fuck health issues fr. i should have a little screen that tells me exactly whats wrong and whag to do about it
opening Diagnostics for the fifth time today: Okay what is it NOW we HAVE enough RAM I took the dexedrine I took the other meds the HR is regulated what is it NOW
I regularly refer to the stuff I do when I'm trying to figure out why my body is Doing The Thing as "debugging." When a doctor asks, "did you try--" I can be like, "Yeah, I did my whole debugging thing for this condition, I tried X and then Y and then Q and 3 and Z and 82. None of them worked, that's why I called you."
I want a medical tricorder as seen in Star Trek. Is that too much to ask?
I want a tricorder and the damned diagnostic computer that goes with.
Having access to the Enterprise and its magic sickbay would be great!
Never let America host anything again
Not related to the World Cup: Per a KC resident, esleweb:
"The headline is wrong, but the rest of the piece seems to match what local reports are saying. This was not ânearâ the England training ground, nor their hotel. From what Iâve been seeing, it was likely a dispute at a large blockparty that got out of hand, and folks started shooting. Sad, and more sadly could be said about other shootings in KC as well."
Coyotes trying their damndest to get domesticated
Thoughts, in approximate order:
You know, given how C. lupus, C. lupus familiaris, and C. latrans can all create perfectly viable hybrids, and that the proto-dogs that domestic dogs descended from much more resembled coyotes than wolves, it's not really a surprise that some yotes are experimenting with domestication.
Goddamn that lady must be fucking shredded to be able to chase down a coyote through a swamp.
"Don't let wild animals into your house, you are not going to make Dogs 2.0, you're going to get injured and the animal killed." is probably obvious enough advice that I don't need to put it in the tags as a reminder.
...I know more than four people on this site that have poisoned themselves trying out 'foraging guides' they found online, two people IRL who tried to keep raccoons at pets, and have a family member who got hospitalized for Cat Scratch Fever after grabbing a feral cat bare-handed. This is apparently, not obvious enough.
Do Not Attempt To Domesticate Coyotes
I mean, I'm looking at them, and they're obviously coyotes.
Maybe these are people who have never seen one before. (They register as "dog but not quite right".)
Swarovski can continue to fuck off.
In 2021, Swarovski (the company that makes the very sparkly crystals you see in certain jewelry, on figure-skaters' twinkliest outfits, on red carpet dresses), decided they didn't want the grubby fingers of small-time jewelers, clothing designers and costumers and crafters on their shiny beads and rhinestones anymore. They decided to limit their sales to "luxury" and couture creators, not girls who sell stuff on Etsy. The tenor of their press release on the subject was snide and insulting. Resellers (like your favorite bead shop) would no longer be allowed to carry their product; the average Jane on the street would not be able to purchase them. You could only get them if you had an authorized business agreement that bound you to very strict brand behavior. And those of us who still had good stock of the crystals would no longer be "permitted" to use the brand's name in our listings for sale.
Every bead shop and craft supply place and many, many small clothing makers--wedding shops, prom and dancing dress suppliers, the sort of salt of the Earth mom and pop time machines of shops that are the backbone of the field--scrambled to find something that could replace them. The last of the stock dwindled quickly, all of us grabbing what we could get while there was any chance of it, and then it was gone and we no longer had any access.
I was Big Pissed about it at the time. It was just so goddamn stuck-up, when wholesalers and indie jewelers had made them so much money, when some people I knew--when *I!*--had been brand-loyal for decades. But with no recourse, everyone pivoted fairly quickly, most of us to Preciosa Crystals. Those are Czech, quite sparkly, and considerably less expensive than Swarovski. The faceting method they use is different, but not worse; any differences are hardly noticeable when you're seeing them as a hundred pinpoints of light.
Well, out of nowhere, Swarovski just dropped this: https://www.harmanbeads.com/swarovski-brand-policy-update
"Effective June 1, 2026, Swarovski updated the distribution and brand usage policies introduced in 2021. Businesses may now purchase Swarovski Crystals without signing a Brand Control Agreement, and Authorized Distribution Partners may once again sell Swarovski Crystals to resellers, including bead stores and online retailers. Businesses may also use the Swarovski brand name when following Swarovskiâs Proper Use Guidelines. Designers, manufacturers, artists, brands, retailers, and resellers are now eligible to purchase Swarovski Crystals through authorized distribution channels."
They want us back. A lot of the companies who could have kept a brand relationship with them also have swapped to Preciosa, over the last half-decade, in solidarity with indie creators and out of a sour awareness that it could be them, next. And it doesn't hurt that Preciosa was able to expand their line quite a bit now that everyone who wanted sparkle had no choice but to go to them.
