"You're a new face. Have you been here long?"
—{❦};; “No. Why do you ask? Are you a tour guide?”
—{❦};; ”You give me some sort of vague warning, then you tell me there’s nothing to worry about. If you’ve said that, there’s obviously something wrong here that’s a hazard.” Ryusei has no ammo, knowing almost nothing of Raikou. Goodness knows his tongue could probe and pierce through others, if he had some intel.
A sigh, a flick of luscious pink locks, and a flat stare. "Fine... If you really must know, I'll tell you." Raikou inched closer, his gaze going from discontented to dangerous. Sharp eyes, killer's eyes. This man... He was dangerous, wasn't he?
He crept close enough to make others wonder of his intent. Only when he was within whisperdistance did he finally speak.
"The clothing available at the boutique off of Fifth and Tachikawa are overpriced and are of questionable quality. Do not shop there." And that was all he said before turning and walking away at a swift stride.
Raven hair slipped from it’s place behind his ears to hang limply over his face. A result of a light gust of wind but it served it’s purpose. Yoite didn’t want Raikou looking at him just then, didn’t want him to see the expression on his face. How pathetic did he seem right then, lost in his own thoughts? Like a useless child, just like he’d expected himself to be. And for the samurai to say all of those things - he really didn’t understand.
Not that it mattered. None of it had. His wish had gone unfulfilled of his own volition. In the end he’d put the choice to Miharu. When at deaths door he accepted that he was loved, that he did and could love. In the end, all he wanted was to keep Miharu from being hurt. To hell with his father, his stepmother, his past. It wasn’t for them anymore, for anyone else. It was all for that one person that he loved. No wonder he’d been given life again. A life where he had a chance to be happy. Oh, he still suffered even now, yes. But the suffering was so much sweeter when met with the reward.
Everything was too loud, too bright. His senses were too acute for his brain, the organ having gotten used to working with next to nothing. But that was all fine. He didn’t care. He’d suffered worse. As long as he had Miharu.
Yes, Miharu. So then why not others? He had Yukimi. He’d always had him, ever since the day he was all but dropped in his lap like a lost kitten being taken out of the rain. So then why not Raikou, Gau? They cared. Like Hanabusa did. Maybe he could let them in, too…
Slowly that hanging head raised, those confused, curious eyes turned towards the pink haired samurai. Yoite’s face was blank, but if one looked closely there was the barest hint of happiness. Faint, but still there. He nodded once. “If you can put up with me..” he started, paused. His throat was dry. He swallowed. The grease from the treat was still in his throat. A drink was needed. Later, he told himself. Wait until later. “…I’d like more of Gau’s cake..”
Their impasse had become a breakthrough. Today was a day for small miracles, wasn't it? Perhaps things were looking up after all.
"I'll bring some to Yukimi's house next time he makes some." And that was all he would say to that. With a slight wave he continued on his way; school would be out soon and he had yet to break the hopefully good news to Gau, whom undoubtedly had been cheering him on mentally throughout the day. "Say hello to Miharu for me, won't you?" He called over his shoulder, still wearing that contented grin.
"You're a new face. Have you been here long?"
—{❦};; “No. Why do you ask? Are you a tour guide?”
—{❦};; “If it has to do with the supernatural, you better tell me about it. I don’t turn a blind eye to anything non-human.” He does not turn a blind eye, but they narrowed, teeth clenched behind his lips. “…human affairs have nothing to do with me, unless they pose a great danger to me. So which one is it?”
"Nothing supernatural, no... Unless there's a haunted inn or something." He joked, but his gaze remained dark. "No need to worry about it." And that's all he would say about that. No mention of ninjas or kira users or all powerful kings. Nope, not saying a word.
"You're a new face. Have you been here long?"
—{❦};; “No. Why do you ask? Are you a tour guide?”
—{❦};; “’Take care’? What kind of statement is that? Are there Hunters?” Ryusei failed in keeping his voice from not shaking. “You better tell me what’s going on here. Because people normally don’t say things like this when I step out of my hometown.”
"Oh, nothing to worry about as long as you keep yourself out of trouble." Something told Raikou this man was no ordinary citizen; something in his eyes, in the way he moved... Or perhaps it was the bit of canine that flashed when he spoke.
More notes for the file.
