the world. Yes, he may very well see this as the best platform of all time to get his messages across, but the Eavis’ will speak to him about it just like they’ve spoken to every other ‘controversial’ act they’ve put at the top of their bill.
Mr. 99 Problems, Jay-Z himself, seemed to have one more until he absolutely knocked it out of Worthy Farm with a barn-storming set that was entirely self-conscious in the best way possible. Jay-Z embraced the festival’s rock and roll heritage and came out mocking Noel Gallagher with his very own performance of ‘Wonderwall’. He backed himself with a fantastic Live band and stapled his name into the Glastonbury history books.
Metallica had a Jay-Z situation, just swap Hip-Hop for Metal. They had some controversy surround them in the build up to their performance as it was made public knowledge that lead singer, James Hetfield, was a keen hunter and had taken down a few fair share of bears in his time, which, undoubtedly, clashed with Glastonbury’s very Earth and Nature loving approach to life and charity. Therefore, before coming on stage, Metallica played a video of a man being hunted down by bears. Those bears were revealed to be the members of Metallica in bear costumes.
Metallica 1 - 0 Metal Haters.
By the end of the night, Team Metallica had won by a very comfortable margin, putting on one hell of a set that once again proved that any genre of music can triumph on the Pyramid Stage.
Now, back to the topic at hand. Of course, Kanye is always going to do his set his way, but in order for it to be a success, he has to nail down a few things...
- He has to play with a Live band. Live music is what Glastonbury is all about. He can’t just show up with a DJ who presses play at the back of the stage. If he does that, he’ll be covered in more piss than Bear Grylls.
- Of course, he’s going to make it about him, but he has to make it about others as well. Recently collaborating with Paul McCartney and Rihanna, as well as many other artists and musicians over the years, some guest spots have got to open up. Rihanna seems like a logical choice seeing as ‘FourFiveSeconds’ is still dominating the airwaves and ‘All of the Lights’ is a favourite from his catalogue. Also, more importantly, getting a Beatle up there with you in the form of Paul McCartney will do him a hell of a lot of good.
Here’s a short list of all the great artists he’s collaborated with on major songs over his career:
Jay-Z, Beyonce, John Legend, Jamie Foxx, John Mayer, T-Pain, Big Sean, Bon Iver (Justin Vernon) and Kid Cudi.
If Kanye pulls all the right strings and makes all the right phone calls, maybe some we can’t even predict, then this could be a once in a lifetime headline set.
- A rant is always going to be on the cards. He can’t not say something, we’ll all think that something is wrong with him but, ultimately, if he can keep it to a minimum, say 5 minutes, and truly concentrate on cranking out all the great music he’s made in the past 15 years or so then we could really be in for a truly special set.
In conclusion, if people are concentrating purely on Kanye’s childish attitude to criticise his place at the top of the greatest festival on the planet, then they should think again, because give that man a microphone and let him bring his friends along then we could be in for the night of a lifetime.
