Pessimist Part 1 I guess. Y'know, a few years ago, I was happy. Finding tumblr, a progressive social media site? Going Vegan and using the vegan calculator every year to see what I've done, who I've saved? Waking up to different posts/studies by the United Nations and IPCC supporting it? It was like walking through a haze of doom and despair only for a golden bar to appear, to hoist myself up and look to a brighter horizon.
Pessimist 2. Unfortunately however, discovering the venomous hatred of veganism on this platform, and having people call those who share these sources Liars/Cultists, and straight up Dismissing posts like the one you reblogged about the United Nations stating Veganism can save the world, and realizing that much of this progressive language on this site is Performative at best?
Pessismist 3. It was like straddling that bar, slipping, banging my nether regions on it, and falling straight back if not Deeper into the abyss. How? How tf do y'all do it? Am I the only one that feels like there is Absolutely No hope left because the majority of people? no matter their political affiliation are a bunch of self-centered, lazy, morons? The Answer is Right there? The way out of this climate change Nightmare with keys to even Better things. Is Right In Front Of You?
Pessimist 4. And you have people going "Nah that's absurd" ?? Saying we need to take on the 100 corporations??? With NO plan??? And outwardly mocking? Or Hating on People? For taking the safest, most logical path?? By just changing what you eat a couple times a day? Bro. I'm Mentally Exhausted. And I'm not even a Fucking Activist. How do you maintain your faith in humanity to do these things. when the majority of people on here are So, God Damn Stupid? Im not even angry, I am just Shocked?
Pessimist 5. I mean "Here is some science backed information that can prevent the world and quite literally, billions of men/beasts from dying in a broiler caused by ghg emissions" The average Tumblr Individual: I'm not going to do this because I feel like you're shaming me. Bro, Billions of lives will be lost? Sharing info is not guilt tripping? This is a literal matter of Life and Death, who cares? Are you all Out of your Fucking Minds? Im sorry dude. Ik you got kids following you, but like??
The thing to recognise is the enormous social pressure to conform, and the psychological impact of that pressure on people’s ability to perceive information in objective terms. Confirmation bias is the main reason that intelligent people are able to dismiss demonstrable facts as ‘vegan propoganda,’ while simultaneously believing these viral posts with 200k+ shares, filled with misinformation and without a single source. We take in the information which backs up our existing world-view and we discard the rest.
Historically, even with social justice movements who have ended up winning over majority opinion, before that massive shift, the majority of the population remained in denial. When public opinion suddenly switches, the majority change their minds and pretend that’s what they always thought. We all like to think we would have been on the right side of history, but most people weren’t until after the fact. Fortunately, it takes far fewer people to be convinced of a position on social justice in order to result in substantial change.
All throughout history, real change has come from an active, politically engaged minority. We don’t need to convince everyone, just a large enough minority to force social change, and how large that minority needs to be is often overestimated. Erica Chenoweth, a political scientist at Harvard, looked at hundreds of campaigns over the last century and found that it takes around 3.5% of the population actively participating in protests to spark radical political change. We are a long way from that with veganism, but we are growing at a rapid rate, despite how hopeless it can seem.
The problem we face with veganism is that the longer it takes for the public to wake up to the truth, the more animals die and the more our environment is destroyed. We just don’t have the luxury of time - I am hoping that with the likes of WHO, the UN FAO and The World Bank coming out in favour of a radical shift away from animal agriculture, it will get to a point where no reasonable person can deny it. Those who deny the truth about animal agriculture will at that point basically be akin to the fringe climate deniers we see today - not taken seriously by anyone with any sort of intellectual integrity.

real animal rights issues according to non-vegans on tumblr:
pets (aka animals i personally find cute) being abused
peta doing anything, regardless of how harmful it actually is
some random dumb-ass vegan who feeds their cat steamed carrots only
stuff that is already considered socially unacceptable where they are from so it’s easy to criticize, like circuses using animals
stuff that happens away from them so it’s easy to criticize, like bullfighting or whaling
obscure nsfw furry artist on twitter drawing anthropomorphic dog with neon dick
issues that are just an afterthought really, there’s too much to worry about on earth after all, also if you deeply care about this you are probably a bigot or something because i say so:
animals being systematically abused and exploited in factory farms
animals being systematically killed after they stop serving a human-given purpose, even in “small local farms”
76 billion land animals and between 1 and 2.7 trillion sea animals killed every single year for human consumption
the fact that we cant even have this conversation because “woke” non-vegans systematically derail it
every day i find new ways to loathe white western vegans who willingly remain ignorant of indigenous cultivation and culinary traditions
like, in southern mexico, the maya have been tending honey bees for thousands of years. it is part of tradition, nutrition, and cultural endurance. meanwhile, the white vegan demands to use agave nectar as an alternative. but agave nectar, which comes from the desert plant the agave, requires an absurd amount of water to grow in order to meet the rising demands for this honey alternative. so not only does the white western vegan participate in an unnessary usage of precious desert water, which they pretend to care so deeply about when they somewhat correctly critique the meat and dairy industry, they are also diverting water from communities (to a growing form of industrial agriculture) and ignoring the cultural value of a foodstuff, honey, that has been sustainable for thousands of years in the hands of indigenous central americans (among others).
I am in agreement that it is certainly not the place of white vegans to demand changes to indigenous cultural traditions. While culture alone is not a good reason to cause harm, I too would condemn any vegan ‘demanding’ that indigenous people use agave nectar as an alternative to their traditional honey gathering practices. Fortunately, in eight years of heavy involvement with the animal rights community, I have never encountered even a single instance of a vegan doing this. Agave nectar is fairly obviously not the only alternative to honey. In fact, honey, being an unnecessary product to almost every single western consumer, does not actually need to be replaced by anything at all. I would also point out that the vast majority of agave nectar goes towards the production of tequila and mezcal. I find it interesting that there is a post calling out vegans to contributing to the agave market almost every week, several of which have been widely shared, yet I have never seen even one post calling out people for consuming tequila. Isn’t that a little bit odd, if the concern really is for the water use of agave, or for the decline of long-nosed bats?
Instead, we seem solely focused on chastising vegans, as if vegans are responsible for the global demand of the product despite making up less than 1% of the global population, and even fewer of those actually consume agave as a honey alternative. It is very much a niche product; I don’t know any vegan who uses it. Maple syrup and golden syrup are far more widely used as honey alternatives, since they’re about a quarter of the price and far more widely available than agave, which is marketed as a health food far more so than it is as a vegan food.
The point is that when we object to the consumption of honey, I think it is fair to say that we are not generally talking about indigenous cultivation of the maya. We are talking to a largely western audience of consumers who choose to purchase honey, a product wholly unnecessary to them, and we certainly don’t generally advocate agave as the sole replacement.
I can totally appreciate the offence taken at any instances of vegans actually attacking indigenous people, which I’m sure happens despite my never having seen it. But that is not at all the argument that most vegans are using when we object to honey - what we object to is the exploitation of animals for profit, in any context.
@ everyone on this hell site that repeats the same fake-woke anti-vegan trash on every one of my posts.
A friend of mine posted this and tagged my old instagram account, asking me to share it. I figured sharing it here where I actually have a following, would be far better.
Please remember that just because the government is giving into pressure and greed, that doesn’t mean that any of this is getting any better, in a lot of ways it’s getting worse. And even if you yourself aren’t being as heavily affected anymore, there are people and communities that are.
Stay safe Darling ones, and help others remain safe too.