And I'm not seeing nearly anyone who intends to return. The feeling is, "Y'all told us to fuck off! Off we fucked! And now, that's what you can do, too!" I'm seeing a lot of "How many of us did you stab in the back?" comments from the people whose money they're hoping to attract.
And personally I'm sitting over here all rubby hands, mean snickering, because they really thought they were going to be able to outclimb the people who actually provided all their profits, and now here they are, hat in hand.
It's been a while since I said "this person wins the internet", but today it is merited.

text: How may months are in a week?
Some weeks feel at least a month long.
Two basic rules about resumes: never ever ever send a resume through as a Word document -- only ever send a PDF. And 2: never ever ever use Times New Roman as the font.
So tell me why ive had four separate doctors apply for a role I'm organising interviews for using WORD DOCS WITH TIMES NEW ROMAN. AND PHOTOS!!!?!?! ALL ADVICE SAYS NOT TO INCLUDE A PHOTO OF YOURSELF OR TO GO OVER MULTIPLE PAGES BUT THESE PEOPLE ARE SENDING FIVE PAGE WORD DOC TIMES NEW ROMAN RESUMES WITH PHOTOS IN THE TOP CORNER, WHY. AMD VISIBLE FORMATTING TABLES SOMETIMES TO BOOT!!!
TIMES NEW FUCKING ROMAN. WORD DOCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you guys serioussssssss
I get to always always send basically all finished documents as PDFs, and that resumes don't need pictures for the vast magority of jobs, but what do you have against a font? It's not like comic sans or something. I thought times new Roman was like a common essay font. Tbh idk what font I'm using bc I fw my latex template as little as possible. It looks normal-ish tho
I'm the middle of a bunch of Tasks And Duties rn but I dont want to forget to reply, so apologies for the screengrab instead of a proper text reply, but in short:
Is this font serifs?
That one is a sans-serif ----- "sans" as in "without," and "serif" as in "decorative flicks on letters."
Serif fonts are ones like Times New Roman, Garamond, Centaur, Georgia, etc. Here's an example of one with some of the flicky little "feet" circled:
They can be really pretty fonts -- but they can also look quite cluttered, if there's a lot of text. They're also harder to read than more plain (sans-serif) fonts, especially for people with things like dyslexia or impaired vision or etc.
I personally find serif fonts to be a good option for titles, but not for anything more substantial than that -- especially big walls of text like essays or resumes.
A sans-serif font is something like Arial, Calibri, Helvetica, etc. Here's the same example as above but with the LACK of flicky feet circled:
Because its more plain than the other, san-serif fonts are LOT easier to read, especially when theres a lot of text. And its more accessible for those who struggle with reading, because theres less clutter. This one is a better choice for everything from advert paragraphs to essays/books/resumes/etc.
I would agree, but Times New Roman hasn't been a default font in nearly 20 years
Yeah but its still very much a held-over mentality. If someone was using computers at the time that TNR was the default font, they very much view it as a crappy font still today -- and who is most likely to be looking over resumes? Someone who has been using computers since TNR was the default font and using it was an immediate sign of "this person is barely literate" or someone younger than that? Odds are good its an older person with baked in prejudice against times new roman.
I worked for a brief stint in a recruitment office (awful job; do NOT do it) and they literally put resumes in the Dont Bother Reading pile if they used TNR. I also have several friends who are resume filterers at their jobs, and every single one of them WILL harshly judge a resume thats sent in in TNR.
And its not like youre not allowed to use any serif fonts at all. Just... maybe pick one thats not as divisive and likely to get your resume skipped as times new roman.
If youâre judging someoneâs fit for the job by whether they changed the default font or not ⌠Jesus. What a dumb fucking reason to overlook a potentially good employee.
I mean. Yeah. But also it IS something that i have seen numerous recruiters do, so imo it makes sense to actively choose a widely inoffensive font so youre not knocked out early by a person looking for quick ways to slim down on the number of resumes they have to go through
The only rule of CV writing is that there are no universal rules. What one recruiter tips straight in the bin is another's top shelf preference.
OP which industry are you working in?
My city ++ industry usually has Baby Boomers doing the hiring. They like Word Docs, they like Times New Roman, they like pictures in resumes even though asking for one is illegal here. With good reason.
If you're applying to a PHD program here, you need all of these things.
That is fascinating to me. Every single hirer Ive ever known who's talked about resumes has said they hate the first two things. Especially word docs because the odds of the formatting getting fucked up in transit is high, and theyre super annoyed when they open a CV to find its jumbled all over the shop because Word hates you personally. Literally the other day a friend was telling me that her boss wont even consider someone who sends through a word doc.
