All I'm getting from you is... colours.
Why did the entire fandom tell me Supernatural was The Queerbaiting Show when it’s not bait, it’s just there on the damn screen?
#are you sure you got it from the fandom #and not the outsiders? #anyway i hope you're enjoying the gay hunter and gay angel show (via @ltleflrt)
#it wasn't queerbait #it was just queer (via @a-couple-of-dumbasses)
#'turns out SPN is queer actually' post (via @ironworked)
and @charcubed I liked this recent discussion:
If the confession scene had never made it onto the screen, the show would be just as queer.
Supernatural repeatedly walked right up to the line between implicit and explicit queerness. Just as an example, TMWWBK. It about as clear as it could be about the nature of the relationship between Dean and Cas. The audience is meant to understand the episode as a romantic breakup, and it doesn't need to be said out loud for the meaning to be obvious. It's not a joke, it's not throwing a bone to the fans. It's implicit, it's subtextual, but it's right there. And it's not less queer just because the characters don't kiss on screen or say the words. (And if we're honest, this episode probably couldn't have been more explicit when it aired in 2011 anyway.)
(Word of God [or actors] can't erase it either. Jake Gyllenhaal once said he thought Jack Twist was straight. John Knowles claimed there was no gay subtext in A Separate Peace. They were both wrong.)
#true #Honestly I feel like the Queerbaiting is a new young fans perspective #Like I love that we can have canonically openly queer kiss on screen stuff I think it's awesome #But we got more depth in our relationships before everything had to be on-screen kisses for it to count #Like now the Queer character is some white bread neighbor who's been married and is in a relationship so stable it's not worth noting #It's representation without representation. #Technically so and so is gay so the show isn't 'homophobic' but you also don't know the so and so... because they're only background #and side characters... kind of like what modern U.S. TV did in the 1980s and 1990s with minority actors #(Genuinely the shows on the BEN (Black Entertainment Network) rocked but the mainstream networks... #they were so afraid of making minority people and talking about their culture they just faded to the background.) #It's like the Racist Truck (Route 666 Season 1) episode. There were issues but at least they faced it head on #Turning minorities into unproblematic background characters is not the way. It sucks worse than the implied representation did #Representation without depth is just... virtue signaling. #Like Supernatural is so good... because there had to be a degree of implied. So they could stay on the show (via @curiousoh-spn)
#yes good #supernatural #destiel #the queer show #literally not as a joke (via @commasameleon)
#spn prime #spn is a good show actually (via @ahundredbillionheavens)
Are the tides finally changing? Are people finally done calling it queerbaiting? I have prayed for this day... PLEASE LET IT BE TRUE LOL
Spn is a queer text
#THANK YOU #we were talking about destiel being canon when I was in fandom during season 8! #it is not queerbaiting it’s just queer!!!!! (via @deathbycoldopen)
#agree with all of this and reblogging for the additions #although idk if i agree the 'queerbaiting' is a new fans perspective #people would have regular arguments about how spn was THEE 'queerbait show' #and that was back when i joined the fandom in season 9 #regardless #supernatural is NOT Queerbaiting #it's just queer #disregarding the queer storytelling happening on screen because they never kissed is actually batshit (via @rogue-translator)
bi Dean is not a "headcanon." It exists in a gray area, because some of this depends on how "canonical" people consider queer coding to be, but as queer coding is a purposeful deliberate part of a text, I consider bi Dean to be canon. And it's not wrong for me to say that, I'm leaving room for people who want more open representation though, so aren't sure if they can say it's "canon," not for people who deny that things textually part of the text are part of the text. It's not explicitly openly declared canon but that doesn't mean it's not in the canon.
Ever notice how the one and only receipt people who hate bi Dean have is "but Dean likes women!!!"
Yeah. They really aren't astute.
Anyways, here's my bi Dean tag that collects textual analysis of bi Dean as well as some of my own posts and addressing some of the fallacious arguments that get deployed to attack the reading. Happy reading!