"But why do I have to be? Why would you want me?" Valid questions. No one had ever wanted him. Not until he’d been forced upon them because of circumstance. Not even Miharu could claim that he wanted him solely because of mutual pursuit. He had been kidnapped, threatened. They hadn’t met just because. Yoite had been selfish, greedy and stupid. He still couldn’t imagine why he deserved to be rewarded for that. Not with something as precious as the love the young king gave him endlessly and without condition.
Even less so with the man whom stood before him now. Yoite couldn’t make himself believe his words, his heartfelt lecture of needing to stick together and all for one, one for all attitude. What kind of an idiot thinks that way?
Yukimi did… Yukimi, Raikou, Gau, Hanabusa
Miharu…
His eyes lowered in self inflicted defeat. By becoming engrossed in his own upset he’d answered his own question. Some people didn’t care because they were forced to or needed to. They just…cared. As cliched and idiotic as it sounded, it was truth. Raikou was proof of that. “…I still don’t understand why you think I’m worth caring about… If it weren’t because you were needed then Gau would still be in that coma..”
At first, Raikou bristled. How dare he say that? How dare he even bring that up? He nearly lost the person that meant most to him, and he brushes his revival off as only a ploy?
But then, he could only stare at him in disbelief as the rest of his words and actions came together, subsiding the rage he felt. Was Yoite so far gone in self-loathing that he thought himself completely unable to have friends? To have anyone to care about him? It was... Tragic, this boy, whom had only recently known the warmth and touch of another living, breathing human. Whom could only recently say he had truly felt some semblance of happiness. Whether it be for fear of hurting others or hurting himself, Yoite continued to avoid those who showed compassion for him.
And then, the thing with Gau. Yes, it hurt for him to say it, but it wasn't like he didn't know; they needed his skills, and he refused to budge an inch if it would take him further away from his partner. That was why Yoite used his ability to revive Gau; it wasn't out of the goodness of his heart, it was for their own motives.
But that didn't matter. It didn't matter because Gau was alive, Gau was with him, and Gau forgave him for all his faults. And Gau forgave Yoite for his.
"I don't care if it was for your own gain or mine, you still saved Gau when I couldn't." He stated bluntly, "I owe you for that, but that's not why I wish to be friends."
Raikou got to his feet, shouldering his bag and dusting off his slacks, "Together, we brought a sense of peace to Nabari. You gave Gau and I a chance to experience that peace. I'm grateful for that, just as Miharu is grateful that he was able to nullify your wish."
"But that’ doesn’t make any sense," the ravenette complained, finally turning back to the samurai. Upset as he looked, his eyes were just as lost as before. A hopeless child. How old was Yoite again? Sixteen? Just a baby. "I’m different than you. I’m not normal." Abnormal, abhorrent, disgusting. No one needed to be nice to him.
"Are any of us normal? We are from the world of Nabari, we can't claim to be normal." Even Gau, who was dragged into that world due to circumstance and Raikou's own selfishness was in too deep to just fade into the background. Now, with Raikou trying to recover some sense of normalcy, stepping away from that world was a farcical ideal; you could never truly escape that world. There are still enemies, still those who wish harm on you, want their fill of blood, want their revenge.
Neither of them could escape.
But they could cope, and they needed to reach out to do so.
"You are one of us. That's all that matters."
"You're a new face. Have you been here long?"
—{❦};; “No. Why do you ask? Are you a tour guide?”
—{❦};; “Ryusei.” Custom forbids him from giving out his full name to a stranger, or someone he doesn’t trust. “No, it is not a moniker; that is my real name. Blame my parents. I think they were on something when they gave me it.” Pretending that his father was in the picture. Yep. The angst is strong in this one.
"Ryusei-kun, then." He smirked, taking a mental note of his height, approximate weight, mannerisms, and various other differentiating features for Gau's notes. You just never know with some people. "Please take care around here."
"You're a new face. Have you been here long?"
—{❦};; “No. Why do you ask? Are you a tour guide?”
—{❦};; He sunk his teeth into nearly-dead people and otherlings before they died by his own hand. Lots of dead eyes. “Really? A lot of people say I should stop drinking milk.” He’s nineteen. Ryusei’s not growing any time soon. “How much of that milk thing is true, anyways? I thought it had to do with genetics.”
"As far as I know, milk only aids skin and bone health... Not much else." He chuckled; he didn't need anything in the height department, but perhaps Yoite could use a hand with skin health.
"I'm Shimizu Raikou. And you are?"

"Hm, more strange folk to keep track of... I'll have to let Gau know."