They DO seem to universally love it when photos are on resumes -- but thats because if you have a photo on your resume then its an additional point they can judge on. Are you pretty/not pretty? Young/old? Male/female? Look "local" or foreign? All of those are free judgement points!! DO NOT PUT PHOTOS ON YOUR RESUMES!! Me including photos in the OG post was less because recruiters hate that (too many of them love it) but because it runs the risk of putting you at a distinct disadvantage. You have NO idea what prejudices someone will or wont have, and sending though a photo of yourself runs a high risk of triggering one or multiple subconscious (or concious) biases, which may -- or may not!! -- be in your favour.
As to industries, I've been in a few -- health and education mainly, but a stint in recruitment too. That was AWFUL and I hated it. They literally split the incoming resumes for a job into two piles: "can I pronounce this name" and "nope". I had wondered, for a hot minute in that job, why I would get two copies of the same resume come through with two different names on it -- a visibly Asian name on one, but a European name on the other. And its because the one with a European name had a higher chance of making it through the selection process. It was so fucked.
The friend I mentioned earlier is in corporate ---- but we're also in australia. I wonder how much impact country has on this whole thing.
Slso though, since making this post ive been informed that vacancies that use an AI to sift theough resumes will do better with a word doc than a PDF, which: fucking UGH. So now we have to PDF the ones that are going to a human, to preserve formatting and not offend anyone who hates word docs, BUTTTT, we have to send word docs if there's an AI doing the first sweep. And you probably cant tell from the outside which it will be. đ I đ hate đ it đ here đ
Sounds like things are getting self-obstructive to the point of hilarity. đ I get the feeling that pretty soon *NO ONE* will be able to get a job because both ultra-biased humans and AIs will start rejecting *EVERY* rĂŠsumĂŠÂ that comes in no matter *how* qualified an applicant might be. đđ
I went through the process at least once, with the company where I worked. They don't take resumes any more, they have an online form that you fill in for the particular job you're after. No photos, either.
(Their employees don't skew white male.)
Itâs here !! The guide for two-legged people who donât know how to draw wheelchairs !!! 7 pages of infodump ! Disclaimer : I donât know everything, I have one (1) experience of wheelchair user who used both bad and good chairs, and I share what I learned.
Image description :
1) Calvin in his wheelchair saying âyoâ under a huge title âhow to draw manual wheelchairs properly by Calvin Arium, a wheelchair user comic artistâ.
2) A character says âmy character self propels in a chair that was outdated in 1970 lolâ Calvin says âso it looks like you two legged people donât know the difference between an hospital chair and a chair made to be independantâ an arrow point the crapppy chair, saying âwe never want to see this againâ
a bubble says âthe hospital chair is extremely unpractical, tough considering itâs cheaper than a good custom chair a lot of us have only thisâ
3) a character hurt himself trying to reach the wheels of the hospital chair. Several arrows point why the chair is unpractical : âhigh backrest restrain shoulders movementâ âhuge armrest restrains wheel accessâ âseparated footrest : amovible, cheap, bulkyâ âx structure, foldable but heavyâ âhuge front casters for stabilityâ âheavy wheelsâ
4) Several arrows point an active wheelchair (the KSL by KĂźshall) : âusually no armrestâ âa low backrest allow more movementâ âlight, design, ferning expersiveâ âspecial cushion to avoind injuriesâ âknee angle is usually 90°â âone single piece of frame, sometimes entirely weldedâ âweight : from 4 to 10kgâ âoften rigidâ âcenter of the wheel is the center of gravityâ âhigher quality wheels : less spikesâ
5) A hand grab different parts of the wheel, pushing harder in the second half. Bubbles says âsome have gloves, some donât. The hand must grab the biggest area possible. Less movement = more energy. This is a common but not only way to push.Calvin is on his back wheels, rolling on grass and dirt bubble says âpopping a wheelie is when a wheelchair user rolls on their back wheels to roll on every complicated surface.
6) several drawings illustrate the folding frame, the ergonomic but rigid and expensive backrest, the separated footrest (only for folding frame), the handles, the folding handles, athe amovibles handles, or no handles, the cool fancy loopwheels, the pretty custom colorsÂ
7) More Features ! The fancy rigid-foldable frame, the anti tippers (sometimes used by beginners), the motorization (wheels, smart drive) when propelling yourself is difficult Calvin says âand now vroom vroom motherfuckersâ

Thanks !
EDIT : Here is a youtube playlist about choosing, cleaning and using active manual wheelchairs in the public space, I learned a lot from those videos when I was a wheelie newbie. (Not sure theyâre all captionned tho) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3j9XB2x5HYmZqgLakRCNt_fjsVZjDAkJ

Those records belong to US, even if they're in hospital files.
He can damned well ask for permission from everyone who's in them and still living, because the records WILL NOT prove his crackpot theories.