Normalize discussion of bi Dean as canonical, as in, queer coding is part of the text.
lazarus rising is a very green and blue episode
oh and then sam comes in with the ruby ruby red. oh it's such a good episode of television
this post has probably been made a million times but act 1 is green (dean) act 2 is red (sam) act 3 is blue (cas)
like:
and there’s exchange of colors... when dean is on the phone trying to find sam there’s a red drink in the foreground... at pamela’s when cas burns out her eyes dean’s face is lit up partially blue... when ruby is talking about the cosmic nature of souls being raised there’s blue backlight... definitely reading a little bit too much into this but also i think it’s neat
This is so cool
when dean says "last time someone looked at me like that i got laid" he's being vicious
like. he tells sam that he doesn't believe in him, tells bobby that he's not his father. he's hitting on what hurts most on purpose, and for cas it's acknowledging this thing between them out in the open in a really vicious way. like. someone has buried a sword in his back and he pulls it through and slices cas open with it, too. they've had this really intense relationship and cas has literally and figuratively started falling for dean and they keep dancing around it and talking past each other and fundamentally i think they're both okay with that, for now. it's the apocalypse and if they survive - well, who knows. but for now there's sort of outlined rules of engagement which yeah, do include standing very close and a little staring but certainly does not include explicitly talking about it. and so, the very first time they talk about it explicitly, dean is using it as a weapon to hurt cas. and it works, or it at least pisses him off. because it's not just what he says, it's the calculatedly casual way he says it, he's intentionally cheapening this profound thing. it's the way they've been building to something and they both know it and dean just uses it to try and hurt cas enough to push him away.
Sometimes you fall down the Destiel history rabbit hole like it's a political scandel... There's a weird 'what did we know, and when did we know it?' to it...
- Mark Sheppard
Although a relationship hasn't blossomed yet between Castiel and Dean on Supernatural, fans are convinced that the two will end up together.
just read "cas told them about the civil war in heaven and dean and sam didn't care at all" 1. sam was soulless so i think he gets some slack before he was re-ensouled, 2. dean kept asking to help and cas said no
Cas did not start out the show shy about asking Dean for help. He started the show with almost no sense of personal boundaries, flying into bathrooms or calling in the middle of the night and telling Dean, "I need your help". When Cas needed help in season 5, he was always direct about it. When Cas didn't need help and considered involving his human friends to be an inconvenience that would slow him down, he would disappear without a word, popping in and out of the room. So in early season 6, when Cas keeps popping in and out of the room, the signal he is sending to Dean is, "Your presence at this moment would slow me down. When I need you, I'll let you know." The funny thing is, Dean really doesn't like this behavior from Cas. He likes to know what's going on, and his frustration with Cas refusing to communicate is rather present in 6.03 and 6.06 (the first two season 6 episodes Cas appears in).
Getting Cas to even tell them there was a civil war on in 6.03 is like pulling teeth. Cas keeps flying away then flying back in, giving vague, frustratingly clipped answers. Dean is clearly irritated that Cas won't stand still long enough to give him a straight answer. Finally when they get the jist of the situation out of him:
DEAN: Cas, why didn't you tell us this? CASTIEL: I was ashamed. I expected more from my brothers. I'm sorry. Now I need your blood.
Note that at this point, they're already working with Cas and helping him. Cas has already told them "I need your help." Their missions happen to align, but Cas is trying to find the weapon Balathazar stole and Cas wants to track it down and demands Sam and Dean's help, which they give to him (though soulless Sam is pretty pissed about being ignored for over a year). Dean gets this one moment of vulnerability out of Cas where he admits that he's been avoiding them out of shame, then Cas immediately breaks that tension by grabbing Dean by the wrist, yanking his hand over a bowl, and slicing his palm open without asking. Cas does not want to talk about what he is doing or why, because he knows if he stops for an instant (especially for Dean) he's going to start questioning some of the choices he's been making, and he can't afford that. The whole episode he's darting around place to place, pushing them around wherever he needs all of them to be, and makes himself as unapproachable as possible, controlling the means of communication and the entire situatiuon. The moment that Cas solves things with Balathazar (with Sam and Dean's assistance) he disappears before Dean can ask a single other question, then goes radio silent for weeks, until 6.06 when Dean prays about another angelic weapon (a thing Cas needs for his own purposes) then Cas shows up again. He makes it clear he needs the horn. He shares another small moment of vulnerability, while at the same time conveying that he is overwhelmed and busy.