Friends? Why? For what purpose? Raikou had no reason to even associate with him! Food was one thing, an exchange of pleasantries and a few words was another, but friendship? That was totally different, unnecessary. Yoite turned from Raikou to toss the box in the nearby trashcan along with the now empty stick. He did not turn back towards him. His eyes continued to shift elsewhere, anywhere but the pink haired samurai. “…I don’t understand.” His voice was cold, but there was strain behind it, like he’d been asked the meaning of life or some other fantastic question to which there was no easy answer. This suggestion had confused him beyond all get out. “Why would you want to talk to me at all?”
"It's not that difficult, is it?" Raikou sighed, running slender fingers through pink strands, "Our group went through a lot together. Miharu considers Gau and I friends, doesn't he?" And Yukimi, he would hope, but that man had a tendency to avoid everyone and anyone when he needed to work... Or had a deadline swiftly approaching his rear. "So likewise, I want to become your friend, too." Perhaps not as close as Miharu and Yoite were, but at least someone to talk to. Yoite needed more contact from humans that didn't shun him.
"You're a new face. Have you been here long?"
—{❦};; “No. Why do you ask? Are you a tour guide?”
—{❦};; And have unnatural hair colors. “Dead fish look unsettling to some people. Why do you think some dislike eating seafood? Have you ever seen the eyes of a dead fish?” Ryusei’s immune to dead fish eyes—unless they were sardines, of course; he’s just playing on what some people might find unsettling. “Because my natural black makes me look washed out. Like a corpse.” Ha. Ha ha ha.
"Of course I've seen dead things' eyes. Haven't we all?" Fish, roadkill, people who stuck their noses too far into the others' business, ninja who broke the cardinal rules of Nabari... Just your average assassin, really.
"Well, I suppose I can't be one to talk. I went from gaijin blond to pink. Gau still gives me grief."
"You're a new face. Have you been here long?"
—{❦};; “No. Why do you ask? Are you a tour guide?”
—{❦};; Ryusei’s not going to lie when he thought this guy seemed weird. He kept a brave face on, though. “I once had a dream where I was stuck in a can of sardines, and a giant started peeling my skin like an orange after eating all of them. Now I can’t see a can or even the fish itself without cringing.”
So the pot called the kettle black... Seems they were both a bit unusual.
"That's an unusual phobia." But it wasn't the strangest thing he had heard, considering all he had been through over the years. He had put away his sword, but he still kept the same tendencies. "And... Why blue, of all colors?"
The idea caught the younger one off guard. Why would Raikou invite him of al people into his home? He was right, after all. They weren’t friends. His only obligation to the ninja was through Gau. There was no other reason to be nice to him. So why bother? The idea eluded him, as was plain on his face. “…Why?” he asked cautiously, curiosity having gotten the better of him. There had to be some underlining reason. People didn’t just invite death into their homes!
His reaction came as no surprise; Yoite was distrusting and Raikou was once his enemy. And yet, they sat there and talked cordially, sharing a treat together. Raikou could only grin as he answered, "Because we're both trying to leave painful things behind."
His smile turned somber as he recalled all the turmoil he put Gau through, his own heart through, for the sake of a madman, then the sake of themselves. "I want to at least say we can be friends after all we went through."
”..I see.” The younger one muttered before turning back to his food almost boredly. He didn’t seem to be all that interested anymore. Strange to see Yoite, whom was always so starved and had such a large appetite uninterested in food. Regardless, he ate it, taking whole dumplings into his mouth, chewing them slowly, monotonously. What was he thinking about?
He must be bored, thought Raikou, It's not like we're friends, exactly, but... Somehow, Raikou felt Yoite understood his motives; his need to change and move on from the events that made their lives a literal hell. Yoite just had a much different way of doing so, it would seem. "If I get the job, I'd like you to come over and celebrate with Gau and I." Suggested he with a warm smile, "Bring Miharu and Yukimi, too."
"You're a new face. Have you been here long?"
—{❦};; “No. Why do you ask? Are you a tour guide?”
—{❦};; “…really? Because I hate sardines, my blood type is AB-, birthday is on the 21st of March, my favorite color is dark red, my hair isn’t really blue, two plus two equals chair, and I hope you’re not an informant.”
Oh, if only he knew. "No, I just like to keep track of people." And then from that almost creepy look came an inquisitional expression. "But why do you hate sardines?"
