Bright red glowed through her eyelids, and slowly did she flutter them open. She found herself waking under a large maple tree that smelled of apricots, and was surrounded by autumn leaves. As she stretched out her limbs, the crinkle of leaves filled her ears. Slowly she gathered herself upright and noticed that it must only be mid-afternoon due to the position of the sun being directly above her. As she continued to survey her surroundings, she could not help but question herself where she had decided to take an afternoon nap. She was surrounded by nature. Trees with trunks that were as wide as a car and leaves that were of orange and brown slowly starting to fall off the branches just to show everyone the time of the year. To her left was a small playground that clearly had seen better days, and to her right was a small one way street with a small convenience store in the corner. Strangely there were no children playing on the playground, no cars driving on the one-way street, nor does anyone going in or out of the small convenience store.
The young lady gathered her belongings, notebook, and pencil, and decided to venture deeper into the strange city that she unconsciously stumbled upon. She walked out of the playground area and dusted the crinkled leaves off of her pants and bottom. She continued straight through a slim opening of a wired fence that barricaded the playground and then immediately stepped onto paved concrete. The road seemed newly laid due to the faint smell of tar that lingered. One foot in front of the other; she continued to progress towards the convenience store.
The girl could hear birds chirping, and the wind blowing through the trees but still, she could not hear any human noises. As she decreased the distance between herself and the store, she could start to make out the signs being hung through its windows. The obvious open sign was the biggest taking up majority of the window space. Beneath the open sign, you can see smaller posters side by side covering up the remaining space of the window. She can't quite make out what they say but you can definitely see a picture with writings underneath. She moved 10 steps closer and then she stopped. She can see what is on the posters. It's her. She can see her face with the larger “Missing Person” typed right above the photo. “Missing?” She thought. “How can I be missing? I've never been to this town, and I'm right here in front of this store. There has been no harm done to me. What is going on?”
Her confusion plagued her mind and caused her to run straight for the store. The two large double doors separated instantly after recognizing her movement. Flustered, her breathing started to quicken and shorten. Immediately she knew no one was in the store. Running raggedly through the aisles hoping someone might have been crouched low, she grew even more confused. “Hello?” she said aloud. No answer.
“Whats the matter chile?” questioned, what sounded like an older southern woman's voice. The young girls' breathing quickly deepened. She started to turn towards the voice and answer,
“Are you lost?” The older lady questioned. As the girl fully turned toward the voice, a black silhouette was reaching out towards her to comfort her and like a flash, the silhouette disappeared. The girl jumped back in shock and her breathing began shortening once more. Panic started to creep into her body. Her chest started tightening, her head started spinning, she felt as if she were going to vomit.
Then she feels a warm nudge on her arm. Then another nudge but in a rocking motion, and she can softly hear someone saying, “Lexis...Lexis wake up.” Her eyes bolted open and completely startled her sister, Ali. “Jeez, don't wake up so creepy.” Ali told her with a hint of agitation and added, “Mom said dinners ready and that you shouldn't fall asleep with the TV on.” Ali walked out of Lexis's room and Lexis was washed with relief. It was just a dream. She slowly stretched and she heard a crinkle come from under her. She lifted her bottom and pulled out a leaf breaking apart. Her breathing began to shorten again as she quickly ran towards her window, it is winter in Boston, Massachusetts.