DEAN What happened to you, Cas? You used to be human, or at least like one. CASTIEL I'm at war. Certain... regrettable things are now required of me.
And Dean actually shows that he is thinking about what Cas needs, by turning away from Cas's questionable actions (torturing a child in 6.03) and straight to questions about the horn Cas needs.
DEAN And Gabriel's Horn of Truth? That's a real thing? CASTIEL You've seen it? DEAN We think it's in town. Something's forcing people... Sound of angel wings fluttering. CASTIEL has left. DEAN Oh, well, you're welcome!
Again, instead of truly including Dean in the why or how, Cas flys off without answering questions. He doesn't actually leave space for Dean to become a part of the situation in any other capacity than the limited ways Cas allows, because Dean's presence would be inconvenient.
Dean is also Not Doing Well in 6.06. He spends the entire episode scared and on edge around Sam, drinking to cope with being in the same room with him, being told by Sam and Bobby that he is crazy, an episode after being assaulted by a rapist and being unable forget Sam watching and smiling. We know he's been sending Cas increasingly frantic prayers out of concern that his brother is possessed by Lucifer (which would also be a big deal on the grand apocalyptic Raphael/angel front), and Cas hasn't answered him. Dean's clearly stung when Cas shows up in 6.06 only because Dean mentioned a weapon Cas needed. After everyone minimizing and ignoring his concerns, Cas is just one more person in his life doing the same, and if you willfully ignore what Dean is going through, you can come away with the conclusion that he's being entitled in 6.06, but if you pay even the slightest shred of attention to exactly how close to a full blown emotional breakdown Dean is in 6.06... it's not hard to see why he isn't in a space to do much more than put his own needs and concerns aside and ask Cas what the weapon he needs is, and to be stung when even that attempt to relate is rebuffed by Cas immediately flying off, with an added implication that Dean's weeks of emotional distress do not matter to him. Cas does come back, and observe Dean's clear distress, and promise his aid with Sam, and Cas makes good on that promise in the following episode, and Dean relies that promise in 6.07, but also clearly receives the "I am spread thin and cannot help you with anything" message that Cas is laying down by the end of the episode, and endeavors not to bother Cas.
It's actually soulless Sam who contacts Cas in 6.10, tricking him into showing up by claiming to have—ding-ding-ding! you guessed it!—an angelic weapon Cas can use in his war. And Cas quickly realizes that his friends and his business partner are about to kill each other, and involves himself to prevent either party from coming to harm by staging Crowley's death.
From 6.07 to 6.10, Cas uses Sam and Dean in his war effort. They just don't know that. Crowley coerces Sam and Dean into working for him and Cas, with Cas as the silent partner in the alpha-gathering business that Sam and Dean don't know about by Cas's design. Cas has no need to come to them and ask for help because they're already in fact helping him, doing exactly what he needs them to do. From Dean's perspective, unaware that Cas is involved with Crowley, Dean's avoiding burdening his busy friend with the King of Hell—someone Dean might have asked for help with in a different setting. And Cas can come to him if he needs something. He has no reason to think Cas won't come to him for help, because that's the only reason Cas showed up at all in 6.03 and 6.06—because Sam and Dean had something he needed.
6.10 is the longest stretch of time Dean and Cas spend together since the start of the season, and it culminates in Dean telling Cas he's there for him, and being told he can't do anything to help (which is what's been communicated by Cas's silence and flighty behavior anyway).
CASTIEL: Crowley was right. It’s not going well for me upstairs. DEAN: If there’s anything we can do – CASTIEL: There isn’t. I wish circumstances were different. Much of the time I’d rather be here. DEAN: Look, Cas, we know you got a steaming pile on your plate. There’s no need for apologies. We’re your friends.
In this interaction, they're also both trying to apologize to each other and dispell the tension that was present from 6.06-6.07. Cas pretty much says he wishes he could just spend all his time with Dean (if that wasn't already clear from Cas lingering around their motel watching TV while a war is on). I.e., if Dean was under the impression during 6.06 that Cas did not care about him and that's why he ignored his frantic prayers, Cas wants to reassure him that that isn't the case at all. In turn, Dean tells Cas that he understands that Cas is busy, makes it clear that he is not hurt like he was in 6.06, and makes it clear that he's there if Cas needs him.
