As someone who has been charged by so many moose that I have genuinely lost count (I cannot stress enough that I am very safe around them and take proper precautions, but I walk in nature a bunch and I’m just a moose magnet I guess), here is my ranking of seasons and genders of moose from the worst to get charged by to the best (personal opinions)
8.) Cow moose in spring: 0/10 it’s just the worst. She’s either pregnant or has just calved, which means those hormones and a mother’s rage are pointed all at you. They WILL chase you for a mile or more and dgaf and they are fast. 95% of the time you don’t even see the baby, but according to her you are too close. All of my worst moose encounters have been cow moose in spring. Would not recommend. They’re mean >:(
7.) Bull moose in fall. 1/10 The rut, so they just wanna look cool and are super territorial/aggressive. Testosterone and all that. Jerks. Generally they’re pointed at other bulls but you’re fair game too. If they do want to hurt you, have fun running fast. They would kill you to impress a girl. Jerks.
6.) Cow moose in summer. 1/10 Just a cow moose in spring but slightly more chill. Their babies have gotten better at walking so they know if they chase you too far their calves will wander so they’re less motivated but still terrifying. Still extremely aggressive and mean, not a great experience.
5.) Cow moose in winter. 3/10ish Honestly 4 and 5 are about equal, I put this one higher specifically if they have kids and because she’s already hungry and upset about it. Also as a good rule, winter is scary because snow blocks your escape path. Not the best, not the worst, but not good.
4.) Bull moose in summer. 3/10 Again, pretty tied with last. Average moose. Wouldn’t mind this, not fun obviously but I’m not panicking too hard, lots of tree cover to hide behind and it’s not too bad despite being, y’know, a moose charging you.
3.) Bull moose in spring. 5/10. Still recovering from winter, loosing their antlers, all that. Also not interested in seeming scary because it’s far from rut. Pretty chill dudes so any charging is because you’re in their personal space and I respect that.
2.) Cow moose in fall. 6/10. They are typically too distracted with mating to be too mean. Might chase you a little bit but unless you look paticularly like a male moose you’ll be fine.
1.) Bull moose in winter. HA. WIMPS. I’ve CHARGED one of them and he backed away (theres context I promise, I’m very respectful of wildlife). They’re beat up from a season of fighting and hungry so not in the mood to be territorial. Granted, with snow it can block your escape path which is not fun but they really don’t want to deal with you unless you’re within 10 feet of them in my experience. Obviously stressed out moose act different but these guys are easy to get away from generally 8/10
Now just for clarification, it is never “fun” to be charged and you should not seek out moose encounters. They are both beautiful and dangerous animals that deserve respect and plenty of space. I just happen to be extremely unlucky while I walk in nature, and I have gotten better through the years at spotting them. Respect wild animals and hopefully none of you ever need this. I just wanted to be funny goofy and rank them for reasons :)
Where do you live? I've never even seen a live moose (only on TV / video / photographs). Then again, you've probably never seen a horny toad or a Gila monster, so, if not, we'll call it even.

I used to dream about living in Alaska when I was a kid growing up in Arizona. I've been outside, playing in the yard in 122+. This is my very favorite Youtube clip to describe southern / middle Arizona. I took walks. In that. Stayed hydrated. Literally almost stepped on rattlesnakes a couple of times. I'm living in Pennsylvania now and have for the last couple of decades. Stereotypes out here are cheesesteaks, wild Eagles fans and the Amish. Desire for roughing it in Alaska diminished a bit after having to actually live with snow and ice after a few winters. It turns out, I'm actually phobic of ice (in terms of walking or driving anywhere on it or near it) because growing up in opposite "the sun is trying to kill us" land meant I never learned from a young age how to navigate it. I do not live in moose country, but I nevertheless respect them deeply. I once talked with someone who was raised in tiger country but lived in moose country; she said that between the two, she would rather deal with a tiger.
I live in big bear country, but brown bears are much less of an issue than moose. They generally do not suffer fits of general cussedness. Their main motivation is calories, so if you don't leave calories (uncleaned barbecue grill, unsecured trash, a bird feeder, loose dog food, six forgotten French fries in your car, a granola bar in your pocket, etc.) lying around your property, they'll leave you alone. Unfortunately, this summer is a tough one. Last winter was so cold that many of the berry bushes bears depend on died, and four years ago we had a drought that killed many of the salmon eggs that would have become adults in this year's salmon run. So the bears are a bit tense. One of them tried to get into a tourist's camper shell the other day, luckily while she was in the front. But this too shall pass.
IDK, people scaremonger a lot about Aussie wildlife, but we simply do not have bears or moose etc. Crocs are our most dangerous predator, and they're confined to the top end.
It's all in what you're used to. "I can't go down to the water because I might get et" is not a concern of mine. Bears and meese don't hide underwater waiting for prey. But I consider the elaborate precautions I have to take about leaving potential food sources within reach, etc., just part of daily life.

Look, I realize that the whole Schrodinger's Mitch thing has real political consequences on a national level, but since I'm not from Kentucky and have no say whatsoever in the outcome of the situation, I'm honestly just finding the entire thing grimly hilarious. Has Horrible Turtle Man died? We don't fucking know! Turns out senators can just not show up to work indefinitely and there are no consequences! What fun!

Watching my toddler figure out how to language is fascinating. Yesterday we were stumped when he kept insisting there was a “Lego winner” behind his bookshelf - it turned out to be a little Lego trophy cup. Not knowing the word for “trophy”, he’d extrapolated a word for “thing you can win”. And then, just now, he held up his empty milk container and said, “Mummy? It’s not rubbish. It’s allowed to be a bottle.” - meaning, effectively, “I want this. Don’t throw it away.” But to an adult ear, there’s something quite lovely about “it’s allowed to be a bottle,” as if we’re acknowledging that the object is entitled to keep its title even in the absence of the original function.

My son was about three when he came to me in the middle of the day and said, “Mommy, there’s a knight behind the bush.” I thought he meant a toy knight or something. So I follow him outside and he goes, “Listen. Do you hear it? It’s night behind the bush.” It was a cricket. A cricket was standing in the little patch of shade under the bush, chirping. So, my son saw this dark area with accompanying nighttime sounds and decided, okay, well, that is a night right there. Their brains are incredible.
My little bean knows she’s two, constantly saying proudly ‘I’m two!’ And the other day she saw this very frail old lady who looked one foot in the grave, pulled a face and said ‘oh shiiiit. She’s three.’ I almost screamed.
I live in Korea and have a lot of international friends, and the same is true with language barriers in adults.
