Intro

Hey, I’m Nico, they/them. This is where I dump comics + superhero stuff. My main/art blog is @themeaningofweird. My AO3 is here. I have a long, untagged queue. Feel free to copy my image descriptions!

Big Batfam + Teen Titans + YJ fan, but I like to dabble all over. Always reading more comics. I tag me talking with heroesriseandfall. Here’s a random post & guide to my “bonds” tags. Other fun tags include funny business, dc continuity, and dcu geography.

Chronological reading project: in 2011-era with a focus on the Batkids, also reading Kon-El, Bart Allen, Koriand’r, Jackson Hyde, Roy Harper, etc.

I try to tag spoilers (feel free to ask for something to be tagged) but I may sometimes forget. If you actually hate the Batfamily, we might not get along, but this is definitely a place of character & writing critical analysis, including discussing major character flaws. Also: no incest on this blog, including adoptive.

call me terminally academia-brained but i do think a lot of the fun of character analysis is figuring out how to build a compelling argument for a particular reading using lines of evidence from canon as well as meta/intertextual support

and you could say that what i’m saying here is basically “a lot of the fun of doing character analysis is doing character analysis” but let’s be real a lot of fandom character analysis is pretty heavily vibes-based. and i think that’s where i really chafe up against the traditional thought-terminating fandom attitude of like, everyone’s opinions hold equal weight and any interrogation of that is inherently hostile. because i think it’s fascinating to dig into where others are coming from in terms of their views on characters or dynamics or whatever, especially when they differ significantly from more commonly expressed views, and part of that digging is asking people okay what parts of canon are you drawing from to support your opinion? what parts of canon are you disregarding or downplaying? how does this argument hold up in the light of how race, gender, class, ability, etc. operate both in the piece’s in-fiction and real world contexts?

folks please recommend a lesser known / underrated but not completely obscure dc (strictly dc comics) female character of colour or two or ten for me to get into. it's okay if you list someone i already know i'm just trying to get into dc more often and branch out :(

lorena marquez / aquagirl ii (introduced in the second arc of aquaman 2003)

onyx adams (periphery bat/arrow character in the 1980s and again in the 2000s)

tatsu yamashiro / katana (many outsiders runs through the years, starting with the original 1980 run)

jo mullein / green lantern (read far sector!!!!!)

xiomara rojas / crush (also read crush and lobo!!!)

peng delian (from new super-man; justice league of china's wonder woman)

^^ my personal list. natasha irons and grace choi and anissa pierce (and karen beecher! and kimiyo hoshi!!) are also good shouts from other people but i'm less personally familiar with their material. i personally love arani caulder nee desai (from the kupperberg run of doom patrol (1987)) but that is very much a "reclaiming from the terrible source material" sort of pick.

i think there is a difference between a knowingly flawed character and a thematically uncomfortable character and knowing the difference is half the battle

knowingly flawed character: this character has traits that the author deliberately put in to show they have nuance and aren't perfect as a person. this will put them at odds with some readers and endear them to others, depending on them as people, and that's good!