It isn't that they don't care about each other. It's that neither is in a mental space to support each other very well emotionally for the first 1/3-1/2 of the season, and Dean actually is helping Cas—he just doesn't always know it, because Cas doesn't want him to know. Cas and Balthazar use Sam and Dean again (as bait for Raphael and Virgil) in "The French Mistake" without their knowledge. All this secrecy serves to protect Cas's reputation among his friends and prevent the inconvenience of his allies (including the angels who also don't know what he's really up to) protesting how he runs things.
Like I think people really re-write season 6 Castiel into someone who was sulking, hands shoved in his pockets, kicking rocks because awww shucks he could really use Dean's help but Dean didn't care, and Cas was doing sooo many things for him. But that's not really what happened. Cas did Dean exactly one requested favor—helping with Sam in 6.07 (then maybe his brief appearance in 6.12?). Other than that, everything Cas did with Dean ultimately served his own interests. Cas did not fail to make Dean useful to him. He just didn't always want Dean to know how he was being helpful or that Cas was involved. That doesn't mean there weren't ways they hurt each others feelings, or that Cas had no reason to ever be stung (I think it's clear he was irritated with Dean in 6.07 for example) but I think the fandom take on the whole season comes off pretty warped because of a failure to re-examine some of these interactions with the knowledge of what Cas is actually up to and how he's intentionally hiding things and is actually using Dean the whole season.
Deancas coldplay kisscam scenario where the internet goes insane because serial killer Dean Winchester just got spotted alive and cosied up to missing person James Novak
Breaking News: Illinois native presumed to be dead discovered at Coldplay concert with FBI's most wanted, Dean Winchester (Also presumed to be dead), more on this at 11-
All this talk about Dean's hell trauma has stirred up thoughts.
For the audience (and everyone in-universe) it was months. But for Dean it was 40 years! And I think that gets lost.
Even if it was 40 normal years (and it absolutely wasn't) thats a hell of a disconnect for him. For Dean the events of seasons 1-3 were 40 years ago. 40 more years since John died, since the Stanford drama and he's had a lot of stuff going on that makes all that less dramatic.
He has 40 years of distance from those events and I think that people miss that. I see it in time travel fic that people accept that a Dean from the future has come to terms with John's death (or whatever incident they are talking about) because he's had the time to deal with it, but I've never seen that principle applied to Dean's time in hell
One of my all time favorites lines in the show is this blink and you'll miss it bit in Lazarus Rising. They're going to Baby for the first time since Dean got back and he says "I almost forgot" as he's walking to the driver side door. He almost forgot Baby. That's what he'll did.
i do think “human” gender is important to cas’s understanding of himself and his identity (in a way that imo sexuality isn’t), because once jimmy gets vaporized in swan song, cas is somewhat uniquely an angel with a body, not just a vessel.
so cas’s body comes to be an important part of his identity and sense of self, especially after he loses his grace, and gender is a part of that (he’s jack’s father, not just his parent). and being an embodied cis man kinda makes you trans when your starting point was multidimensional wavelength of celestial energy.
to be clear this isn’t so much a strongly textually supported meta as it is a reading I personally enjoy. I just have fun collapsing the allegorical back into the literal.
“what does it mean for an angel to have a body (instead of an interchangeable vessel)” and “what does it mean for a human to have a gender” are analogous to me in that both concern your body and the ways you do or don’t identify with it as a component of your “self” vs just what carries your brain around, and how the integration of the body as part of the self changes how you exist and are perceived.
so when I think about cas choosing and strongly identifying with a gender, it’s less about the gender itself (the way it would be for a human) and more about how gender serves as a concrete way to choose and identify with his body.
Supernatural 9x10 Road Trip
Dean always letting his mask slip around his angel
i think for a long time dean genuinely doesn't know if cas even likes him. not likes likes him but enjoys his company, wants to spend time with him, etc. cas cares about him but he's not sure in what way. and based on the information available to dean and his specific combination of issues it's a reasonable question, and an active one at least through cas refusing to kill him in s9.
in dean's mind he's hopelessly and obviously in love with someone who thinks of him as a coworker and has turned him down for post-work happy hour more than once
